Dinosaur Jr. - New Album

I hope the bass makes an appearance in the mix this time.

Sanctuary records is the perfect way to describe them. Dinosaur Jr. was my favorite band though middle school (which I suppose is odd in hindsight), so having them back and making honestly great new albums is such a source of comfort. It's vindicating to know that middle school Evan wasn't wrong; these guys were and are awesome

why is that odd? they were my favorite in middle and high school too.

Eh, I guess it's not odd in and of itself so much as it's odd to think of a time when Dinosaur Jr. could have been a middle schooler's favorite band. And sometimes I forget that they were my favorite. It's easy to simply those memories and make Nirvana or The Clash or some other important band my favorite. But no, it was always Dino Jr.

I downloaded my copy from e music and never got round to asking them why they had managed to upload it without bass. Is it reallymeant to sound that bad? Christ

I don't think it sounds that awful, but I really focus on J's guitar so much that I don't really find myself missing the bass all that much.

Still haven't heard any recent Dinosaur Jr, but on their first few albums and live those rickenbacker bass chords were half the beauty.

fwiw i always thought the bass came through fine on the last couple, or never noticed its absence. it's obv way more prominent on the lou songs, too.

but I really focus on J's guitar so much that I don't really find myself missing the bass all that much.

I'd have to listen to Beyond again, but it's inaudible on Farm, AFAIC

the bass is plenty prominent on Beyond iirc but on Farm it felt like the guitar was way too high in the mix to the detriment of everything else, not just bass -- drums and vox too

Really, set aside a couple hours and hear those records. You will probably be surprised at how much they feel like the band just picked up where they left off a couple decades ago.

Never seen 'em live, so the three-day residency 5 mins from my house is quite a treat.

yeah it is obviously gonna sound like presentism/contrarianism, but i'm w/this - i'm way more likely to put one of the last two on. the weird angles some of them have - i got lost, said the people, &c - sorta match up with the weird, unique-to-dinosaur jams from the first run of records (gettin' rough, severed lips or w/e).

That sounds suspiciously like the two post-Green Mind albums that I didn't really like so much. Hoping Mascis has perfected the formula since then.

slow jams on the last couple have been real nice, i think. & inventive. like with cellos and stuff.

i like this jam. a lot. like the production, too.

if the rest of the record holds up, they'll be 3 for 3.

I keep wanting things to be a little sloppier, but really liking this album a lot. Lou's "Rude" is nice.

man this album sounds really great, could easily see this becoming my favorite of the reunion albums

right now, this is #2 on my reunion list. (after Beyond)

whole record sounds so great. love the purple swirl vinyl, too.

lou's songs are particular standouts.

this is by far my least fave of the reunion lps. Farm is the best.

Not quite "by far", but yeah I'd rank 'em as Farm > Beyond > this one. Love 'em all, just to varying degrees.

How do these albums compare to the Green Mind/Where you Been years

i like them better but then i've never been big on those albums (i'm a weirdo who thinks Hand It Over is the best of the Barlow-less years)

I'm skeptical that the sound quality is going to be decent, but damn, I love that cover!

dunno, if it's one of them dutch radio broadcasts, the quality will probably be pretty great.

surprised there wasn't more discussion of i bet on sky itt. one of my 2012 favorites. love the relative gentleness and thickets of softened fuzz. maybe now that the reunion novelty's worn off, it's easy to take them for granted. they deserve better. PUT A RING ON IT.

yeah it's an awesome album, could very well be my favorite of the reunion LPs. really looking forward to the Dino Jr. tracks poll.
