wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

Doesn't do anything for me either.

Gotye Sports (It's In The Name) (Spottie_Ottie_Dope), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

that Amber London is cool but suuuper retro, in a way that sounds nice now but will prob be completely tiresome when g-funk synths become all the rage w/in six months

mmg isn't really sounding too hot this year outside of 'rich forever.' whats goin on

littledotheyknow (D-40), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

i have zero problem w/ what meek's been dropping this year

bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:48 (thirteen years ago)

omarion joint's ok. pretty much every single off this ross album for the past year and a half has been terrible (although the usher one's aight), kind of hilarious that people 'anticipate' the lp anyway.

bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:49 (thirteen years ago)

if Meek keeps up the hit rate from his tapes his album should comfortably be among the best of the year

Number None, Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:56 (thirteen years ago)

yes, easily

bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:04 (thirteen years ago)

i've been jamming the travis porter album a lot. it's missing a few good hooks here and there but it's more or less what i want to hear from them.

tpp, Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:14 (thirteen years ago)

i want someone to write an article abt the influence of pop punk on rap like travis porter. i hear so much in there

tpp, Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:15 (thirteen years ago)

the MMG track that linked today is cool

lamborghini persie (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:43 (thirteen years ago)

lamborghini persie (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:44 (thirteen years ago)

altho as someone on twitter pointed out it the beat totally sounds like "penitentiary philosophy"

lamborghini persie (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 14 June 2012 23:48 (thirteen years ago)

"party time" from the new album is basically a get up kids song

tpp, Friday, 15 June 2012 08:36 (thirteen years ago)

i avoided travis porter for a while because their name sounded like a pop-punk artist

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Friday, 15 June 2012 08:50 (thirteen years ago)

the meek tape was aite to me but has no singles on the level of his shit from last yr

eh i think that's just holding him to too high a standard. yes he hasn't made any songs as good as "I'ma Boss" or "House Party" in the last 10 months, but it's not like a bunch of other rappers have. and "Lean Wit It" and "Amen" are perfectly good songs to keep it moving with in the meantime.

bronytheus (some dude), Friday, 15 June 2012 12:55 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i dont mean to suggest hes fallen off, im just hoping for more & those feel like a holding pattern i guess

littledotheyknow (D-40), Friday, 15 June 2012 13:15 (thirteen years ago)

Anyone else enjoying Joey Bada$$ and his new mixtape 1999?

Excellent shout, now I too have been listening to it all week. Well from Thurs-Today to be accurate.

pandemic, Monday, 18 June 2012 11:10 (thirteen years ago)

generally speaking, a new artist signing to a major for their own imprint is a higher risk/higher reward than signing to an established star's imprint. you might not get as much instant attention as you would signing with Wayne/Jeezy/Kanye/etc. but you also don't have to wait in line behind Lil Twist/Gibbs/Pusha T/etc. and coordinate your career with 5 other careers already in progress.

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

is there anything appealing to creating your own imprint aside from theoretically having the power to put your friends on? (and i'm not sure if that's even true tbh.) just seems like unnecessary risk for everyone involved, and sometimes just totally pointless (thinking of earl sweatshirt getting his own imprint w/ wherever he signed).

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 June 2012 14:52 (thirteen years ago)

i understand not wanting to sign w/ another rapper's imprint... that sounds pretty shitty for a new artist unless you're someone like ice burgandy who wouldn't be signing w/ a major anyway. i'm talking about just signing w/ a label outright.

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 June 2012 14:54 (thirteen years ago)

i think helping your hypeman put out a solo record is kind of a secondary concern really -- you're not gonna get to do that unless you're pretty successful either way. i think of it more in terms of, Wiz created his own franchise by not signing under a bigger star, which is how it usually happens. Drake and Nicki got to do it while signing under a big star, but that's the exception to the rule (and they also aligned w/ YM before having a huge buzz).

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

i don't think really ANY rapper anymore is just "signed to interscope" or def jam or whatever without a go-between imprint. that's just not the way the industry has worked for, like, 10 years now.

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

right, alright

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 June 2012 15:00 (thirteen years ago)

there's probably also a chicken-and-egg thing with the death of rap A&Ring -- every rapper who wants to be Jay-Z has a guy next to him who wants to be Dame Dash so they walk into the building with the team they want to run their career before they sign

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 15:02 (thirteen years ago)

like that Joey Bada$$, man what an old school Black Moon throwback

littledotheyknow (D-40), Monday, 18 June 2012 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

i dunno, m@tt you have any history of family illness? you're gonna be alive at least another 40 years, right?

some dude, Monday, 18 June 2012 18:31 (thirteen years ago)

i feel pretty good thanks :)

i hope to live to see roc marciano's grandson flow over a vampire zombie pete rock beat

seriously though the max minelli thing is so great, def would appeal to trv kvlt southern rap fans

i mean joey bada$$ isn't doing anything that new, but he can rap and the beat is solid. i'm not like freaking out about it, but tbh sometime s i feel like stuff like this is called out as comfort food derivative stuff when you could say that about tons of non NYC stuff on this thread
