It would have been a lot better if you guys were talking about Mandy More.

DJP - She's cute and seems like a total sweetheart. Also, she's been really great in a couple of movies. Candy is the only MM song I really know and it's a solid pop song. She's v likeable and just seems like she'd be fun to hang out with.

One big strike wrt to Mandy Moore? She's married to Ryan Adams, so she has questionable taste in men.

Alfred, 17.

x-post - I don't consider that a strike against her.

I don't know, I like Ryan Adams' music most of the time, but by all accounts he's a complete and total asshole.
― heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 15:36 (thirteen years ago)
Which seems like the complete opposite of Mandy.
they've been together since 08 or something and they're still pitching twitter woo
― da croupier, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)
that's like 10 years in celebrity-time and probably 50 in ryan adams-time
― da croupier, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)
x-post - Yeah, I know but I want to think he's not actually an asshole and they're cute together so whatever.

Regarding the "sounds like Ozzy" / "sounds like Sting" thing with Scrotye, the Ozzy comparison rings far more true to me. You can tell Gotye is singing at the top of his range, and that strain gives the vocal its urgency (listen to Ozzy in "Changes"--same thing). Whereas Sting's normal range is at least that high, so when he sings up there you don't get that strain. It colors the voice totally differently, and while I can hear the Sting comparison, it's Ozzy all the way. It's also the way Gotye starts each word with a soft attack and then swells in volume afterward; Ozzy does that as well, but Sting does not.

lol i just figured out what 'we are young' has been reminding me of

Gotye remind me more of P Gabriel than Sting
― freebroheem (loves laboured breathing), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:08 (thirteen years ago)
I can see that as well. There's a kind of goiter-y throatmeat kind of thing going on, whereas Sting's is more just purely high/reedy (not sure if that's quite the right word).
― Clarke B., Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:10 (thirteen years ago)
This poll should be which artist is less likely to have a follow up hit.
― the mating calls of sarcastic sharks (jer.fairall), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)
Well, the Fun song was designed to be a hit. The Gotye was a fluke. So ... Fun is more likely?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)
Sting totally strained to hit those high notes. That's why he doesn't sing them anymore.
― crüt, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:27 (thirteen years ago)
Also, he is old.
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:29 (thirteen years ago)
he never set the world on fire ;_;
― Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:30 (thirteen years ago)
So ... Fun is more likely?
eh, i guess their new single is charting in some way but the rest of the record is totally distinct from "we are young"
but i'm not good at predicting these things; "we are young" was out for almost a year before it hit
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 17:52 (thirteen years ago)
is the rest of the gotye album as good as this *~magnificent~* song?
― omar little, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:11 (thirteen years ago)
problem with the Gotye album is that it ranges from "pleasant" to "acceptable" aside from "Someone That I Used To Know" and "Eyes Wide Open"
― Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:33 (thirteen years ago)
Will We Are Young at least help ut Janelle Monae's profile?
― the mating calls of sarcastic sharks (jer.fairall), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:35 (thirteen years ago)
wouldn't she actually have to be on the song for that to happen?
― Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:36 (thirteen years ago)
the first song ive forgotten again already
i hope one day i will be able to forget the second song, it reminds me of being at work when the radio is on
― coal, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:37 (thirteen years ago)
I don't dislike either of these songs really but I am mad impressed and slightly envious of anyone who can keep that "toniiiiiiiighigh igheeeyigh ighighigt" line from getting stuck in his/her head
― Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:39 (thirteen years ago)
i really don't get how ppl thing goat.se sounds like sting, like AT ALL
― wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:50 (thirteen years ago)
i think it's time we accept that gotye is all '80s dude singers to all people, hence the #1 spot
― da croupier, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:56 (thirteen years ago)
Fun. is genetically engineered prom-rock, like some island of dr. moureau splicing of Vitamin C and Arcade Fire.
― brio, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:58 (thirteen years ago)
there's a similarity in timbre when they go up but Gotye's mid-range is much more open. Also, vintage Sting is much more comfortable on those notes than Gotye, who is really placing high in his head voice over his passagio. By comparison, Sting is barreling through his passagio and there's not that much of a timbre change throughout most of his range.
― Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 19:01 (thirteen years ago)
LISTEN IT WAS JUST ME I'M ONLY ONE PERSON AND I WAS APPARENTLY WRONG JUST FORGET I EVER MENTIONED STING GEEZ
― wolf kabob (ENBB), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

i dunno that i think it sounds like sting or whatever i just assumed it was sting or the police because its on the radio at work the whole time and thats the kind of thing that is on that station
― coal, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 19:49 (thirteen years ago)
i wish they'd play a different station or better still turn it off
― coal, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 19:50 (thirteen years ago)
I tell you what, I've had the Gotye song in my head for four days and am desperate to get it out. So far I've been singing every Blue Oyster Cult song I know...
― freebroheem (loves laboured breathing), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 21:36 (thirteen years ago)
This will help you
― emil.y, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 21:39 (thirteen years ago)
No, I agreed with you.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 21:53 (thirteen years ago)
Also, I can totally believe that it's a synth but it's definitely not even a synthesized marimba sound.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 21:54 (thirteen years ago)
I mean, it could be the melodic sensibility/phrasing that reminded me of Sting more than the technical details of the voice.
