The Kimbra part is vital to the structure of the Gotye song, imo. It didn't have to be her who sang it, but it needs to be a duet.

That fun. chorus is HUGE, but the rest of the song is really a slog.

The Gotye melody is pretty elaborate and successful, I think. Is the problem for most people with his voice? Also, is it widely known that the guitar part is a sample? I totally didn't realize that. The added xylophone is pretty key.

yeah i mean part of the appeal of "Somebody" for me that it's an international pop hit with a backing track that basically sounds like an '80s Tom Waits song

I wouldn't have cared before this thread, but seeing fun. used in a sentence is making me hate them from a grammatical standpoint.

listening to gotye again, i def hear '80s tom waits in the backdrop more than ozzy in the vocal

and actually, imagining tom waits' reaction is the first delight i've gotten out of this song since realizing he sings "your love" just like the outfield

I hope Gotye's success inspires Justin Timberlake to return as a more Phil Collins-like figure, to help millenials segue to a more adult contemporary mentality.

We Are Young is just really lumbering, especially during the chorus, it's straight out of that Snow Patrol school of 'writing an anthem in the way that some people know how to build a wall' with some Janelle tacked on. The Gotye song is perfectly pleasant.

I guess that makes Pharrell Steve Winwood.
