yorba linda carlisle (donna rouge), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

like this is just really dull

yorba linda carlisle (donna rouge), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:47 (fourteen years ago)

I HATE FUN

Yes, I'm so glad I can proudly proclaim such a thing for once.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 June 2012 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

both are better than "young" by tulisa

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

otoh i don't really like the kimbra part of STIUTK

yorba linda carlisle (donna rouge), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

i have developed a weird kind of respect for the fun. song, even though i don't like it

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 11 June 2012 18:51 (fourteen years ago)

The Kimbra part is vital to the structure of the Gotye song, imo. It didn't have to be her who sang it, but it needs to be a duet.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 June 2012 18:52 (fourteen years ago)

JF remember a couple weeks ago on FB you were like OMG I figured out who Gtoye sounds like? Was it Ozzy? Cause yesterday when I had this sting revelation I meant to go home and ask you on FB if it was Sting because I was so certain it would be. :/

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Monday, 11 June 2012 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

We Are Young is a good enough movie trailer anthem, the other one is really boring

these songs are about as alternative as steve winwood

Yeah, that was after someone posted that observation in the Gotye thread.

alternative and hip-hop collide on maroon 5's "payphone" feat. Wiz khalifa

think y'all gotye haters just can't get with the subtle pleasures of the marimba

one of these is "oh this is quite int... oh it's this!"

Mark G, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:06 (fourteen years ago)

The other is Sting/Ozzy does "Angel Eyes" Roxy, then a good singer jumps in like "Lazy line painter Jane"

Mark G, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:07 (fourteen years ago)

If this NPR-bait beats out an (admittedly annoying) earworm pop anthem, ILX has truly *matured*

gotye opening always reminds me of the theme song to ms pacman

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

That fun. chorus is HUGE, but the rest of the song is really a slog.

The Gotye melody is pretty elaborate and successful, I think. Is the problem for most people with his voice? Also, is it widely known that the guitar part is a sample? I totally didn't realize that. The added xylophone is pretty key.

yeah i mean part of the appeal of "Somebody" for me that it's an international pop hit with a backing track that basically sounds like an '80s Tom Waits song

shipl.de.al (some dude), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:13 (fourteen years ago)

I wouldn't have cared before this thread, but seeing fun. used in a sentence is making me hate them from a grammatical standpoint.

rob, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

that is the reason i am still hoping my nickname "Fun With A Period" will take off

shipl.de.al (some dude), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

sorry i don't think i'll ever be able to call you "fun with a period"

da croupier, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

how about FWAP?

"What about Fun With a Question Mark?"
"That's weird. And don't call me Mark."

this guy's a gangsta? his real name's mittens. (Hurting 2), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

listening to gotye again, i def hear '80s tom waits in the backdrop more than ozzy in the vocal

da croupier, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

and actually, imagining tom waits' reaction is the first delight i've gotten out of this song since realizing he sings "your love" just like the outfield

da croupier, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

IDGI to me it just sounds like a generic schmindie backing track

this guy's a gangsta? his real name's mittens. (Hurting 2), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

it is generic schmindie, but it also sounds like 80s tom waits. that's def a venn diagram in 2012

da croupier, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:21 (fourteen years ago)

I mean I kind of get a male Norah Jones vibe from the verse, which is not even schmindie I guess

I hope Gotye's success inspires Justin Timberlake to return as a more Phil Collins-like figure, to help millenials segue to a more adult contemporary mentality.

da croupier, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

We Are Young is just really lumbering, especially during the chorus, it's straight out of that Snow Patrol school of 'writing an anthem in the way that some people know how to build a wall' with some Janelle tacked on. The Gotye song is perfectly pleasant.

Matt DC, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

I guess that makes Pharrell Steve Winwood.

wait, this Gotye is a #1 track?? It's not bad, just seems totally unremarkable.

I miss the Format...

"Call Me Maybe"

ninguna informacion para la DEA (Eric H.), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:37 (fourteen years ago)

even tho "call me maybe" hit #1 it feels like a pop song that's still somehow bigger on the internet than it is irl

J0rdan S., Monday, 11 June 2012 19:39 (fourteen years ago)

My perspective might be warped by the number of weddings I've gone to in the last couple months.

ninguna informacion para la DEA (Eric H.), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

true. it's still only #2 tho ain't it? (xpost)

shipl.de.al (some dude), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:40 (fourteen years ago)

typo -- i knew it didn't hit #1.

J0rdan S., Monday, 11 June 2012 19:41 (fourteen years ago)

how have i not heard "call me maybe" yet until right now

goole, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:51 (fourteen years ago)

Zero interest in attempted viral lipdubs?

ninguna informacion para la DEA (Eric H.), Monday, 11 June 2012 19:53 (fourteen years ago)

you are correct

goole, Monday, 11 June 2012 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

Just read that the Gotye song is the most Shazam'd track in (short) history.

Billboard also reported recently that "Somebody" is the 15th best-selling digital song of all time, and will soon be the first track to sell 6 million copies in under a year. the scale of its success is really pretty impressively massive.
