"We Are Young" vs. "Somebody That I Used To Know"

that's where i was at a few months ago but i straight up enjoy "Somebody" now. totally just making this thread in hopes of a landslide Gotye victory.

I know there are a lot of contrarians around here but I have to imagine there are very few ILM posters who are all "Woo fun.! Fuck Gotye!"

"We Are Young" kind of reminds me of Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out," in that it starts at a sprightly tempo, then quickly slows down, and then stays at that slow, grinding, monotonous tempo for minute after minute until the song finally ends.

It sounds like "Take Me Out" were "Take Me Out" lacking an interesting rhythm, good guitar riffs, and a singer who wasn't adenoidal.

I like both of these songs, but I like the fun. one slightly better - mostly because I haven't been bombarded with shitty remixes of it yet like the Gotye one.

neither of these songs are very good. "we are young" is more directly offensive, "stiutk" is blander/milder.

well i guess that was their genre-bending second record but i don't know, the format were pretty universally appreciated by people in emo scenes, and dude's a huge pop-punk fan, is why i make the association

I hate them both but the other day I realized that Gotye sounds exactly like Sting during the chorus and now I keep picturing Sting singing it and it's weird.

if Sting sang it he wouldn't make you forget that he had expected to live his life without ever meeting this "somebody" again.

Gotye sounding like Ozzy is a much revelatory comparison than Sting imo

omg... that 'eu si te pego' song has been inescapable in Mexico too but if I thought that one was annoying the english version is completely laughable. 'Eu si te pego' should translate as something like 'I'd fuck you' not 'if i catch you'. The lyrics in english sound so... wrong. Why would they even attempt to translate it?

See, if you English-speaking folks didn't have such a phobia for foreign languages we wouldn't have these sort of abortions in the first place.

That's what I find so funny about it, it seems they realized it was too much work for a simple joke halfway through the process but were already in too deep to pull back and so we have this sort of beautiful, anticlimatic mess.
