specifically i wanna know more abt this bit:Kenn had planned to spend just a year in the United States, but within ten months of moving to New York, he flew to Chicago. He spoke little-to-no English, and knew nobody in the city; he just knew he wanted to make music. Chief Keef's uncle Keith discovered him walking down the street in Woodlawn (a neighborhood that is 98 percent African American), and found him a place to stay. "He took me to an apartment right there across the street"—Kenn gestures out the front window—"and I stayed over there and started to do music. Keef came through, Santana came through, and we started recording."

I'm not worried about the hype at all. The man has minor hits, a story to go with them and a production unit with a defined sound. Let's not pretend as if we would be doing him a favor by not listening, writing, talking, quarreling etc. That stuff is plainly hypocritical. This music was made to be heard. If it's out there, it's up for grabs. Keef's objective has never been to become the new Andre 3000. He either makes more hits, more music worth talking about, or he doesn't. End of story. Casting him as some sort of victim to the hype machine is just in bad taste.

that Amber London is cool but suuuper retro, in a way that sounds nice now but will prob be completely tiresome when g-funk synths become all the rage w/in six months

― bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:48 (fourteen years ago)
omarion joint's ok. pretty much every single off this ross album for the past year and a half has been terrible (although the usher one's aight), kind of hilarious that people 'anticipate' the lp anyway.
― bronytheus (some dude), Thursday, 14 June 2012 22:49 (fourteen years ago)
if Meek keeps up the hit rate from his tapes his album should comfortably be among the best of the year

i've been jamming the travis porter album a lot. it's missing a few good hooks here and there but it's more or less what i want to hear from them.

eh i think that's just holding him to too high a standard. yes he hasn't made any songs as good as "I'ma Boss" or "House Party" in the last 10 months, but it's not like a bunch of other rappers have. and "Lean Wit It" and "Amen" are perfectly good songs to keep it moving with in the meantime.

Excellent shout, now I too have been listening to it all week. Well from Thurs-Today to be accurate.

generally speaking, a new artist signing to a major for their own imprint is a higher risk/higher reward than signing to an established star's imprint. you might not get as much instant attention as you would signing with Wayne/Jeezy/Kanye/etc. but you also don't have to wait in line behind Lil Twist/Gibbs/Pusha T/etc. and coordinate your career with 5 other careers already in progress.
― bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:51 (fourteen years ago)
is there anything appealing to creating your own imprint aside from theoretically having the power to put your friends on? (and i'm not sure if that's even true tbh.) just seems like unnecessary risk for everyone involved, and sometimes just totally pointless (thinking of earl sweatshirt getting his own imprint w/ wherever he signed).
― J0rdan S., Monday, 18 June 2012 14:52 (fourteen years ago)
i understand not wanting to sign w/ another rapper's imprint... that sounds pretty shitty for a new artist unless you're someone like ice burgandy who wouldn't be signing w/ a major anyway. i'm talking about just signing w/ a label outright.
― J0rdan S., Monday, 18 June 2012 14:54 (fourteen years ago)
i think helping your hypeman put out a solo record is kind of a secondary concern really -- you're not gonna get to do that unless you're pretty successful either way. i think of it more in terms of, Wiz created his own franchise by not signing under a bigger star, which is how it usually happens. Drake and Nicki got to do it while signing under a big star, but that's the exception to the rule (and they also aligned w/ YM before having a huge buzz).
