the warmth of emotion of that album is certainly not here

Err...'Make Love'. Basically Discovery melted into one track.
With those last three tracks they really seem to go for the 21st century Kraftwerk crown.

they use the same sounds too much for my liking - great as the sounds are! (the vocoder esp.). i was hoping for MORE, DP continue to frustrate me by not taking the bells and whistles/kitchen sink approach of Basement Jaxx but in spite of that this is still a pretty strong record for dancefloors - The Brainwasher and Technologic should go down well.

One advantage is that this album is much more feasible live than Discovery. But if they tour it, would they play Discovery songs? That would almost be cruel after denying us for so long, but how could they ever play live again and not play anything from Discovery? The alternative is that they never play live again, which may or may not be worse, hmm.

i just can't quite agree with how they feel about progression vs/via monotony. i mean WHY does more not happen in 'Emotion'? WHY do they seem to favour this 'progression via monotony' approach? i'm not satisfied by a 'because it doesn't NEED anything else' response, i think it would be better with something more. 'six week albums' is a neat concept but i'd rather they'd spent at least six months on this if they're going to do it at all. i think time IS a factor. not that this sounds 'bashed out quickly' completely (tho it does to an extent). there are moments on 'Homework' I did find boring because the monotony was too much, other times it was okay. It's not a problem on 'Discovery' because half of it is song-based and the tracks are brief (with the exception of 'Too Long' which i'm not really a fan of either!). Here they've stretched them again and it's stretching it maybe too far for me, tho I'd give this album 7 out of 10 overall and the good bits are VERY VERY GOOD INDEED.

Omar's comment re Kraftwerk rings true for me as I still cannot really stand to listen to their most repetetive, nagging stuff, however sweet it can be sonically (as is the case with 'Emotion' which has lovely vocoder, that frog-like blurping bass and the major pads and the trusted 'one step up at a time' progression)

Goddammit. "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" is based largely on an Edwin Byrdsong sample but it fucks with it mightily after a minute. "Robot Rock" is the first few seconds of that Breakwater track, and nothing more. Thanks for telling me there's no motherfucking Santa Claus, Jed. Hope you're pleased with yourself.

i'm also wondering if there will be an unofficial remix version available on the same day HAA is released to follow the recent unofficial Prodigy and Chemical brothers remix editions. i may ask mr cryonmyconsole about this...

Steve M, I think you are on the mark. I would hesistate to say they phoned it in, but I do think the 6 week recording time hurt them. Although it's only been two listens, I don't know how much depth there is to these songs. It's certainly very catchy and well-produced, but I was hoping DP would give us more than just a series of tracks that rely on one or two big riffs throughout the entire song. After waiting 4 years to get an album with 9 straight-forward tracks (and one interlude,) I feel a bit cheated.

"Technologic" is the one that really upsets me. It's such a pale retread of "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger," right down to the lyrics, which go: "buy it / use it / break it / fix it / trash it / change it / now upgrade it."

Still, "Human After All" and "Robot Rock" and "Make Love" (which strangely reminds me of the intro to "Little Red Corvette") are all g-r-e-a-t.

After writing this I am wondering if some of the cuts are looped versions of the real tracks.

I'm wondering if this IS a loop leak.
I'm buying the final in any case; if this is just looped beats, it's the best loop I've heard.
Still getting comfortable with this suckah but oh so excited. It just gloms on with the first listen, moreso than anything I can remember since Katamari.

"Human After All" is my new favorite song - it's really beautiful. The rest is amazing, if not brain-bending like my first run through of Discovery.

Well, yeah, certainly not as oh-my-god-what-is-this-my-brain-is-melting instant fun of Discovery, but still a really good molding of Homework and Discovery. The short time spent on the album only works wonders on the music; it feels so fresh, spontaneous and fun in a equally stressed-out/mellow way. I just can't stop listening to it.

Um OK this album is pretty fucking great. It's not the SAME as discovery which is apparently what some of you were hoping but I love how the opening track is like Felix's "Neon Human" except way better, and I loved "neon human"!!!

My original post was a long ass affair, in which I think the words "great" and "mentalists" were employed.

The USE-ness of the title track aside, I'm generally feeling the 5 other tracks I heard ('Make Love' must be a fake-out looper tho').

ha, exactly what i thought. incidentally, as much as i love the idea of 'Discovery' being the best album in years on paper (apart from Kid A and Loveless obviously), it never was for me. i will probably love Human After All as much as Discovery seeing as how my reaction to Discovery the first time is pretty similar to how i'm feeling about HAA now.
