You would think the album would lose steam after the insanity of "Bonin' in the Boneyard" but IMO the true genius is that they ramp the energy down without losing any of the intensity or awesomeness.
― WHEY AHR MAH DREGUNS? (DJP), Thursday, 7 June 2012 21:29 (fourteen years ago)
purchased for the fun ska joints and then the mellower songs sneak up on you
― bnw, Thursday, 7 June 2012 21:31 (fourteen years ago)
"glasses" and "swingin" were on the bonin in the boneyard cd single. I like the former a LOT, but don'tm know if everything e;se on this album.

I hate to say it, but the answer is obviously Sublime's self-titled

did rage against the machine put out a record in 1996?
― Dominique, Friday, 8 June 2012 19:33 (fourteen years ago)
yes. it was not part of this aesthetic continuum.
― how's life, Friday, 8 June 2012 20:57 (fourteen years ago)
seems like it was at that point that "this aesthetic continuum" had fed back on itself and/or splintered
― Dominique, Friday, 8 June 2012 21:19 (fourteen years ago)
or was directly and proudly influenced by the Minutemen, Fishbone and the Beastie Boys, ymmv
― calm me maybe (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 9 June 2012 06:13 (fourteen years ago)
I thought RATM was influenced by Korn or something.
― how's life, Saturday, 9 June 2012 10:37 (fourteen years ago)
that would be a neat trick, considering RATM formed 2 years before Korn did
― Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Saturday, 9 June 2012 18:07 (fourteen years ago)
"Ghetto Soundwave" is the only song I remember, and it's gorgeous. Never got into album-oriented Fishbones past the perfect first EP but I'll give this one another try. For some reason I always transposed "Bonin' in the Boneyard" to the tune of "Rollin' on a River" in my mind.
Cornelius is wild, never heard them. If you're going to look for mid-'90s pretenders, maybe Arab on Radar, NoMeansNo, Rancid, Fugazi--none as great as Minutemen, but all better than Sublime, Beck, or RATM IMHO.
― Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 9 June 2012 18:35 (fourteen years ago)
Lumping nomeansno into the mid-90s category is not ok. And also wrong.
― I want L'interieur chicken, not Hausu chicken (jjjusten), Saturday, 9 June 2012 19:57 (fourteen years ago)
that generational "yes, actually"/"fuck you, no quarter" divide around Sublime is so interesting imo

1992 should be 40 oz to freedom. 1996 should NOT be the self-titled sublime, but I don't really know where to go with it.
― how's life, Saturday, 9 June 2012 20:50 (fourteen years ago)
Is this a list of albums released every four years, beginning in 1984, that don't sound like one another?

I think I'm only getting every other post on this end. Either that or I've totally flaked on my ILX mythology.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 9 June 2012 21:22 (fourteen years ago)
Anyway, I was in a high school band. The guitarist really liked the Cure and the Smiths. The bassist was really into the Chili Peppers. The singer liked Hendrix. I liked Fishbone. I had yellow sneakers.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 9 June 2012 21:24 (fourteen years ago)
I had a high school band where 3 guys were into fishbone and the specials and op ivy and the drummer was into the eagles.

actually, he was really into zima, then don henley.

We played "Purple Haze," "Foxy Lady" and "Knock Me Down."

nah, it's a list of albums that had been previously mentioned itt, united by punk, funk, sweat and brotherhood as an ethos.

huh, i expected more support for "bonin' in the boneyard" after all the talk on this thread
― contenderizer, Thursday, 21 June 2012 01:33 (thirteen years ago)
Ma and Pa was my favorite for a long time back when I first got this album back in 6th grade (a direct result of Anthony Keidis' exhortation to "funk it up, Fishbone!"). I came from a super-functional household, so I didn't really i.d. with the lyrics, but it was probably the first ska song I heard. "Fighting for love on an angel's feather/why don't you get your shit together" is such a great line.

XP - Did you check out X and fIREHOSE too?
― MaresNest, Thursday, 21 June 2012 23:42 (thirteen years ago)
Haven't played this in like 20 years but I liked it at the time. Not as much as The Reality of My Surroundings or their debut EP tho.
Somehow never got around to hearing In Your Face. And by the time Give A Monkey A Brain or whatever came out I kinda hated everything.
― Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Friday, 22 June 2012 02:28 (thirteen years ago)
Give A Monkey A Brain is still my favourite fishbone LP. Truth & Soul is excellent, tho - would've voted Ghetto Soundwave, or Ma & Pa, or Question Of Life.
― Just saying. (stevie), Friday, 22 June 2012 11:10 (thirteen years ago)
Really? After "Reality ..." which is one of my fave LPs, period, I hated "Monkey."

Much later. This was back in middle and high school when I was lucky to buy 4 or 5 albums a year. I got a fIREHOSE album maybe four years later and didn't get into X until after college. "The New World" was a staple on the radio when I was a kid and I just lumped them in with other middle-of-the-road adult alternative based on that song.
