LimbsKing, may I suggest a short breather after the 2000 poll, maybe punctuated by something like a "worst Modern Rock #1 to get 0 votes in any of these polls" type poll?
― Doctor Casino, Saturday, 2 June 2012 17:30 (fourteen years ago)
I don't know if ILX Blink 182 love is funny or endearing in a "he ain't heavy, he's my brother" sort of way
― we gotta move these refrigerators (CaptainLorax), Saturday, 2 June 2012 17:38 (fourteen years ago)
Same goes with Green Day. They had some good songs on Dookie and a couple from another early album but that's about it
― we gotta move these refrigerators (CaptainLorax), Saturday, 2 June 2012 17:41 (fourteen years ago)
I actually really like the parent album for the Green Day single here, but that's one of the weaker songs on it. Fuel wins this one, then, by default.

The Dandy Warhols - Bohemian Like You
still love this song. every time i hear it (which is basically like never) i am made happy.

Wow Otherside is so much better than that overwrought Shimmer rewrite

I listened to "Otherside" in the past week because of this poll and I can't even remember how it goes.
(I'm not really expressing great passion about "Hemorrhage", to be clear.)

Maybe I just have a block with processing the RHCP as gothy mopers?
It's kind of funny that everyone who voted for Fuel seemed to do it as a 'by default' sort of deal. Maybe I should have just abstained.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 3 June 2012 06:25 (fourteen years ago)
I actually looked up an interview with Blink 182 to see if they pronounce "things" like that when they talk.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 3 June 2012 06:26 (fourteen years ago)
(They do.)
it's cool sund4r. The whole Californication album has always seemed to me like RHCP's attempt to write a whole album's worth of songs like Soul to Squeeze, which is my favorite song of theirs. I don't think they get as horrifically bland as everyone here is implying until By the Way
I also think ILX underrates the singles from One Hot Minute and am tempted to check if that album is on Spotify.
― freebroheem (loves laboured breathing), Sunday, 3 June 2012 06:31 (fourteen years ago)
californication's a good record. but i've always hated funk RHCP.

I actually feel a little bad that all I've done here is post dismissive opinions without thinking critically about anything. Ten years ago, I hated it when people in their 30s did that about stuff I liked. So it's more interesting to hear about why people like these songs. I think I'd love to hear a defence of "Kryptonite".

lol not touching that one. i will say this:

i do actually think 3DD's recent context as spokesband for the Army works really well for "Not My Time"

calling something a rewrite because it's the same band is lame, they don't really sound alike at all.
― kel ler/pharmacists (some dude), Sunday, 3 June 2012 10:36 (fourteen years ago)
"Aeroplane" is my favorite of their "fast" ones.
― go down on you in a thyatrr (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 3 June 2012 11:23 (fourteen years ago)
yeah "Aeroplane" is secretly one of their best post-BSSM singles. "Warped" isn't bad too. it's just "My Friends" (and probably the rest of the album) that gives that era of the band such a stench.
― kel ler/pharmacists (some dude), Sunday, 3 June 2012 11:33 (fourteen years ago)
that prechorus "too far away" is almost a direct quote from the chorus in Shimmer("too far away/for me to hold"); not the same melody, but def the same accents...which is not the same thing as a 're-write', but is some pretty bald recyclage. Of course it could also be intentionally self-referential (the immediately preceding lyrics are "don't you remember anything I said when I said") Still: lame.
That said, re-listening to this song now, it is a bit better than I remember, though I still like "Otherside" more.
Also I listened to "Parallel Universe", the only song from the first four on Californication that I didn't remember, and it was dope. That album might've aged better than I even thought.

"Aeroplane" is the worst fucking song, come on now
― that is a weird thing to bring up over lean cuisine (DJP), Sunday, 3 June 2012 15:11 (fourteen years ago)
looking at the one hot minute tracklisting i seem to have excised most of it from my memory. 'aeroplane' is alright, 'my friends' is p dire, i vaguely remember 'walkabout' being terrible, and hey 'pea' is um some kind of charming. the rest, i've got nothing.
― Merdeyeux, Sunday, 3 June 2012 15:18 (fourteen years ago)
that prechorus "too far away" is almost a direct quote from the chorus in Shimmer("too far away/for me to hold");
To be fair, 1) he's saying "Don't fall away" and 2) the refrain's lyric is lifted straight from Bernie Taupin, so if you want to go after them for laziness, there's a pretty strong angle right there.
― Doctor Casino, Sunday, 3 June 2012 15:26 (fourteen years ago)

poor green day, i've never heard that 3 doors down song but my prediction is that it's worse than 'minority'.
so we have ten lurking papa roach fans who have, ten years on, finally made an impact on ilm.

shockingly, the 3DD song is NOT worse than "Minority" (they really should have tied tho)
