Bringing that gritty funk from the mean streets of Vancouver.

I'm torn between my desire to hate on the Red Bull Music Academy and my desire to give them a thumbs up for giving away free FLACs.

If EDM is this decade's alternative rock, does that make Skrillex: Eddie Vedder?

Josiah Alan, Monday, 11 June 2012 08:39 (fourteen years ago)

My mate Sully was good enough to pop down and do a set for us on Saturday. I may be biased, but the guy needs his own Fabric cd - very cool blends of uk bass and us-style house, lots of cut-up mixes etc.

I know dungeon dubstep is backward looking and not very exciting to most but I'm determined to plumb the depths.

Ok this isn't dungeon, but it's weird and good.

Josiah Alan, Thursday, 14 June 2012 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

that's cool but also almost entirely based on what is known in my circle as 'the forbidden rhythm'

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:12 (fourteen years ago)

What kick on the 1 and 2 and snare on the 3 ?

Josiah Alan, Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

is that the lambada rhythm?

the late great, Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:22 (fourteen years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyXVwuDJXwE&feature=related

This one? Sounds sort of like a clave, slower reggaeton kind of thing.

Josiah Alan, Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:25 (fourteen years ago)

Swindle is probably referencing soca more than anything but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Josiah Alan, Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

Speaking of latin rhythms and dubstep, so psyched for the new Mala album.

Seriously listen to the last minute and a half on that one.

Josiah Alan, Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

forbidden rhythm =

1 2 3 4
x-x-xx-x-x-xx-x-
???

they loooovin the crut (The Reverend), Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

super curious why it's forbidden

the late great, Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:58 (fourteen years ago)

yup, especially the first half:

1 2 3
x-x-xx-x-

it's like the go-to unfunky clave for fake latin beats. sure it can be voiced well or disguised/extended but i try to stay away from it when possible.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:58 (fourteen years ago)

aka 'the white man's rhythm'

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 15:59 (fourteen years ago)

is there a link to an mp3 where i can hear that rhythm? i am terrible at reading tab for beats.

the late great, Thursday, 14 June 2012 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

It works well in that track.

they loooovin the crut (The Reverend), Thursday, 14 June 2012 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

yeah agreed.

my mind is going blank for classic examples but i will post one when i think of it.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 14 June 2012 16:47 (fourteen years ago)

Those mala tracks sound great. I was wondering what he's been up to, so bring on the album.

Hennesy Williams (EDB), Thursday, 14 June 2012 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

I guess I should listen to those Mala tracks now. I only had time to listen to one track before I left for work and I was intrigued by the forbidden rhythm, which now that I think of it, might be kind of similar to a montuno rhythm in how it switches from on- to off-beat?

they loooovin the crut (The Reverend), Friday, 15 June 2012 01:38 (fourteen years ago)

ha ok, here is an audio example of the forbidden rhythm: www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=h3JFEfdK_Ls#t=145s

40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 15 June 2012 13:41 (fourteen years ago)

don't know why that didn't embed, but check the piano lick in chorus of billy joel's 'my life'.

40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 15 June 2012 13:43 (fourteen years ago)

ha

they loooovin the crut (The Reverend), Friday, 15 June 2012 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

I think the difference is it being just one layer of polyrhythm in the Swindle versus being the sole point of rhythmic interest in the Billy Joel.

they loooovin the crut (The Reverend), Friday, 15 June 2012 19:18 (fourteen years ago)

can't believe nobody's ever sampled the first minute of that billy joel track, never heard that part before

the late great, Friday, 15 June 2012 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

oh, you're just talking about the hat rhythm at the beginning of the swindle track?

bum bum badabum bum?

the late great, Friday, 15 June 2012 19:23 (fourteen years ago)

can't believe nobody's ever sampled the first minute of that billy joel track, never heard that part before

had the same thought

oh, you're just talking about the hat rhythm at the beginning of the swindle track?

nah, the main handclap rhythm that comes in at :38 and then gets passed around to the bass > synths > everything

40oz of tears (Jordan), Friday, 15 June 2012 19:34 (fourteen years ago)

heh that rhythm is quite overused in grime

the late great, Friday, 15 June 2012 19:37 (fourteen years ago)

i mean ffs how often do you hear a wide-open break like that?

the late great, Friday, 15 June 2012 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

http://www.djtechtools.com/2012/06/17/the-age-of-the-edm-rockstar/

Finding the sudden popularity of "EDM" sort of depressing, but not nearly as depressing as all the crappy articles popping up in my Facebook page. This doesn't feel like winning.

Josiah Alan, Wednesday, 20 June 2012 04:33 (thirteen years ago)

Let's combine all the worst excesses of disco, rave and festival cultures and call it a trend.

This might have a little crossover with the Interzone Bubblers thread, but the new LOL Boys Enter the Unknown mix for UTTU is pretty stunning: http://boomkat.com/cds/533842-lol-boys-enter-the-unknown

It's got a lot of stuff going on in the mix but what strikes me most is how it reminds me a lot of 92/93 hardcore.

"Moments In Heartbreak" sounded better the first time I heard it:

I absolutely refuse anything that wasn't made in Atlanta "trap" music.

you're in for a fun year then
