I'm assuming the first few tracks here represent the gold that makes it worth sitting through Mistajam's non-discriminatory nightly frankenstep trudge then?

Enjoying these summery House vibes...

err probably wouldnt go that far, he does get the odd tasty bit first though sure. beyond that it's a good show in a uh, musicological sense...? ie he does discriminate, you just have crank the old negative capability to 11 and figure out how

glad you singled the tifa out, it's fantastic and i agree, better than nearly everything ever

r|t|c, Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:25 (fourteen years ago)

It might be nearly six months old but it's still my summer jam 2012 and I'm surprised nobody else has posted it yet

how quickly we forget :(

Number None, Friday, 1 June 2012 22:40 (fourteen years ago)

Also its not on Youtube (maybe somebody could "have a word") but the Funkystepz remix of Rihanna's "Birthday Cake" surely belongs here?

boxedjoy, Friday, 1 June 2012 22:45 (fourteen years ago)

undoubtedly. "The Motto" too

Number None, Friday, 1 June 2012 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

god that cheryl cole royal-t remix is everything

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Tuesday, 5 June 2012 11:47 (fourteen years ago)

i do like 'love di vibes' but it's a bit like vybz 'summertime' last year where it feels a little too prepack ubiquitous tokenistic to really clasp to my bosom the same way as other stuff; you would be right in pointing out i tend not to hold similarly on-the-nose hits from other genres up to that same standard however.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 5 June 2012 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

there is something slickly opportunistic about musicians from tropical countries putting out well-timed for foreign audiences summer hangout anthems. I definitely felt that way about 'summertime' (I mean, i'm not Jamaican, but I don't think you need to wait until summertime to have a pool party there), which is why 'ravin' was so obv superior. maybe it's because Pacific Northwest summers don't really start until July--it's 58 degrees F right now--that I'm not as bothered by 'love di vibes' and its transparent attempt to bottle summertime magic in a three-minute package.

HOW D'YOU THINK I FEEL WHEN YOU CALL MY NAME

i feel ever more certain there is no greater transcendent, fizzing joy in this world than 'dami duro'

r|t|c, Saturday, 9 June 2012 11:30 (fourteen years ago)

it is SO MUCH that it near enough puts a lump in your throat

r|t|c, Saturday, 9 June 2012 11:31 (fourteen years ago)

and its prologue

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ0XDkdwc9w

like how many of these ganky rictus-featured 'i gotta feeling' type getting ready for friday nite tunes you hear EVER make you feel anything but cattle-herded, co-opted, dead meat? 'what u wanna do' asks one simple, open, momentary question over and over and kaleidoscopically over until eyes bulge and pupils dilate bright black with every endless neon possibility stretching out before you, like the two big bang atoms colliding, imploring and demanding existence floods the void

r|t|c, Saturday, 9 June 2012 12:01 (fourteen years ago)

Wait so has Naija pop actually found a use for hands-in-the-air fake Guetta house that is not only not hateful but actually conveys the joy that yr Euro or American hacks *think* they're getting at? I feel like another bit of the source code of pop has been cracked or something.

Matt DC, Saturday, 9 June 2012 12:07 (fourteen years ago)

Like maybe the producers realising rhythms other than 4/4 thud might actually work with eurohouse cheese or maybe its just that the dead-eyed cynicism you expect from purveyors of gigantic filterdisco chords is conspicuous by its absence.

Matt DC, Saturday, 9 June 2012 12:11 (fourteen years ago)

frankly my dear ilm, when it comes to afrobeats all i wanna hear is

less fucking questions

that dami duro joint is banging but also soooo poorly mixed :( its like i have to imagine how it would sound on a dancefloor if it were well mastered. the amazon mp3 sounds like a ripped youtube stream

littledotheyknow (D-40), Monday, 11 June 2012 20:04 (fourteen years ago)

irrelevant to me, next contestant please

r|t|c, Monday, 11 June 2012 20:07 (fourteen years ago)

does all of your favorite music exist only in the 64 kbps pirate radio of your mind

littledotheyknow (D-40), Monday, 11 June 2012 20:09 (fourteen years ago)

i just take it as it comes kiddo, my ears stay clean of ur diseases of affluence

like who's really the fetishist here?

r|t|c, Monday, 11 June 2012 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

this thread needs a spotify playlist like yesterday

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 11 June 2012 20:37 (fourteen years ago)

hey i said its a cool song. i just wish the mix didn't all bleed together. look at it from the POV of a DJ who is trying to work w/ an unweildy crowd unfamiliar with the music (& i don't even mean diplo at a trendy club but like, the people who are at the front lines of spinning this stuff) & its just that much harder to convince a crowd of a song's worth when it doesn't have presence. there's a subconscious bias from NORMALS against shittily mastered songs when they haven't had them hammered into their brains already by radio or what have u

littledotheyknow (D-40), Monday, 11 June 2012 20:44 (fourteen years ago)

Ah...Wizkid. No Lele is the one that hooked me on afrobeat after hearing it as the opening track on that abrantee tape. Such an amazing intro (to both the song and the sound)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=XDZfey8bpSk

Benny B, Monday, 11 June 2012 22:55 (fourteen years ago)

seriously the intro to that tune just slays me every single time. Those tumbling drum rolls and glorious unfolding melody.

Benny B, Monday, 11 June 2012 23:06 (fourteen years ago)

just checked Dami Duro, wow. Rushiest thing I've heard for ages. Will try not to spoil this one by overplaying it, this is uncommonly powerful stuff.

Benny B, Monday, 11 June 2012 23:11 (fourteen years ago)

ok i made a spotify playlist of some of the songs mentioned on this thread. of course you guys' unassailable forward-thinking means many great songs aren't there, but it's something

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 01:18 (thirteen years ago)

Humble thanks to r/t/c for posting that D'Prince track.

More Wizkid:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOUdtGyjT44

This one is pretty brazen in its use of girly trance chords, military snares AND borderline irritating Pon De Floor synths all at once.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:16 (thirteen years ago)

Also amazing.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 12 June 2012 18:16 (thirteen years ago)

lol Matt you could have just said ATTN DJP

Victory Chainsaw! (DJP), Tuesday, 12 June 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Thursday, 14 June 2012 06:51 (thirteen years ago)

there is a 'murder' remix with cecile and leshurr you will probs enjoy more still

rob's mentioned it a few times iirc

r|t|c, Thursday, 14 June 2012 10:28 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i heard that too, idk i like leshurr on it but lioness feels a bit tacked on and it was kind of perfect as it was

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Thursday, 14 June 2012 10:35 (thirteen years ago)

aw, admittedly most of the guests bring their C game lyrically, but that song reminds me pleasantly of middle school gymnasium dances soundtracked by En vogue and Salt n Pepa. the verses are charmingly artless and unthreatening.

I'm going to have to stay inside all summer to catch up on this thread.

rob, Thursday, 14 June 2012 14:35 (thirteen years ago)

Every time I visit this thread the number of embedded videos breaks my computer, so I'm probably going to be here into November...
