review of nominations and VOTING for (very nebulously defined) ELECTRONIC DANCE TRACKS of the 00s

The thing with a theme like this, unlike a single-artist poll, is that there are so many factions - there are producers, labels, even genres I've ignored entirely and I'm sure that will be the case for a lot of voters, so you need a certain number of voters before any meaningful overlap will occur. I can see most of my tracks dying a lonely death if there are less than 20 ballots.

Get wolves (DL), Wednesday, 30 May 2012 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

just sent in my ballot too.
at some point I had to stop splitting hairs between adjacent tunes out of the 50 and hope for approx current favour/ranking within around 10 spots, except for the all important Top 5/Top 10. loved hearing (relistening to) many of these tunes again!

i'll have one in within the next couple of hours. surprisingly happy with it. ps. midi rain 'always' was a biggish revival tune for ellen allien amongst others but is from like 1991.

I vote for extension

so do I

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 22:41 (fourteen years ago)

whatever i just scanned the list and made a shortlist of the ones i could hum (about 75) and then just got rid of the microhouse

the late great, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

ok here is something i am thinking - in the meantime, could we crowd-source the composer and label for each track?

then we could also tabulate top artists and top labels

the late great, Wednesday, 30 May 2012 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

For whatever it's worth, even though I'm a fan of Avalanches/Basement Jaxx/Daft Punk/The Knife/LCD Soundsystem, I'm probably gonna leave that stuff off.

yes.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 31 May 2012 01:25 (fourteen years ago)

I've got swept up in a lot of stuff this week I didn't count on. I can still dash one off but it won't be as considered as I'd like. So yes, an extension if at all possible.

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Thursday, 31 May 2012 02:16 (fourteen years ago)

extension would be great

plie-se extend

Fas Ro Duh (Gukbe), Thursday, 31 May 2012 06:15 (fourteen years ago)

Gonna hit the original deadline I think (a bit of a rarity for me in all aspects of life!)

Inflation really stands up I think, what an atmosphere that track has, it's very, ahem, cough, cinematic.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 31 May 2012 09:05 (fourteen years ago)

some how i never noticed this until now. but no 'love story'? pffft.

Ahhh, I knew I should have nominated something from Shut Up and Dance!

Boy Georbison (EDB), Thursday, 31 May 2012 09:28 (fourteen years ago)

I kind of hate Mathew Jonson, but I'm finding it really hard to remove Marionette from my list, despite it being a completely joyless experience to dance to.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 31 May 2012 09:30 (fourteen years ago)

Removing it 'cause I've got so many Cobblestone Jazz tracks in there and I much prefer those to dance to.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 31 May 2012 09:40 (fourteen years ago)

there's always typerope!

Boy Georbison (EDB), Thursday, 31 May 2012 09:52 (fourteen years ago)

done! that was emotional.

tpp, Thursday, 31 May 2012 10:46 (fourteen years ago)

Nah, that went out far earlier. I find his solo stuff a little too dry. If there was any solo effort of his I'd pick, it would be this remix:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CFL60yk0rw

Anyway, this was super tough, but going through the list brought up a few "so THATS what that track was called" moments and a few new discoveries. These are the closest eleven to making it, that I had to cut off in the end.

kassem mosse - 12 a1
akufen - deck the house
donato dozzy - gol
akufen - skidoos
efdemin - lohn & brot
mosca - bax
blawan - getting me down
cottam - 003b
mala - anti war dub
instra:mental - end credits
fish go deep - the cure and the cause (dennis ferrer remix)

(x-post)

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 31 May 2012 10:53 (fourteen years ago)

sooo will this get extended or not? because I feel sleepy and I want to make my ballot tomorriw

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 31 May 2012 11:28 (fourteen years ago)

Extend it over the weekend, but no further, please! I'd love to see the results next week.

Tuomas, Thursday, 31 May 2012 11:34 (fourteen years ago)

Surely anyone who's interested in the poll can write down a list of 50 tracks over one weekend? It took me like 30 minutes to come up with my ballot.

Tuomas, Thursday, 31 May 2012 11:35 (fourteen years ago)

I have to say I don't really see the point in posting in a poll like this if you're not interested in spending some time listening to tracks you are unfamiliar with, but I guess people have their own reasons.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 31 May 2012 12:52 (fourteen years ago)

I'm having enough trouble whittling down the tracks I loved at the time to worry about taking on new ones.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:06 (fourteen years ago)

More fun to discover things in the countdown imo.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:06 (fourteen years ago)

please extension yes, i have a lot of but-who-do-i-love-best listening left to do

dethklok piccalo (c sharp major), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:18 (fourteen years ago)

Matt OTM. I see absolutely no point in diligently plugging through hundreds of nominations and then attempting to weigh up new discoveries against tunes you've loved for years. That's what the roll out is for. I don't like polls to feel like homework.

Get wolves (DL), Thursday, 31 May 2012 13:50 (fourteen years ago)

Son.sine - Upekah

― mmmm, Sunday, 22 April 2012

think melchior's deep down should be lets go deep most have been half asleep when doing a nomination

coal, Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:30 (fourteen years ago)

I have it down to 50, just need to order 'em.

Never translate Dutch (jaymc), Thursday, 31 May 2012 14:31 (fourteen years ago)

Damn, would have voted for 'Lets Go Deep', so simple but so effective.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 31 May 2012 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

I had thought it was late 90s otherwise I might have nominated it myself, but it's "only" ten years old.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 31 May 2012 15:54 (fourteen years ago)

How can you hate Mathew Jonson when he made Typerope and the Followed By Angels 12"??

JacobSanders, Thursday, 31 May 2012 16:13 (fourteen years ago)

I do both. I voted based on tunes I already know, but I intend to wade through the entirety of the spotify list to find tunes I like that I hadn't heard before.

Basically if I felt obliged to check out every nomination I would never vote. I tried it with the hip hop tracks but I was ploughing through them at such a rate that I underrated tracks which only really hit me when they featured in the countdown. I don't like to feel like I'm just harvesting music en masse. But obviously everyone approaches these things differently.

Get wolves (DL), Thursday, 31 May 2012 18:02 (fourteen years ago)

i know everyone hates him now but it's a terrible oversight that the supermayer remix of gotye's heart's a mess isn't among the nominees.

second only to popcorn (or something), Thursday, 31 May 2012 18:08 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah that song is beautiful

JacobSanders, Thursday, 31 May 2012 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

I just find Jonson's solo tracks too austere and joyless, and more than a bit over fussy.

Chewshabadoo, Thursday, 31 May 2012 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

voted (first time ever in one of these big ILM polls). after spending weeks slowly narrowing it down to 50 I found it almost impossible to sensible order them outside the top 10 or so. doubtless I'll be kicking myself about that once the rundown starts.
