i mean expecting bieber to have the same career arc as timberlake just because that's what he's blatantly being groomed to do is like expecting ja rule to eventually have a discography equal to 2pac

i could totally see him going off the rails a la britney if his management wasn't so tight -- still may happen cuz he seems to have a small rebellious streak

timberlake is a high bar tho -- there's nothing really to suggest that bieber has that kind of songwriting talent, for instance -- he's supposedly some writing on this album and the songs are definitely impressive but if he ever puts out an album 75% as good as 'futuresex/lovesounds' i'd be floored

i think he could have a pretty rewarding career as a singles artist whose albums are half pretty good, half total nonsense -- but he's still far, far away from his mid-20s

I know nothing about the dude, but does he work with any auteur producers, or just hitmaker hacks? JT's smart move was hooking up with Neptunes and Timba at the peak of their powers (more or less). He had an ambitious eye for quality. The Bieb seems to be all about product right now, which is the safe move. But he's also really stupid young.

(Though even my 7-year old and her friends make fun of him, so who knows what that portends)

i don't really understand j0rdan's Katy Perry contrast, unless he somehow things Stargate, Dr. Luke and Tricky Stewart are somehow more hacky/less auteur-like than Hitboy or Bei Major

i don't exactly think hit-boy and bei major are geniuses or something, but they're more auteur than stargate and dr. luke

Dr. Luke is a much stronger parallel to 2002 Neptunes than those dudes

i mean i don't necessarily agree w/ josh's premise entirely, but it's a mildly interesting and adventurous tracklist -- but i'd say the same for usher's new album, idk

how many major label albums can have a diplo production credit before that ceases to be shorthand for 'adventurous'

oh, i don't really give a shit about diplo, but his a&r people def stepped further out of the box than i would've expected.

i mean, look, it's not like 'justified' was that adventurous either, for the record -- working with tim and the neptunes wasn't exactly novel

you guys having worked out which the good tracks are on this album i am kind of listening to them all the time

it's kind of like a better usher album tbh

as long as you LUH-LUH-LUH-LUH-LUH-LUH-LOVE ME

idk, the album doesn't often rise above this minimal "just ok" level for me. it just kinda plods along with its competent-but-sorta-limp hooks, edm-y beats and diaphanous lyrics and doesn't hit much of a stride for the most part. and the title track is just embarrassing, i can't even put myself through it again.

(i love how mere seconds after i thought, "wow, his voice sounds unusually annoying here" during "right here" drake entered the track and instantly one-upped him in that regard.)

that said, i do like a number of the songs on this album -- "boyfriend", "thought of you" (which i would say does actually 'hit a stride'), "catching feelings" (which appropriately enough is one of the only tracks that actually captures a ~feeling~ for me, however uncomplicated), "as long as you love me"

i'm sure many people will like it (including people who never liked anything he did before) but i'm not even sure this is even negligibly better than his previous material

nicki minaj's verse is oddly beautiful to me despite the lol-worthy wiener/selena rhyme. love love love her delivery. JUSTIN - BIEBER!

"take you" and "catching feelings" are my other highlights, as well as the first 3 tracks which i already knew were all A+

they kinda leaked all the best songs early, also bonus tracks > over half the shit on the album

the first six or so songs are awesome... "catching feelings" is the one ballad that is almost borderline acceptable
