booth traums (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 25 May 2012 05:48 (fourteen years ago)

What are we missing? I can't see anything remarkable there.

only NWOFHM! is real (krakow), Friday, 25 May 2012 07:07 (fourteen years ago)

yeah the point is that at the price-point, sorta an all-time eBay snag

Stormy Davis, Friday, 25 May 2012 07:36 (fourteen years ago)

53 vs 6. unless the thing is totally trashed .. seller didn't say so!

Stormy Davis, Friday, 25 May 2012 07:38 (fourteen years ago)

I just got a sealed copy of Yellow Pills: Prefill for a reasonable price, woo!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 25 May 2012 11:18 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks Stormy! Yeah, seriously how did that complete at $6?

new Buttons stuff looks great. Unfortunately they only have the reissue of 004 in LP.

skip, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 03:30 (thirteen years ago)

how is "you can fly me on your aeroplane"?

i am very skeptical when i hear stuff called "psychedelic soul", it tends not to be much more than "soul w/ bloopy synths"

the late great, Wednesday, 25 July 2012 04:06 (thirteen years ago)

Haven't listened to that Wee reissue in a couple years at least--this track was/is one of my favourites on it:

(As you can hear, it can get somewhat Shuggie-y)

The inst. reprise of the title track is where there bloopy synths come in, btw--one of my fave moments on the record:

"Good God! Apocryphal Hymns" is amazing.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 29 July 2013 16:45 (twelve years ago)

yeah it is

the late great, Monday, 29 July 2013 18:56 (twelve years ago)

I really like the thread of Gospel groups integrating the latest Soul/R&B trends instead of just going secular - I'm sure this was something that must have been happening with actually-famous Gospel acts too at the time, don't really know all that much about the genre.

Or someone like Dwaine Vinyard, who came to it from a complete outsider perspective, the idea of Gospel being produced outside of its traditional community structures.

Also, man those keys on the Shelton Kilby track.

Good to hear! I ordered a copy for my gf's birthday but it's just sitting there in shrink wrap. Just like Roy Orbison. Mmmm

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 August 2013 17:58 (twelve years ago)

wow. so prince is allowing this? seems out of character.

tylerw, Thursday, 1 August 2013 18:22 (twelve years ago)

is purple snow going to actually contain any music by prince?

There shouldn't be a thread for Dennis Perrin tweets. (stevie), Thursday, 1 August 2013 23:05 (twelve years ago)

hey, odd question, has anyone on the board dealt with these dudes on the licensing side? I'm thinking from everything I've read that they might be a good option for my/my fathers long running tape collection project (i know ive talked to ned abt this and a few of the rest of you, but fuck it, no need to be coy anymore, I just want to get this stuff to see the light of day.)

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 August 2013 23:34 (twelve years ago)

Have not dealt with them but they do make mention on their site of going through months of licensing hell on a project

pfork article linked to says: "Purple Snow's 32 tracks include late 70s/early 80s projects from pre-solo stardom Prince"

tylerw, Friday, 2 August 2013 14:20 (twelve years ago)

i really want the iasos disc.

( (brimstead), Saturday, 3 August 2013 02:16 (twelve years ago)

looks like more than half of the tracks are previously unreleased?

( (brimstead), Saturday, 3 August 2013 02:18 (twelve years ago)

oh lol nevermind, looks like most of em were prev released.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 15:17 (twelve years ago)

Great review Ned. Can't wait to hear this!

sktsh, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 16:39 (twelve years ago)

Yeah excellent review...prolly my most anticipated album of the year...

The Pastiche Liberation Front (sonnyboy), Tuesday, 19 November 2013 18:40 (twelve years ago)

that sounds really amazing

brio, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 19:21 (twelve years ago)

Fits, starts, second tier work, sudden flashes but no more - Prince appears on a few tracks as a quietly competent side performer on organ or guitar, Jam and Lewis are woodshedding

Ah. Thanks Ned for the nice article

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 20 November 2013 15:28 (twelve years ago)

Yer welcome. And yeah, do NOT come to this expecting to hear unreleased full-on Prince demos or the like.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 November 2013 15:41 (twelve years ago)

that era of mpls funk is underrated. and it is slightly different to funk from elsewhere - those guys had more of a pop edge (not overt but its still there)

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 20 November 2013 16:10 (twelve years ago)

Even though I'm a massive P fan more in interested in hearing proto Jam and Lewis and other Minneapolis alumni...

The Pastiche Liberation Front (sonnyboy), Wednesday, 20 November 2013 16:32 (twelve years ago)

really sad i didn't renew my annual subscription to this label in 2013. if their yearly-fee is about the same next year ($100.00 or so), i'll start-up again.

Daniel, Esq 2, Thursday, 21 November 2013 02:27 (twelve years ago)

yeah i need to get back on the wagon, i forgot about my numero comps for a while and have gotten back into them and they're all so good.

Purple Snow is the first one I've pulled the trigger on buying and, oh my god, is it fantastic.

an enormous bolus of flatulence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 9 December 2013 04:15 (twelve years ago)

you gotta try . . .

  • 002: Antena: Camino Del Sol
  • 006: Cult Cargo: Belize City Boil Up
  • 007: Eccentric Soul: The Deep City Label
  • 021: !יאצללה: Soul Messages from Dimona
. . . among others.

Daniel, Esq 2, Monday, 9 December 2013 04:30 (twelve years ago)

I've heard some of them before, particularly liked the Deep City one you mention, but this is the first I've bought for myself.

an enormous bolus of flatulence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 9 December 2013 04:37 (twelve years ago)

yeah. this one, from the moovers and on the deep city disc, is jaw-droppingly good.

Ha ha ...the D & D demographic

curmudgeon, Monday, 24 February 2014 15:48 (twelve years ago)

They're out there. Kinda. A review of this will be running in the Quietus soon. The compilation's a bit of bait and switch in that it's more shared 70s epic fantasy/Tolkien reading etc. rather than specifically a D&D thing but I see the logic of it.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 February 2014 15:53 (twelve years ago)

some of this medusa album, which is apparently a big part of the new numero disc compilation, is really good!
