Sometimes I think because America is so vast people find it it easier to reinvent themselves whereas England is a class conscious society that is only a small island. Its harder to escape your class in this country. I think that does have an affect on artistes. Thats why we have folk like Gilbert & George and you had guys had Jeff Koons. Yeah I know it is a crude generalisation and is off topic, but I am sure I am making a point here.
