Girl Talk was one of the first things my girlfriend and I got into together. She listens to it at the gym.

Same thing with me any my wife. She adores Girl Talk.

New album leak is a fake!

Yesterday, someone posted a fake "leak" of my upcoming album. I was not involved in this at all. The music posted had nothing to do with me. Please spread the word that the leak was fake.

Thanks

Gregg

OK, I heard this album. It's definitely more mashuppy than Night Ripper, which is a drag.

If Night Ripper was like dance Negativland, then this is just an OK version of Radio Soulwax or Z-Trip/DJ P Uneasy Listening.

I love the Kelly Clarkson/NIN bit.. I also like that he introduces me to random weird shit I never would have listened to independantly, like "I'm A Flirt"

I'd copy and paste that to another thread if this was old nu-ilx.

I like Girl Talk's last disc, but I half-expected that -- by now -- his formula (old-school rock or pop or funk sample + nu-school hip-hop sample) would be tedious/no longer memorable. But, so far, it's still a thrill for me to hear the old and new stuff mashed together. Go figure.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 28 July 2008 14:05 (seventeen years ago)

I'm... sorry? that I don't listen to R Kelly without Gillis' prompting. Here are some extra bits of punctuation for the next thing I say which you find funny: '''''''''

Finefinemusic, Monday, 28 July 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

i think deejs point is that a top 40 song by one of the biggest r&b singers of the last 15 years is neither "random" nor "weird"

max, Monday, 28 July 2008 14:45 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, but you can avoid that stuff easily: I don't listen to radio other than the CBC! To me, hearing R. Kelly is very random and weird. I think hearing a guy accused of peeing on 15 year olds sing "I'm a flirt" should be weird to even the most jaded individual :)

Finefinemusic, Monday, 28 July 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

I listen to Top 40 radio fairly regularly, but I only heard "I'm a Flirt" a handful of times. Which is to say, I don't think it was nearly as big as its popularity among Internet critics and fans might've made it seem. (PS I prefer the Hood Internet's mash-up of "I'm a Flirt" with Broken Social Scene's "7/4 Shoreline.")

I'll check it out, Jaymc - I really liked their mashup of Amerie's Take Control of Me & Da Funk. Thanks!

Finefinemusic, Monday, 28 July 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

My personal problem with the Girl Talk albums is that I can't pinpoint a good beat that I enjoy. I disagree with people above that his M.O. is sample-spotting or taste-pandering. I actually find it comforting that most people on here AND critics are willing to enjoy his Top 40 samples. However, I just kind of seem to hear a beat underneath a bunch of samples. I say "personal" because I can see how someone can disagree with me, but I think it comes down to subjective taste. He's good at what he does, and he puts on a helluva party, but when listening to the album on my own I don't enjoy many of the songs. Some of his songs are really great (that Grizzly Bear/Clipse one last year was killer), but I seem to hear the same structure on most of his songs. Generic beat + one sample he kind of sticks with for most of the song + more samples thrown in. This is due to personal preference, though, and not disagreement with the concepts behind his songs/mashups/compositions/whatever like a lot of the people do above. I wish I liked his stuff more, and I like his taste, but I'm never really drawn in to like it a lot. The reason I'm kind of addicted to the Hood Internet mashups (at least the better ones) is precisely their beat selection and the fact they match songs really well as far pitch or flow. Maybe I'm being stubborn or way too influenced by Hood Internet and traditional mashups, but I prefer a fleshed-out beat all the way through.

i would be bummed if he got sued even tho i hate this music

billstevejim, Monday, 28 July 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I'm also wondering how he hasn't gotten sued, especially since the RIAA has sued families and children in the past for downloading and snitched on DJ Drama (who was, um, helping their artists sell and make a name for themselves). I'm guessing they think it's a booby trap.
