Tell tell tell!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Positive I linked to this on another BP-related thread. I describe each of the four tracks in the 03.06.03 entry -- you have to scroll down quite a bit to get to it.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting you should point out the lack of bass guitar, as Sutton produced and played bass on Coldharbourstores' debut album, which is conspicuously lacking in bottom-end.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

all i gotta say about this is fuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

i miss john ling though. *crying over loss of dub*

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Good lord, that took forever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

ah ..but not as long as MBV or The Blue Nile, Ned !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

LEE HARRIS??

Like, THE Lee Harris??? Of Talk Talk???

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, yeah. That's not that surprising.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

This is all true and good! I emailed Graham again the other re; a potential interview for Stylus, and he said March 2004 on Fire. It is Lee Harris and from the tracks I've heard it's going to be very good.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, HELLO?? This is a Bark Psychosis album! Just "very good"? This will not do...

Hmmm... March 2004. So, I should expect to hear it around February or so?? heh heh heh.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I've only heard 4 tracks, the rest of course could be rubbish... But I doubt it.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 30 October 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

was told by someone who heard the whole thing and is a big fan that they "didn't think much of it"... alas!

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 30 October 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

is it a bark psychosis record or a bark psychosis/boymerang record? are the two entirely separate? is boymerang over?

keith (keithmcl), Friday, 31 October 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It's definitely a Bark Psychosis record -- and a damn good one at that.

Andy K (Andy K), Friday, 31 October 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

okay that makes me feel better, I'm not sure what her problem was with it then. the boymerang stuff didn't do much for me and I was afraid it would sound like that.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 31 October 2003 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, ILM seems to be bringing up many of my favorite records/bands tonight -- Labradford, Disco Inferno, and now Bark Psychosis. I'd have to agree that the early singles/eps were fantastic (Independency has many of them) but Hex is where it's at. The whole album is brill. From what I heard of Codename: Dustsucker, it's not entirely awful. Some the early criticism of it seems a little, I dunno, lukewarm. I can see how some people would be disappointed in it though. It's been so long since they released a record, almost anything they put out is bound to disappoint some fans after what is it 5-6 years now?

Fake Edit: I remember some kind of ep or comp. being released after Hex, so it may have not have been all that long since Bark Psychosis put out something. But I may be wrong about that.

Luis, Friday, 31 October 2003 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, Hex is now 9 years old, Independency (EP compilation) is also 9 years old, Game Over (patchy odds & sods comp.) is 6 years old. The last 'new' material BP released was the "Blue" single, and that was at the tale-end of 1994 as well. Even Boymerang was 1997. It's been a looooooooooooooooooong time comin'.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 31 October 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahh you are correct, Nick. AMG tells me Hex was released in 94. I was under the impression it came out around 96-97ish (That will teach me to rely on vague memory at 3am). Only I could have sworn the Independency disc came out beforehand, I specifically remember having Independency and a handful of the eps(Mannan, Blue...?) on tapes long before Hex. Of course I probably have the whole time line screwed up a bit since I didn't properly get into BP till 1996(ish). In any case it has been a long wait for a new BP record. Glad they are back, even if I have to wait till March for an actual copy. Wonder if it's "done" or if they will change anything from what's been leaked...

Luis, Friday, 31 October 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

So it looks like 3rd Stone are poised to release the new live & rare compilation of BP, entitled Replay. Here's the advance notice from Artist Shop distro (still no full version of "Blue" in sight, sigh):

Bark Psychosis were one of the leading innovators of rock during their
active period of 1988 to 1994. Their music, while almost traditional rock is better described as post rock. Their use of samples to create textural soundscapes brings a whole new sound to the genre. Post rock was speared-headed by Bark Psychosis when the genre was staid and unchanging, one of Bark Psychosis innovations is the use of volume, not too exciting you might think but as the barrage of guitars gives way to the soft vocals and synthesizers you’ll notice the dynamics that infuse their work. The artwork feature photographs of the St Johns Church where this live recording was made back in 1991, the situation perfectly reflecting the style of Bark Psychosis and their unique sound is enhanced by the acoustics. Starring alongside the 5 live tracks are some very special moments in the history of Bark Psychosis. Re-mastered versions of Reserve Shotgunman and Hex make
their first appearance since their release as b-sides and are joined by an ultra-rare track that all good Psychosis fans will have heard of - Clawhammer. Originally released in 1988 alongside an extract from Spacemen 3 Dreamweapon, this flexi-disc remains a collectors item for both Bark Psychosis fans and Spacemen 3 devotee's alike. Also featured is a remix of Big Shot.

Doug Watson (solid air), Thursday, 13 November 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: the "full" version of "Blue".

The CD single does say 'edit' on it, and as I bought that first on the day of release I thought "Great song, I wonder if the full version is any bigger and better?" So I went off and bought the 12 inch (on white vinyl) a day or so later and do know how much difference there is? Hardly any. There's about 20 or 30 seconds of music at the start, very much like the coda of the song, then the song proper starts, and it ends just like the CD version. So really, you're not missing much.

What are the live tracks on "Replay" then? I presume "Pendulum man" from "Game over" is there?

Rob M (Rob M), Thursday, 13 November 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Is "Hex" really any good? I got it years ago played it a few times and found it to be totally in-one-ear-and-out-the-other and now here I am many years hence being told what a work of genius it is. Should I seek it out again or am I in for a "World of Echo"/ AR Kane "yep, it's every bit as dull as I remember despite what people say" type scenario?!?!???

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 November 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Depends how much you like "Spirit of Eden" era Talk Talk really! If you do, then you'll like "Hex".

Have you got "World of Echo" then, as I've been after a copy of that for years...

Rob M (Rob M), Thursday, 13 November 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Depends how much you like "Spirit of Eden" era Talk Talk really! If you do, then you'll like "Hex".

I do like "Spirit of Eden", "Hex" never made enough impression on me to ever play it more than a couple of times

Have you got "World of Echo" then, as I've been after a copy of that for years...

Yes I have a copy. No I cannot for the life of me work out why people go on about it so much - I blame Simon Reynolds.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 November 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Was that advance notice written by someone who's first langauge isn't English? It's horrendous.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 13 November 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not so into Hex either, but the stuff before it was really amazing.

So an 8-track version of Dustsucker is available on SLSK, but is it actually the real deal? Aside from the four tracks (Miss Abuse, Inqb8r, Burning The City, 400 Winters) that have been around on the net for a while, the other four (which i've not downloaded yet) are all old titles - Tooled Up, Lazarus (Boymerang title), Bigshot remix, Reserve Shot Gunman. What's the deal? I can't fathom Graham spending ten years only to come up with four new tracks and a load of rare stuff stuck together? Has anyone got any information about this? Andy K? I've just emailed the PR about a review copy so I'll see what she says.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 2 January 2004 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's been a group release for about a month, and they don't mess around.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 3 January 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

that 8-track version can't be the real deal. aside from the old BP stuff on it, the first track is actually boymerang. also, fire records have put up mp3s of two tracks not on it: "rose" and "shapeshifting."

Official site says release date is "July 2004".

bleuaswell, Monday, 19 April 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. Graham wasn't happy with the mastering so took it back and did it again. His PR lady (who is a very nice American woman) assures me review copies will be out soon. There's gonna be a limited 7" in June and the album in July, hopefully.

coco, Tuesday, 1 June 2004 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

July 26th/27th is the release date. My promo arrived this morning, and I've had it on all day, basically. This is a very, very good record. It may even be better than Hex. I'll spend a couple more days with it and then get back to the PR and re-schedule the interview I've been planning with Graham for the last 8 months!

PS it looks like this;

Various versions of songs (and even the whole album, almost) have been floating around SLSK for ages - Graham put them on there himself to see what happened!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

some of them were boymerang tracks. ew.

Random Monday night thought: did "In The Light of Time" get much coverage and/or prompt any interesting writing/interviews?

djh, Monday, 13 November 2023 23:24 (two years ago)

Nothing seen on any of the stops that I frequented since it was released. Maybe it's not yet the right moment for a UK post-rock / lost generation resurgence? Despite the stupidly accelerated culture in the West, some music just needs time to get properly lost before it can be rediscovered.

Just checked and yeah, it's been less than 15 years since Biggie Samuels did those excellent "Post-Rocktoberfest" compilations on his Bubblegumcage blog.

sawdust lagoon, Tuesday, 14 November 2023 19:46 (two years ago)

somewhat tangential but … the distance between the quality of the music and quality of album title with “code name: dustsucker” remains astonishing
