so psyched!

tylerw, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 14:53 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, high hopes for this. Gonna listen to "Waswasa" right now. Sure hope the Howlin' Rain ethos is not too present.

grandavis, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 16:32 (fourteen years ago)

ilxor, Sunday, 20 May 2012 04:50 (fourteen years ago)

!

Stoked. New Rangda and new Six Organs this year? Combine that with the Blues Control record and I think it may be a Drag City kind of fall.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 27 July 2012 02:19 (thirteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

combo of the new one and the new rangda is basically psych guitar heaven.

tylerw, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:12 (thirteen years ago)

getting a sabbath meets neil young vibe from Ascent

tylerw, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

Check this out, pretty funny

Trip Maker, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:18 (thirteen years ago)

are these the same recordings as the 'electric six organs' thing that (i think?) was linked up thread? if so, i can't wait to hear more!!!
8/21 here i come

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 13 August 2012 17:51 (thirteen years ago)

at least a few of the same song titles -- 1000 Birds and Even if You Knew? Right? Maybe that was on the Rangda thread.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 13 August 2012 17:53 (thirteen years ago)

these are new recordings -- those electric six organs things were from way back, 2004-ish? but there is some crossover w/ songs from those sessions.

tylerw, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

oh ok that's good news! those recordings kinda suck and i keep wanting them to be LOUDER

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Monday, 13 August 2012 17:58 (thirteen years ago)

yes, these are more hi-fi!

tylerw, Monday, 13 August 2012 17:59 (thirteen years ago)

I was surprised when I noticed that Thurston Moore's new band Chelsea LIght Moving consisted of the 2 guys who made up the 3 piece electric 6 Organs that toured in 2006 plus the violinist who'd toured with the acoustic TM band.
I liked that electric 6OoA and hoped i'd get hold of more than the Chapel Hill set that circulated.

But great that the new 6OoA is a renamed Comets of Fire on record at least.

Stevolende, Monday, 13 August 2012 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

Think Thurston kinda poached the band, though not in a dickish way.

grandavis, Monday, 13 August 2012 20:01 (thirteen years ago)

There was about a 5 year gap anyway wasn't there. Think Chasny was playing with his fiancee for a couple of years.
& Maloney was more of a Sunburneder wasn't he? Though he'd apparently moved to Leeds UK by 2006.
Haven't heard much on the Sunburned front recently are they still active?

& Keith Wood's been doing several things in the interim hasn't he?

Stevolende, Tuesday, 14 August 2012 12:34 (thirteen years ago)

I listened to those electric Six Organs tracks last night and I forgot how much 1000 Birds sounds like Cowgirl in the Sand -- it's mostly just the opening part, but the similarity is unmistakeable.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Tuesday, 14 August 2012 13:06 (thirteen years ago)

can't stop playing the new one! the accompanying seven-inch is ace too!

tylerw, Thursday, 23 August 2012 22:20 (thirteen years ago)

i got it but it's sitting here in my bag til i get home from a work meeting! i wonder if mine came with a 7"?! the only sticker on the outside informs me that i should play it loudly.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Thursday, 23 August 2012 22:30 (thirteen years ago)

Is the 7" more songs with the full band?

grandavis, Thursday, 23 August 2012 22:31 (thirteen years ago)

yes -- 2 instrumentals
xp oh i don't think it's actually included w/ the LP -- just meant "accompanying" as in "from the same sessions."

tylerw, Thursday, 23 August 2012 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

Ahh, good to know on both fronts. Thanks.

grandavis, Thursday, 23 August 2012 22:38 (thirteen years ago)

ok this thousand birds sounds a lot different than the other one! it's a lot tighter, a little faster, and the beginning doesn't sound like "cowgirl in the sand" at all. i still like it though!
was disappointed that there were no downloads
i thought drag city did that?

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Friday, 24 August 2012 03:39 (thirteen years ago)

Nah, they don't at all. Pretty frustrating. I think I need to put a Drag City order together.
My birthday is coming up!

Trip Maker, Friday, 24 August 2012 04:24 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, seems like they don't do the "download coupon with vinyl" thing just to be ornery.

tylerw, Friday, 24 August 2012 14:41 (thirteen years ago)

it is frustrating, esp since i have been purchasing their wares for like 20 years. maybe they should get a lifetime loyal customer download card or something. on the other hand, birthdays make a good excuse for purchases of all kinds :)

anyway i listened to this last night and it's great. the little dot matrix printer paper insert/lyric sheet thing is kinda lol.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Friday, 24 August 2012 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

jamming "One Thousand Birds" on my radio show right now, fresh out of the shrinkwrap

sleeve, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 00:09 (thirteen years ago)

I agree that this is good. Playing with Bishop seems like it is having some influence.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 00:27 (thirteen years ago)

This new album is jam-tastic, "Waswasa" might be the best thing I've heard this year! It's like Chasny all of a sudden configured a band and sound that was designed specifically to ROCK OUT. The guitar tone is so good! Just a really nice surprise after being lukewarm on the last few records. If any of you have also tuned out over the last few years, this is very different and very worthwhile.

sleeve, Thursday, 13 September 2012 23:41 (thirteen years ago)

Coming to Chicago in December. He's touring with the band, right?! If so, I'm totally there because there will be jamz.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Friday, 14 September 2012 01:12 (thirteen years ago)

Isn't most of the band playing w Ben on this record the dudes he played with in comets on fire? i liked comets on fire.

one dis leads to another (ian), Friday, 14 September 2012 15:08 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i think it's basically comets on fire?
colossal yes is opening a few shows on the west coast (comets on fire drummer solo project) which is pretty cool. kind of different than what you'd expect, but good! also, just found out an old buddy of mine plays bass on their latest record.

tylerw, Friday, 14 September 2012 15:13 (thirteen years ago)

pretty great live set from this month's hopscotch fest - http://www.nyctaper.com/2012/09/six-organs-of-admittance-september-6-2012-hopscotch-festival-berkeley-cafe-raleigh-nc-flacmp3streaming/
solo acoustic except fro last track w/ corsano.

tylerw, Wednesday, 19 September 2012 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

Side 2 of this is killing it.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 20 September 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

playing tonight, not sure if i'll go

the late great, Thursday, 20 September 2012 23:57 (thirteen years ago)

Just heard teh cd for the first time and I don't think it needs any ibnstruction to play loud cos I think it has a built in urge to do so dunnit?
Pretty great anyway, hoping some live sets of this turn up with rocking band. Plus it seeds a desire for the Comets to reunite. Though would also like to see Howlin Rain continue.

Stevolende, Friday, 21 September 2012 13:36 (thirteen years ago)

i haven't seen a meltdown of that magnitude since the last earthless show! it pretty much was a CoF show

missed colossal yes and jeans wilder, bummer :-(

the late great, Friday, 21 September 2012 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

It's kind of funny that my favorite track on this "crazy rockin" six organs record is this mellow slow burner
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_8wqb6GZzc

Trip Maker, Friday, 21 September 2012 19:47 (thirteen years ago)

there were some EARTH type jams (as opposed to EARTHLESS type jams) of the slow spaghetti western variety that i really enjoyed

the late great, Friday, 21 September 2012 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

Whoa yeah, this song rules! Sounds kinda like some of the last Polvo record, "In Prism", too. Lots of sweet spots for me there, more interesting to me than the rockers I have heard so far, though I like those too.

grandavis, Friday, 21 September 2012 19:59 (thirteen years ago)

the show at the echo was monstrous.

sriracha bishop (get bent), Saturday, 22 September 2012 07:38 (thirteen years ago)

Just heard Rangda today, must try to make that a habit since they sound pretty fine.
Nice interplay between Chasny, Sir Richard bishop and Chris Corsano.
Found a live set from earlier this year on Dime too. Sounds pretty good.

Ascent has been reminding me of 90s/00s Neil Young/Crazy Horse at its heaviest jamming guitarwise on further listens. Though guitar is even more extreme is it Chadbournesque or what is it at its most overdriven? Certainly reminds me of somebody else.

Stevolende, Thursday, 27 September 2012 20:22 (thirteen years ago)

'ascent' is a amazing imo

totes excited about chicago show in december

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:05 (thirteen years ago)

God that last song - so, like, White Heaven or something (in a very, very good way) - love this whole album (and I say that as a guy who prefers spacy pensive Chasny to blistering shredding Chasny) but this last track is like whoa

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Thursday, 4 October 2012 01:04 (thirteen years ago)
