New Beach Boys album - That's Why God Made the Radio

i don't watch or listen to modern day beach boys unless uncle jesse and the rest of the full house cast is involved

the harmonies and melody lines in the chorus are really beautiful

but yeah sounds cheaply recorded and the lyrics are terrible

the bridge is horrible

Not that I have been expecting otherwise, but all of the reviews of the current tour have basically been reviews of "The Beach Boys," rather than this Beach Boys. Surely no one has ever doubted the merits of the group's catalog, but it is weird to read these pieces that neither compare the current tour to the band's umpteenth past tours sans Brian, or note how the return of Brian does or does not change a thing about the group as its been for years. I mean, the current Beach Boys uses Brian's band - does that make a difference? I'm sure they sang Brian songs without him - does it matter that he's there? It's all sort of a disingenuous approach to a group that's been ignored, critically, on the nostalgia circuit for decades.

Mike's drug of choice was apple juice iirc

In the semi-controversial "Mike Love isn't so bad" piece that ran in Mojo sometime back, Mike admitted he "smoked his share of marijuana" in the 60s, but quit once he discovered meditation.

I thought I remembered Mike bragging about having better acid trips than Brian ever did during his famous RnRHoF induction-rant

I just came from the Beach Boys concert at the Beacon theater. I can't speak for Mike Love's drug intake, but as of 2012, the man certainly has his share of psychedelic hand motions.

This could very well turn out to be the best Beach Boys album in 35 years

I just came from the Beach Boys concert at the Beacon theater.

so was it any good? I can't bring myself to go really, after seeing the setlist which was 50% uninvolving for me....and the feeling that going would be like going to see wax figures. but i'm kind of curious.

They're playing here the night of the NATO protests/meeting. It's also across the street from one of the "look at me, I'm behind the anchors on the sidewalk!" news stations. Should be a mess.

opening with Do It Again is pretty cool, I gotta say

i mean those setlists are great. amazing they're not even doing a few more smile tracks though, considering the press that box got last year.
guess there's some groovy wilson bros. beyond the grave duets happening on "forever" and "god only knows"? heavy.

tbf, "Forever" is sung by a hologram John Stamos.
