i remember buying my first Velvet Underground comp because they were so progressive and influential on alternative music and everything that wasn't a boring german ballad was pretty basic competant rock n roll.

Btw, I agree that Blackmore and Roth are good antecedents. What about Steve Hackett? He was doing some two-hand tapping early on. I could see the lead parts in "The Musical Box" as an antecedent to Iron Maiden in a way.

I can't offhand think of any theoretical writing that's really specifically about 80s hard rock but these guys have written about metal or prog:

Pieslak's Meshuggah article is pretty good.

just fire the web designers and get some bloggers to do it for free. this IS 2012 after all.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 14:51 (fourteen years ago)

i actually know two amazing web designers by the way. one of whom is an ilxor if spin needs some help. cuz that site has always been a nightmare.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

ha ca you imagine if whiney had the spin site redesigned to look like ilx

some dude, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

its right up there with movie company websites (almost always horrible and straight out of 1992) and big label music company websites (ditto). media people strangely have a hard time with the whole website thing. which is kinda ironic, dontcha think?

Old Spin! What a fantastic magazine it was.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 15:43 (fourteen years ago)

picturing people in business casual walking by spottie's desk, looking down and screaming "GROVE STREEEEEEEEEET" or "WAKA! FLOCKA! WAKA! FLOCKA!"

some dude, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 15:44 (fourteen years ago)

lol. All I've gotten so far is a couple "cool, who is that" comments.

works for your computer too. you just need to find single page sites for long form.

Readability is an app that strips extraneous shit from web pages.

I like using the Reader button in the Safari app for this purpose.

one month passes...

hey whiney i've been listening to stuff off the spin best albums of 2012 so far thing, some good tunes maaan

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 18 June 2012 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

tried reading that & just got caught on a loop of action bronson -> addison groove -> action bronson -> addison groove

carly rae (flopson), Monday, 18 June 2012 20:35 (thirteen years ago)

that was a damn fine list, i thought. would've liked to see just a little more mea culpa from whiney on twitter for doing a "so far" thing, though. dude gave a LOT of people/places shit for that last year.

alpine static, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:21 (thirteen years ago)

being whiney means never having to say you're sorry

a dense custard of infinity (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 18 June 2012 21:22 (thirteen years ago)

when whiney does the exact same thing he criticized others for its totally different remember! And will prove it with a month long poll.

it looks like something rupert the bear would wear (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 18 June 2012 21:26 (thirteen years ago)

well w/e it hipped me to some new music

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 18 June 2012 21:27 (thirteen years ago)

he must be held accountable!
but srsly, i am having a weird desire to subscribe to spin. last ish i got was in 1996! should i do this!?

tylerw, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

dude go for it, subway ain't free

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 18 June 2012 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

i don't care how whiney gets to work

tylerw, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:40 (thirteen years ago)

no, don't get me wrong, like i said i dug the list. and it led me to some stuff, too. and it's not like i'm staying up nights angry because whiney didn't beg forgiveness.

i just think slagging everyone else left and right essentially for tacking "...so far" onto their lists and then 12 months later doing the xact same thing (w/ the ellipsis, even!) without poking some significant fun at yourself is not a great look. but whatever. the rules are different for different folks, i get that.

alpine static, Monday, 18 June 2012 21:41 (thirteen years ago)

i totally just subscribed to spin! do not disappoint me, magazine!

this will happen.
