i'm so far 12/20
Me too. And I expect at least 5 of the remaining ones to show in the top 10. (Though I am a little amazed that all of the big Some Great Reward singles have already placed. Just my age, I guess, but those are so foundational to my idea of Depeche Mode.)

I'm 8/20. "I Feel You" is so bad-ass.

My no.1
― Ismael Klata, Saturday, 5 May 2012 16:28 (fourteen years ago)
So happy to see Home make it. I gave it my number one vote. As I said in the other thread, the combination of those beautiful strings and the incredible vocal gets me everytime. Really happy to see Lie to me place so high too, great song.
See You is the only song in the list so far that I really just don't like at all. I've always hated how lazy the chorus sounds, it's the same problem I have with The Meaning of Love.
― Kitchen Person, Saturday, 5 May 2012 16:29 (fourteen years ago)
Walking In My Shoes is a classic piece of songwriting, terrific to bellow out passionately. I really like the long ebowed coda too. It reminds me of another tune from the era, Suede's 'Europe Is Our Playground', which ends on a similar guitar figure. Any other songs like this, structurally?

oh, and there was 1 #1 vote for Just Can't Get Enough.

ehh it's a nice enough pop ditty
― Touché Gödel (ledge), Saturday, 5 May 2012 16:57 (fourteen years ago)
probably not (ask me again when i see what's to come) though i am surprised at zero #1 votes, it is a perfect little thing. clarke did better things later but (despite many attempts) he never quite managed another bauble that equaled this one.

"Strangelove" is probably the best DM music video.
― crüt, Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:07 (fourteen years ago)
"Strangelove" is also totally badass, it's one of my new favorite songs to sing
― I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:09 (fourteen years ago)
that song seemed so brazen in 87

― balls, Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:17 (fourteen years ago)
girls thought they were being "pervy" by singing the lyrics.
This period had no trouble crossing over to Miami radio stations because deejays knew how fabulous Company B sounded next to "Strangelove."
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:18 (fourteen years ago)
"Breathing In Fumes" was the first Depeche Mode song I heard that wasn't on Some Great Reward; when I got 101 I recognized its elements in "Stripped" immediately and that's been one of my favorite DM songs ever since. It was #2 on my ballot.
― I'M THAT POSTA, AAAAAAAAAH (DJP), Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:25 (fourteen years ago)
I'd've'd Strangelove really high if I'd given it a few more days - terrific vocal.
― Ismael Klata, Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:26 (fourteen years ago)
whoa ultimate radio station
― Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:27 (fourteen years ago)
seriously that swankass sleazy hook (probably the closest depeche mode come to jam-lewis right?), the casual kinkiness of the lyrics, that vague air of doom. i was 13 when 'strangelove' hit (and it hit BIG on mtv) and it felt mysteriously dirty and vulgar in a way that unnerved me; i listened to ALOT of 2 live crew and as vulgar as they were they also basically allowed me to think that at 13 via playground scuttlebutt, 80s teen comedies, and stolen playboys and penthouses i had a fairly good grip so to speak on sex. 'strangelove' hinted that i didn't know ANYTHING.
― balls, Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:27 (fourteen years ago)
I have this very deep desire for a Señor Coconut-tyle album of DM covers, esp. Strangelove, which I think would sound fabulous on a marimba.
― Dale, dale, dale (Abbbottt), Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:29 (fourteen years ago)
strangelove is really about relationships, not sex
― crüt, Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:29 (fourteen years ago)

lol
― crüt, Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:30 (fourteen years ago)
no, I guess that came out wrong. there's definitely sex there, written purposefully in away so that the song can be interpreted in a sexual way, but it's really about being mean to a loved one and awaiting the pain that will be returned

oh yeah there's a sweetness and, um, emotional depth there that's not present in something like say 'sex dwarf' (waiting to have someone correct me by telling me that 'sex dwarf' despite its title has basically the same theme as 'the living years'). no way i was hearing that in 1987.
― balls, Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:36 (fourteen years ago)
yay my fave violator single though nay half the top six composed of violator singles
'World in My Eyes' kind of sneaks up on you with how good it is.

Often, the first track on an album loses its appeal just because you hear it so many time. Not in this case.

"Everything Counts" might be the most consistently overrated DM single, although that doesn't mean it still isn't great.
