its funny because i remember from my spin reading youth when they used to like to include public enemy or whoever under the heading of 'rock' and now look theyre still doing it, its a spin tradition

jam master jay at ten is way stranger than skrillex because if you dont play guitar you should totally be confined to the bottom third IMHO

in all seriousness tho its a sweet alt list and there are tons of doods i love on there, its cool to do something a lil diff that doesnt quite make sense

Judging from the last issue and also the jpg of that guitarist thing SPIN seems to be moving towards infographics that *look* cool but are somewhat confusing and hard to actually read, which seems to defeat the purpose of an infographic.

ppl say this a lot but it doesn't feel all that true to me. i'm more shocked at how LITTLE of a generation gap there is anymore...i work with a lot of ppl younger than me in their 20s and a lot of them way more into classic rock and metal and other stuff, and more critical of newer stuff than i am

and just the popularity of like mainstream indie now....

as far as younger kids i meet in bands they seem to be super into older stuff, almost the same canon i grew up on...

i dunno it's weird...i'm 37 and i was having a conversation with a bar seeing some bands with someone who was 27 and also someone who was 46, 20 year gap and we all pretty much liked the same stuff

honestly i'm just glad to have a celebration of the gen-x indie guitar rock aesthetic written by whiney.

We don't worship "guitar gods," but prefer our axe-wielders to be resourceful, egalitarian, flawed, and human.

well i meant more guitarists that 20somethings listen to MORE than 30somethings and 40somethings. lots of young people still listen to Nirvana and Sabbath, but not necessarily more than the olds did or do.

no i agree obv hip hop and newer guitarists like skrillex mean this gen is like um less rockist and stuff, but i guess i'm always surprised by how much that stuff endures! just like david bowie is still cool or whatever, and he was old tyme stuff for me, much less kids today

Yeah, it's kinda weird for me too. When I was a kid, like 1950s stuff wasn't very cool - Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly. Don't know if it is now or not. And so my gut expectation would be for today's youth to dismiss Led Zeppelin or something in a similar way, I guess. But that's not really how it works out.

Obviously Skrillex at 100 is some "informed trolling" but there is a point to it I suppose. If you're looking to include a token person using "guitar textures" to make interesting music Fennesz is a much more defensible inclusion. Other notable exclusions at first blush (in rough order of WTF-ness): Dean Warhem, Loren Connors, Michio Kurihara, Richard Bishop, Jeff Parker, Jack Rose, Ben Chasny, Keith Rowe. Would be very interested to hear how the selection process went down.

i don't think it really matters in the end. who was included. as i said earlier on this thread, A+ job by whiney to make people think about Spin in 2012. that's the important thing.

No STEVE LUKATHER??? The people at Spin are Spun. That list is worthless and is an offense to any good guitar player that really understands what it takes to be a master of the instrument. I'm surprised that list doesn't include Tiny Tim and Don Ho.
