And shouldn't the Disaster Area guy be here also? They're a thousand times more doom, sludge, etc. than the pikers on this list. Plus they're in the future!

24 Steve Albini (Big Black/Shellac) SOMEONE FORGOT RAPEMAN, p cool list otherwise tho

lag∞n, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:07 (fourteen years ago)

is this list in any order

lag∞n, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:09 (fourteen years ago)

the numbers are 'points,' so skrillex has 100 points, sonic youth dudes have 1 point

some dude, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:17 (fourteen years ago)

so unfair, but i guess maybe if they had more bass drops or w/e

lag∞n, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:32 (fourteen years ago)

its funny because i remember from my spin reading youth when they used to like to include public enemy or whoever under the heading of 'rock' and now look theyre still doing it, its a spin tradition

lag∞n, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:37 (fourteen years ago)

jam master jay at ten is way stranger than skrillex because if you dont play guitar you should totally be confined to the bottom third IMHO

lag∞n, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:38 (fourteen years ago)

in all seriousness tho its a sweet alt list and there are tons of doods i love on there, its cool to do something a lil diff that doesnt quite make sense

lag∞n, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:45 (fourteen years ago)

it probably doesn't work as well online but the David Marchese infographic comparing a bunch of guitarists that's in the actual issue is so much cooler than the list: http://www.greatkat.com/59/articles/spinmagazine.html

some dude, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:50 (fourteen years ago)

if youre not gonna put son house or jimmy page on the list then for christ's sakes don't put jack white on it.

^^^

Elmore James too, Guitar Slim, or if you simply have to have the "but he combined all their styles and brought nothing of his own to the table/he's basically our kinda people!" quality at least go with Greg Cartwright

For all the posturing about "the kids," the SPIN list is really for people in their 40s.

#2 Kevin Shields: Didn't know writing boring pentatonic metalcore riffs based off of Maiden tunes would get you on any list anywhere.

okay this gave me a much-needed lol

the list of guitarists that people in their 20s listen to is pretty short, though

some dude, Friday, 4 May 2012 11:40 (fourteen years ago)

Should have thrown Nathan Chapman in there.

that list is kinda cool. but yeah jack white is right up there with corgan for me as far as people who make me want to blow my brains out. and what whiney said about jeff beck is how i feel about j mascis. unless j is drumming in deep wound. then i love him. better trolling would have left out fahey and basho. and included whatsherface from the shaggs and the banjo player for the monks.

scott seward, Friday, 4 May 2012 13:59 (fourteen years ago)

if spin realllly wanted to troll, the end of this list should have been
1. YOU

tylerw, Friday, 4 May 2012 15:15 (fourteen years ago)

honestly what would have been the best is if you would have done a total whiney list like how you did...all "oh the dude from boredoms"...."doug martsch"...."kelly clarkson"...."rahzel from the roots".... all up to number one then pull a bait and switch and be all

Number 1:

scott seward, Friday, 4 May 2012 15:16 (fourteen years ago)

Judging from the last issue and also the jpg of that guitarist thing SPIN seems to be moving towards infographics that *look* cool but are somewhat confusing and hard to actually read, which seems to defeat the purpose of an infographic.

ppl say this a lot but it doesn't feel all that true to me. i'm more shocked at how LITTLE of a generation gap there is anymore...i work with a lot of ppl younger than me in their 20s and a lot of them way more into classic rock and metal and other stuff, and more critical of newer stuff than i am

and just the popularity of like mainstream indie now....

as far as younger kids i meet in bands they seem to be super into older stuff, almost the same canon i grew up on...

i dunno it's weird...i'm 37 and i was having a conversation with a bar seeing some bands with someone who was 27 and also someone who was 46, 20 year gap and we all pretty much liked the same stuff

l0u1s j0rdan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 4 May 2012 15:35 (fourteen years ago)

honestly i'm just glad to have a celebration of the gen-x indie guitar rock aesthetic written by whiney.

We don't worship "guitar gods," but prefer our axe-wielders to be resourceful, egalitarian, flawed, and human.

da croupier, Friday, 4 May 2012 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

well i meant more guitarists that 20somethings listen to MORE than 30somethings and 40somethings. lots of young people still listen to Nirvana and Sabbath, but not necessarily more than the olds did or do.

some dude, Friday, 4 May 2012 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

no i agree obv hip hop and newer guitarists like skrillex mean this gen is like um less rockist and stuff, but i guess i'm always surprised by how much that stuff endures! just like david bowie is still cool or whatever, and he was old tyme stuff for me, much less kids today

l0u1s j0rdan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 4 May 2012 15:44 (fourteen years ago)

david bowie really should've had a challop entry on the list

some dude, Friday, 4 May 2012 15:47 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, it's kinda weird for me too. When I was a kid, like 1950s stuff wasn't very cool - Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly. Don't know if it is now or not. And so my gut expectation would be for today's youth to dismiss Led Zeppelin or something in a similar way, I guess. But that's not really how it works out.

xp

how's life, Friday, 4 May 2012 15:48 (fourteen years ago)

Obviously Skrillex at 100 is some "informed trolling" but there is a point to it I suppose. If you're looking to include a token person using "guitar textures" to make interesting music Fennesz is a much more defensible inclusion. Other notable exclusions at first blush (in rough order of WTF-ness): Dean Warhem, Loren Connors, Michio Kurihara, Richard Bishop, Jeff Parker, Jack Rose, Ben Chasny, Keith Rowe. Would be very interested to hear how the selection process went down.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Friday, 4 May 2012 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think it really matters in the end. who was included. as i said earlier on this thread, A+ job by whiney to make people think about Spin in 2012. that's the important thing.

well yeah, seeing as he actually is a guitarist

xp it's not an article as much as people complaining about the lack of Buckethead and Flea

I like that list Whiney, fwiw, but guitar people reactions to this are even better, I didn't know before that hearing about SY is some king of obscure, arcane knowledge

V79, Friday, 4 May 2012 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

Oh god, this.

No STEVE LUKATHER??? The people at Spin are Spun. That list is worthless and is an offense to any good guitar player that really understands what it takes to be a master of the instrument. I'm surprised that list doesn't include Tiny Tim and Don Ho.
