Sorry Son House, but you're no Ira Kaplan.

Yeah it's great!

suidavyvan eht nioj (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:03 (fourteen years ago)

i like that simply by compiling a list of people who play the guitar you've pissed off so many people.

(Name Withheld to Avoid Hassle) (forksclovetofu), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:13 (fourteen years ago)

where did vini reilly place

the aower of aussy (electricsound), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:14 (fourteen years ago)

to be fair you put the words "all-time" and "greatest" atop a list of anything and you're going to piss off so many people

jesus christ (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:14 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, it's expert trolling for sure.

if youre not gonna put son house or jimmy page on the list then for christ's sakes don't put jack white on it.

yup and it never fails to drive me nuts

call all destroyer, Friday, 4 May 2012 02:31 (fourteen years ago)

like with so many lists of this type (as mr. underrated suggests), a fair amount of it seems to be about namechecking bands as opposed to musicians/musicianship.

Like, the dude from Gang of Four? Mr Zzz from the Yawn Yawn Yawns?

sarahell, Friday, 4 May 2012 02:32 (fourteen years ago)

Thank you for the new nickname.

Vini Reilly Invasion (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:33 (fourteen years ago)

Andy Gill seems like he was pretty influential as a guitarist

l0u1s j0rdan (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:45 (fourteen years ago)

I don't have a problem with the list per se, other than the writing is terrible and occasionally inaccurate (x & y in a food processor? Stevie Ray Vaughn plays guitar on "Let's Dance" not Nile Rogers. Rogers produced (and plays guitar elsewhere on the album)

Vini Reilly Invasion (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:49 (fourteen years ago)

Vaughn plays lead, Rodgers plays rhythm on the track "Let's Dance" actually

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:50 (fourteen years ago)

Anyway, getting mad about this list is like getting mad at one of Cracked's lists.

Having said that, Pat Place and John McGeoch aren't on this list so fuck this list and fuck Spin.

Vini Reilly Invasion (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:51 (fourteen years ago)

Huh, didn't realize that... I knew that Rogers played elsewhere on the album (the Pushing Ahead Of The Dame blog gets into all the details and Rogers' frankly impossible job at hand), but I thought the title track was all Vaughn. Would love to hear a track-by-track breakdown of it.

Vini Reilly Invasion (Elvis Telecom), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:55 (fourteen years ago)

The chink-a-chink rhythm parts are all Rodgers.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 4 May 2012 02:58 (fourteen years ago)

can't believe MF Doom got left off, he totally plays the guitar, verbally, man

to say nothing of Bobby McFerrin

speaking of which where's the harmonica guy from Blues Traveler

caulk the wagon and float it, Friday, 4 May 2012 03:31 (fourteen years ago)

rly mad they didn't include the cast of Friends on the list

caulk the wagon and float it, Friday, 4 May 2012 03:32 (fourteen years ago)

and if Jam Master Jay made it on then we should include other people who only fictionally play guitar like the kid from Deliverance and Samuel L Jackson's character from Black Snake Moan

And shouldn't the Disaster Area guy be here also? They're a thousand times more doom, sludge, etc. than the pikers on this list. Plus they're in the future!

he even has his own pedal

24 Steve Albini (Big Black/Shellac) SOMEONE FORGOT RAPEMAN, p cool list otherwise tho

lag∞n, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:07 (fourteen years ago)

is this list in any order

lag∞n, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:09 (fourteen years ago)

the numbers are 'points,' so skrillex has 100 points, sonic youth dudes have 1 point

some dude, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:17 (fourteen years ago)

so unfair, but i guess maybe if they had more bass drops or w/e

lag∞n, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:32 (fourteen years ago)

its funny because i remember from my spin reading youth when they used to like to include public enemy or whoever under the heading of 'rock' and now look theyre still doing it, its a spin tradition

lag∞n, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:37 (fourteen years ago)

jam master jay at ten is way stranger than skrillex because if you dont play guitar you should totally be confined to the bottom third IMHO

lag∞n, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:38 (fourteen years ago)

in all seriousness tho its a sweet alt list and there are tons of doods i love on there, its cool to do something a lil diff that doesnt quite make sense

lag∞n, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:45 (fourteen years ago)

it probably doesn't work as well online but the David Marchese infographic comparing a bunch of guitarists that's in the actual issue is so much cooler than the list: http://www.greatkat.com/59/articles/spinmagazine.html

some dude, Friday, 4 May 2012 04:50 (fourteen years ago)

^^^

Elmore James too, Guitar Slim, or if you simply have to have the "but he combined all their styles and brought nothing of his own to the table/he's basically our kinda people!" quality at least go with Greg Cartwright

For all the posturing about "the kids," the SPIN list is really for people in their 40s.

#2 Kevin Shields: Didn't know writing boring pentatonic metalcore riffs based off of Maiden tunes would get you on any list anywhere.

okay this gave me a much-needed lol

the list of guitarists that people in their 20s listen to is pretty short, though

some dude, Friday, 4 May 2012 11:40 (fourteen years ago)

Should have thrown Nathan Chapman in there.

that list is kinda cool. but yeah jack white is right up there with corgan for me as far as people who make me want to blow my brains out. and what whiney said about jeff beck is how i feel about j mascis. unless j is drumming in deep wound. then i love him. better trolling would have left out fahey and basho. and included whatsherface from the shaggs and the banjo player for the monks.

scott seward, Friday, 4 May 2012 13:59 (fourteen years ago)

Hey Viv Albertine! This list rules. Good work Whiney.
