when a dj cuts out the bass, what effect do they generally use? or do they just kill the low EQ (or whatever you call the knob with the word "low")?
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 5 May 2012 14:05 (fourteen years ago)
They usually just kill the low EQ. There's more possibilites. Sometimes it's using a high pass filter. Some mixers have "kill" switches on each band of EQ. The latest/greatest pioneer has a switch so you can define if the EQ's lower the level of that band or cut it out altogether. And old-school house style and big systems often have a separate "isolater" with is like a master EQ for the crossover that can be used.
But usually they just kill the low EQ.
― dan selzer, Saturday, 5 May 2012 17:19 (fourteen years ago)
I tried killing the low eq on my software and it sounds like crap. Using filter sounds so much better. Must be the software, yes?
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 5 May 2012 23:35 (fourteen years ago)
could be a virus
― the late great, Sunday, 6 May 2012 00:04 (fourteen years ago)
could be file compression, are you using lossless flac?
― the late great, Sunday, 6 May 2012 00:15 (fourteen years ago)
What software?

― fauxmarc, Sunday, 6 May 2012 00:52 (fourteen years ago)
well, not really crap, but it just makes the track sound thinner instead of just killing the bass and keeping the rest of the track intact. so I use filter sweep or this effect called adjust low instead. the program is mixmeister. the files are 320 kbps mp3.
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 6 May 2012 01:07 (fourteen years ago)
you need monster cable dude
― the late great, Sunday, 6 May 2012 01:13 (fourteen years ago)
mixmeister looks like a genuinely awful piece of software from the screenshots I just looked up
― Clay, Sunday, 6 May 2012 01:15 (fourteen years ago)
haha, it's not the best software in the world but it's so easy to use. anyway, I'm getting a mixtrack pro controller with traktor and I just can't wait.
― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 6 May 2012 01:26 (fourteen years ago)
Traktor's mixing algorithms are pretty great, especially if you use lossless files.
It's not quite virgin vinyl through a 3000 dollar mixer great, but good enough for me.

Sounds great...and looking forward to part one!
Here's a real party starter...our first night doing Dazzle Ships at Bellwether, very low-key, a lot of ambient type stuff, nice background music. Some new wave, some techno. Some 80s Scott Walker. New place, using a Urei mixer, stuck behind the raw bar while people were finishing dinner, so not a lot of mixing of hi-nrg dance musics.

Thanks. Jeremy played that, but I turned him onto it for what it's worth. My segment starts with Wall of Voodoo's Ring of Fire and ends with Marcel King's Reach for Love.

sweet, that was their pinnacle by a million light years
think it was "they came in peace" though
― the late great, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 02:37 (fourteen years ago)
I think I like They Came in peace, Cantamilla and Mya Yadana equally. They were freely spread amongst many CD compilations of the time. Excursions in Ambience had Mya Yadana, , California Dreaming had Cantimilla and the first Headz had They Came in Peace.
― dan selzer, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 03:15 (fourteen years ago)
first heard "they came in peace" on this ain't trip hop? and later on headz, which took a little bit for me to get ahold of at the time. i kinda stumbled on to "royalties overdue" in san diego but never could find any other mo'wax stuff until i went to berkeley.
― the late great, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 03:37 (fourteen years ago)
I'm a super nostalgic person and it warms my heart to remember, vividly, the moments when "ambient techno" such as Excursions in Ambience, or a bit later Headz/Trip Hop were truly the most exciting and cutting edge things I knew of!
