interesting. you work for auntie i presume?

Thanks, trace and rtc! I do hope as FS evolve and expand into other areas that they don't completely abandon their signature bubbly, hyper-colorful, intricately convoluted Funky/Garage sound, because there's no one I'm aware of to fill that void.

incredible!

boxedjoy, Monday, 21 May 2012 10:11 (twelve years ago) link

I wish they'd done a little more with "Oliver Twist" but I feel ridiculous even saying anything negative about such a horn o' plenty

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 21 May 2012 11:18 (twelve years ago) link

agree but then it's probably about a year before everyone's up to the time with afro

r|t|c, Monday, 21 May 2012 11:47 (twelve years ago) link

three weeknd remixes? :/

The Reverend, Monday, 21 May 2012 12:25 (twelve years ago) link

three weeknd remixes? :)

I'm on my fourth download attempt, fingers crossed.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 21 May 2012 12:50 (twelve years ago) link

OK, Vybz Kartel remix much better than any of the Weeknd remixes. The pitched up Buju, ehh.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 21 May 2012 13:39 (twelve years ago) link

Now I'm trying to figure out which one of their Rihanna remixes are superior.

Josiah Alan, Monday, 21 May 2012 14:01 (twelve years ago) link

cake

The Reverend, Monday, 21 May 2012 14:25 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, that Cake remix. This whole collection is super generous and awesome!

Does anyone know the significance of the titles (Miami Bass vs. Loveshy) btw?

MikoMcha, Monday, 21 May 2012 14:40 (twelve years ago) link

Yes! Love that Buju Banton remix, brilliant that one, as are they all, including the Rudekid remix they just put out. I wouldn't think the Weeknd (or Bruno Mars for that matter) would be the best material for them to remix, but I think they all work, love the dark garage vibe of those. Ridiculous how many good tunes Funkystepz have amassed.

"the motto" sounds amazing

No I don't, and I haven't listened to it yet (dl it at work). But a huge part of me wishes that Loveshy takes its inspiration from Kristine Blond's "Love Shy", the Club Asylum remix of which is one of my all time favourite pieces of music ever.

Also,

so much better than the original version and esp the fucking chris brown remix

I actually assumed this and feel likewise.

Tim F, Tuesday, 22 May 2012 08:16 (twelve years ago) link

yeah i assume that too

massive lol @ how they pitch drake's voice to sound like some sort of gremlin on "the motto" remix

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:44 (twelve years ago) link

the "oliver twist" one is a bit pointless though

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:44 (twelve years ago) link

CAKECAKECAKECAKECAKE probably takes the cake

it's funny cuz there's a tennis player whose nickname is CAKE and worlds are colliding here

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Thursday, 24 May 2012 06:45 (twelve years ago) link

It's the Esthero remix that I keep coming back to. I dunno, it just suits me right now

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 24 May 2012 17:38 (twelve years ago) link

Birthday Cake is INCREDIBLE. These guys should be producing Rihanna

Number None, Thursday, 24 May 2012 21:47 (twelve years ago) link

i was thinking Minaj....

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 24 May 2012 21:48 (twelve years ago) link

whatever, get them on the charts

Number None, Thursday, 24 May 2012 21:49 (twelve years ago) link

fuck, both the rihanna & drake songs are dope as hell

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 24 May 2012 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

CAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKECAKE has been in my head for the past three days and it is making my life better. Can these guys not just get Lily Mackenzie or whoever to do a full album of banging vocal tracks of their own so I don't have to feel guilty about not turning off Bruno Mars/Drake?

boxedjoy, Friday, 25 May 2012 22:55 (twelve years ago) link

also one of the simplest pleasures I'm getting from listening to this collection is from shouting FUNKYSTEPZ at moments it could/does fit in, I might have to create a "best funky producer audio tag" poll

boxedjoy, Friday, 25 May 2012 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

I have the "FUN-KY-STEPZ" and "PRE-DI-TAH" tags enter my brain at the randomest moments

The Reverend, Friday, 25 May 2012 23:04 (twelve years ago) link

I also get the Crazy Cousinz "oh", Cooly G's "mmmm-mwah", Ill Blu's "eww", Champion's "champion sound" and "Roska Roska Roska" popping into my head a lot. I'm sure you could argue that it says a lot for the songcraft of these producers when even their sound tags are earworms.

boxedjoy, Friday, 25 May 2012 23:10 (twelve years ago) link

xp hahaha me too reverend, today: bus

moullet, Friday, 25 May 2012 23:16 (twelve years ago) link

terror's danjah "reh reh reh"

moullet, Friday, 25 May 2012 23:26 (twelve years ago) link

funkystepz tag is a classic 4 all time

crazy cousins "OH!" is my fav

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 26 May 2012 02:33 (twelve years ago) link

I hear the Crazy Cousinz one as a "WOO!"

The Reverend, Saturday, 26 May 2012 02:37 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, you're right -- it's kind of a hook in itself... they really deploy it so well

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 26 May 2012 02:37 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, such a dope element in and of itself

The Reverend, Saturday, 26 May 2012 07:29 (twelve years ago) link

Lil Silva and Miss Fire are two more Funky producers with sound tags, I'm sure I'm forgetting some. Wonder why so many in Funky? I agree Funkystepz's is the best, it not only lets you know it's them, but how they deploy it right before the drop really pushed the tune even higher.

Astrochimp32, Saturday, 26 May 2012 22:08 (twelve years ago) link

i also like "donaaeeeeooo. donnaaaaeeeeooooo"

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 26 May 2012 22:18 (twelve years ago) link

the bruno mars remix is really good too

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 27 May 2012 02:59 (twelve years ago) link

i always think of the crazy cousinz tag as that sing-song "cray-zee cou-sinz, cray-zee cou-sinz"

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Sunday, 27 May 2012 11:10 (twelve years ago) link

I always think of the Ill Blu one as the echoey deep computer voice 'ill-ill Blu'. I don't think I spotted the eww until the thread on here. MY faves are at the mo are prob Funkystepz and Champion. Worst was prob when you go see Marcus Nasty and you get a dreary voice slowly saying over every other track 'marcus nasty dubplate special' even if the song had been out for years.

can't remember who posted the dj diamond cuts philly party mix but every time she triggers "this is a rest in peace shout-out to the rest of the airwaves, because dj diamond cuts is KILLIN IT" i loved it just a little bit mote

what was dope about this one was how sometimes they just dropped it as an instrumental melody and it was still enough to mark their territory, so to say

The Reverend, Sunday, 27 May 2012 23:17 (twelve years ago) link

Wonder why so many in Funky?

A lot of grime guys do it as well. Terror and Preditah obv, but ppl like Silencer (TEDDY!), Rude Kid (Are you ready! / Always ready!), D.O.K. (Ha!), Skepta/JME (Serious!) and Spooky (spooky... a bit crap that one). Thought it might have something to do with the DJs / producers not having to rely on egocentric MCs to shout them out, but I'm just guessing here.

Mercer Finn, Monday, 28 May 2012 03:50 (twelve years ago) link
