it's hysterical because they were so clearly trying to be everything to everyone and ended up with something that neither the old goodie fans nor the new cee-lo solo fans could possibly embrace

re: noz's review, it is very good, i think his conclusion i probably shift in a different direction on, though.
As much as his early tracks benefitted from the freedom that hip-hop offers, he now seems burdened by its conventions. The purist will listen to this and imagine how much better it would be if Future tried to rap more. The more adventurous listener might wonder what he could accomplish if he broke free of his genre's gravitational pull entirely.
maybe i agree w/ this, or maybe i disagree -- but i think its that tension that energizes it, but shudder at the idea of him leaving rap behind entirely? that its grounding in rap convention charges it & gives it a root-edness that creates a necessary tension ... like 'turn on the lights' transcends rap completely, and is stronger for it, but 'permanent scar' is one of my favorite tracks on the record despite being completely about some of the formal defining rap conventions-- that 'turn on the lights' is that much more powerful b/c of its context & surroundings
so i agree w/ him in that, it does make you wonder what it would be like if he broke free, but i think i disagree that it would actually result in better music -- its more of a philosophical question to me, or something, rather than a practical one
― man down (D-40), Tuesday, 24 April 2012 18:15 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, great points. It's him on the fringes of rap music, still engaging with rap conventions but really engaging with and stretching those conventions. i agree if he forgoes them, i would be very worried.

Feds bust suspected Ecstasy drug network centered around Bay Area rap label
http://www.mercurynews.com/twitter/ci_20469324/feds-bust-suspected-ecstasy-drug-network-centered-around
Twenty-five individuals, many of them rappers associated with one of the Bay Area's largest entertainment labels known as "Thizz Entertainment," have been arrested as part of a major nationwide drug trafficking ring focused on Ecstasy, according to a federal prosecutor.
Agents seized about 45,000 Ecstasy pills, 4 pounds of crack cocaine, a half pound of heroin and $200,000 in suspected drug profits, and forfeited about 230 acres of property valued at about $1 million. The suspects, from Vallejo, Stockton, Oakland, Fairfield, Los Angeles, New York and Oklahoma City, were arrested Thursday, U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wagner said.
The investigation, led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, uncovered a network of drug distributors centered in Vallejo's Crest neighborhood, across Highway 37 from the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom theme park.
Thizz Entertainment was started in 1996 by Andre Hicks, a Vallejo rapper who went by Mac Dre. The word "thizz" derived from the feeling one feels while on MDMA, or ecstasy. On November 1, 2004, Mac Dre was shot and killed after a performance in Kansas City, Mo., which started a brief Vallejo-Kansas City rap war.
More than 60 artists have released albums on the label since Mac Dre's death, some were arrested in the federal drug probe.
Arrested on suspicion of multiple drug counts in the two federal complaints and in custody were: Major Norton, performs under the name "Dubee", Lawrence Nelson, Narco McFarland Sr., Eric Robinson, Eileen Knight, Ung Duong, Phat Nguyen, Marcus Davis, Michael Smiley, Anthony Young and Anthony Payton.
Charged and not yet in custody were: Michael Lott, performs under the name "Miami the Most," Gaylord Franklin, performs under the name "Geezy," Clifford Bullock, Latroy Cunningham, Dante Barbarin, Beshiba Cook, Bruce Thurmon, performs under the name "Little Bruce," Damian Peterson, Mikel Brown and Andre Cawthorne.
Charged and released from custody were Nicholas Ramirez and Tiffany Brown.
