Is there a reason this is so high? ie, is there any context that people would have heard it outside of the Arthur album?

Yeah, it's featured on CD 2 of 'The Ultimate Collection', which was a Best Of that came out in 2002.

I completely disagree. 'Waterloo Sunset' has always been one of those songs that, for me, goes in the 'I like it, it's okay, I see what the fuss is about but it doesn't have the same level of impact for me as it does for others' pile. Whereas 'Days' is a song that, as someone rightly said above, really is something else. 'Waterloo Sunset' didn't make my ballot.
Reverse "Waterloo" and "Days" in the above, and that's exactly how I feel. "Days" didn't make my ballot.
― Waterloo? Oh, we've sunsetted that. (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 23 April 2012 19:06 (twelve years ago) link
Waterloo Sunset was my #1 and Days my #2. I've always thought of them his two emotional heavy-hitters - big-hearted songs from a not naturally big-hearted man - so I'm kind of surprised anyone would love one and be lukewarm on the other.

The Ultimate Collection is my main exposure to the band and i had never had any idea that "Shangri-La" was thought of as a standout or notable song
― Poor Turrican (some dude), Monday, 23 April 2012 19:10 (twelve years ago) link
the idea that ppl only vote for songs they consider sufficiently 'notable' is rather baffling. i put 'shangri-la' at the top of my list bcz it is basically the most moving song i've ever heard.

jesus that's not what i was saying at all, just that i knew it neither as a hit i'd encountered out in the world, nor a title i'd heard referenced by fans a lot but hadn't heard on the radio (like, say, "Waterloo Sunset"), nor as a song i naturally gravitated to as a favorite (xpost)

Victoria finishing 1 would be an upset. I'm thrilled it's this high...unless it's shut out.

Re: Shangri-La: it's a nice touch that their best single, all about reaching the top and not getting any higher, didn't chart. I had it at #1 and didn't rank Waterloo at all...

I guess I can see why it would be quite surprising when you put it like that. For me, all it pretty much boils down to is that 'Days' is a song that has always meant a hell of a lot to me, whereas 'Waterloo Sunset' has never meant anything to me. I do wish that 'Waterloo Sunset' had the same level of impact on me as it seems to for others, but it just doesn't.
