Makes me want to change mine to Baron FAPurday, but on second thought, no.

Waterloo? Oh, we've sunsetted that. (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 22 April 2012 00:52 (fourteen years ago)

Hm. I had a screen name based on that once, where was it, let's see. OK, look here: Album Covers Featuring Tiny People Living In The Artist's Or Cover Model's Hair

Did you guys know that Lenny Breau's first jazz session (1961) was with Levon Helm and Rick Danko as rhythm section? Also, it fucking smokes. They're not an amazing jazz rhythm section but they get out of the way, which is the best thing they could do for his liszt-esque runs.

Just asked one of TD's well-known students if he played the list everyday. He laughed and said "Everyday? I'm still trying to get through it!"

Seriously, I think I went crazy trying to play Parisian Thoroughfare on the guitar. Of course I had only heard the lightning-fast Bud Powell version and it had never occurred to me to play it half time like here:

oh and I forgot to mention that the super-fast bud powell version is the one he gave us on the tape he gave us with all the tunes. Small fuck you for that one Ted, RIP all the same.

Just trying to do my job as Jazz Investigator, Josh.

Guy also said he can still hear Ted's voice

Question: which two beloved, much missed Jazz Guitarists/Teachers were born in Port Arthur, Texas? Hint: one played on many film soundtracks including those of The Wild Bunch and Ocean's Eleven, both of which he was an extra in.

Next question: What Jazz Guitarist had a successful career at his advertising day job before he retired to play music full-time and has just written a bestselling cookbook?

F is for Fule (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 8 June 2012 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

no idea!
but i was listening to this album last night.

very nice, but a missed opportunity w/ the cover image -- should've had kessel standing at the stove flipping a pancake or something.

tylerw, Friday, 8 June 2012 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

If I could imagine one jazz guitarist being successful in advertising and writing a cookbook, it'd be George Benson, but I'm guessing that's wrong.

He's not a famous guitarist.

F is for Fule (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 8 June 2012 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

I only learned of him because he his a family friend of a guy I know but he is well-known in certain circles.

There's some jazz guitar in Sunnyside this Wednesday, if you want to kill two birds with one stone and check out your new neighborhood.

Also, the other guitar player, Tosh, whose gig it is, has two little kids so you can ask him about facilities for children in the area.

Hurting, you neglected to conduct the requisite pre-poll poll to see how many people would actually vote and adjust the number of nominees accordingly.

OK, I just read One Long Tune: The Life and Music of Lenny Breau and it knocked me flat. Will report at length later.

Albee Thousand (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 4 January 2013 12:42 (thirteen years ago)

The whole story unfolds like some kind of Michael Chabon/Cameron Crowe confection about The World's Greatest Guitarist, piling incident upon incident of, just when you thought there were no more left, another Guitar Player's Guitar Player or Guitar Player's Guitar Teacher stepping forward to say "I thought I knew something about the instrument but then Lenny came to town and stayed over to my house where we jammed all night and he showed me had mastered my style and in fact greatly improved upon it. Whenever he came through again he would stop over and show me some new stuff he was working on while I kept the tape rolling but I in the end couldn't really play it because my technique wasn't good enough." All this leading up to the dark Sunset Boulevard/Jim Thompson denouement. I exaggerate but not much.
