moka - any particular reason other than ruining the ILM "top 100 post-frankentrance tracks of the 10s" we're going poll eight years from now?
― the late great
Well, the poll title says tracks of the 00's. It irks me to include tracks from the past couple of years. Might as well add songs from 1999.
On an unrelated note, I was thinking that maybe splitting it into two polls would be a good idea to reduce the noms. On one poll original tracks and on the other one remixes. Just like they do it on Resident Advisor.
― Moka, Saturday, 21 April 2012 16:47 (fourteen years ago)
We already have +1000 tracks and at least 200 are remixes.
― Moka, Saturday, 21 April 2012 16:49 (fourteen years ago)
lets keep it one epic poll

OK
a few reminders
1) even though the list of nominations is not going to be capped - unlike many other polls where people got a maximum number of nominations - the # of votes ARE going to be capped.
2) so whether we go with a ranking or a points system, you aren't going to be able to vote for *everything* you want to, and i am personally strongly in favor of giving extra weight to ballots w/ fewer tracks on them (a point system would make this simplest)
3) this means that you probably want to go through the list and see how many tracks are already up that you'd want vote for before you add any more nominations. for example, i just spent five minutes doing that and found about forty tracks i would probably nominate myself. this means i am now going to flip through my collection and pick maybe ten tracks i really want on the ballot so i can vote for them, rather than just grabbing every mix and compilation i have and nominating every track i enjoyed
4) as EDB said, for the love of god, please control-f or at least scan the list, just scrolling up and down quickly through the list i see a bunch of repeat noms, many of them rather obvious choices too
― the late great, Saturday, 21 April 2012 18:44 (fourteen years ago)
There's so many tracks now that there's going to be a really thin dispersal of votes presumably with a few tracks getting shitloads and some really surprising choices in the lower reaches of the list.
― Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Saturday, 21 April 2012 18:48 (fourteen years ago)
That depends how many votes we get
― Let's Talk About Socks (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 21 April 2012 18:55 (fourteen years ago)
yeah even though i am a maths/sciences person and statistics and probability is not my strong suit i can intuitively tell that "long tail" effect is kinda going to fuck over the integrity of the results if that tail gets big enough
― the late great, Saturday, 21 April 2012 18:58 (fourteen years ago)
or i guess i should say long enough
then again i imagine that is always a problem to some extent with any poll with a similar methodology, the choices/ordering at the "bottom" (ie less popular) are going to be less predictable and meaningful than the "top" no matter what, it's just going to be a matter of degrees
and also i am sure in the end the moaning on the results thread will not be about process but rather about the definition of house/techno and the pernicious influence of dance hipsterism / contrarianism / middlebrowism / grimebloggerism / pipecockism (see: jazz albums poll results)
― the late great, Saturday, 21 April 2012 19:02 (fourteen years ago)
TBH though it wouldn't be that different to having no nominations at all and everyone getting carte blanche to vote for any dance track they wanted.
Part of the reason I nominated more than I could feasibly vote for was because I wanted to at least have the option of voting for some of them, I have no idea what's going to make my final ballot and I want other people to have the option of voting for them as well.
― Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Saturday, 21 April 2012 19:06 (fourteen years ago)
yeah that's fair
i feel like i have a pretty good idea of what i'd vote for but that's mainly because memorability = quality in my head
― the late great, Saturday, 21 April 2012 19:07 (fourteen years ago)
to go back to what moka was saying about restricting the poll to 2000-2010
i do worry that my ballot is going to skew heavily toward the new new new, i found myself wanting to put a lot of stuff on the shortlist from the whole post-dubstep scene (2562, martyn, untold, hessle audio, etc) and i wonder whether that's just because their impact is much more immediate for me than, say, electroclash classixxx
(insert ramblings about critical distance)
― the late great, Saturday, 21 April 2012 19:14 (fourteen years ago)
i will probably vote for songs i had the most fun playing in clubs or dancing to, 2000 to 2006 was when i djed and went out to hear djs a lot.
― JacobSanders, Saturday, 21 April 2012 19:20 (fourteen years ago)
ime the more ballots that you receive the more 'legitimacy' - in the sense of % of total votes cast - the middle range of the results will have
its not that yr wrong is that the more ballots cast the further down the list the 'consensus' extends. i think its debatable about which of these is the most valid, i guess it depends on what the stated aim(s) of this poll are and whether or not you feel that a track with a limited but passionate constituency 'deserves' to place over a track with broader support.
― Lamp, Saturday, 21 April 2012 20:04 (fourteen years ago)
there are surprisingly few theo parrish tracks nominated so far
― the late great, Saturday, 21 April 2012 22:07 (fourteen years ago)
not even Solitary Flight... Which I guess is it's nomination right there

i think solitary flight IS up there actually
here's a few nominations of my own
abe duque - what happenedcassius - sound of violencedave clarke - the wolfdj cole medina - buffalo bill (og mix)losoul - liessandwell district - variance (function edit)skudge - convolutionsmith'n'hack - space warriorsoundstream - live goes ontom trago - lost in the streets of nyc

A lot of Theo and Moodymann tracks which I think of as 00s tracks, when i check all first came out in the late 90s.
― Tim F, Sunday, 22 April 2012 00:02 (fourteen years ago)
this is such a depressing thread
― Lamp, Sunday, 22 April 2012 00:06 (fourteen years ago)
why do you say that, lamp?
tim - i was wondering about that too, also even though i'm a huge fan i think it's easy to acknowledge that their 90s work fairly blows away their 00s work, though theo has been having a slight renaissance lately
it would be interesting to try to work with some sort of geometric mean system - that way a track that got a 20th place vote and a 30th place vote would average at 24.5 pts whereas a track that got two 25th place votes would average at 25 pts
we would then need to, uh, de-normalize the means by multiplying up by the number of votes
going to mall w/ gf to "shop for new jeans" (for her), will try to do the back of envelope calculation to see how this might play out while "we" shop for jeans

idk just ppls lists so far itt, seems p joyless or s.thing, no sense of play or adventure just cataloging of xp deathless listmaking forever blah blah blah
i mean i love making lists of things it brings order and meaning but i guess well see how this turns out
― Lamp, Sunday, 22 April 2012 01:51 (fourteen years ago)
yeah i agree w/ you that i'm not much enthused by the majority of noms but didn't feel it would be politic to point that out
― the late great, Sunday, 22 April 2012 02:41 (fourteen years ago)
Well if I nominated what I actually liked no one would vote for it.
50 dubstep tracks and a bunch of ultra obscure deep house is just going to add to that long tail.

i don't think think this thread is boring at all, this will be my first poll like this to be a part of because the music meant a lot to me. looking forward to the final list to choose from cause i know i forgot a lot of tracks. lots of trapez and perlon i'm forgetting.

Herbert - Moving Like A Train (Smith N' Hack Remix)
I've been having a good time w/this or w/e because I've been able to dig out setlists from 06 house parties or mixtape tracklistings from 03 or primeval ILx threads about Areal from the two-three years where I only had internet access at netcafes or songs I remember from the two times someone from Kompakt came to NZ to DJ during that decade &c&c&c. Admittedly this isn't coming through by just listing tracks, but I figure once the nominations are sorted we can start advocating things.
Er I'm w/V4hid on the possibility of a geometric mean system or something as an alternative to the standard ILx vote weighting system, but I don't have a lot to contribute math-wise.
