^^agree with this

the Tupac herogram (haitch), Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:58 (fourteen years ago)

And then, if uk funky is excluded, should we also exclude Dennis Ferrer?

...wut

anyway this makes a lot more sense now that i see the orig request for a nomination thread came from the house/techno bobbins thread

fauxmarc, Thursday, 19 April 2012 04:59 (fourteen years ago)

why would we exclude garage or etc? that shit doesn't even make sense to me.

hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:01 (fourteen years ago)

yes, tim. I want uk funky and post-dubstep excluded, as much as I like both. but I think electrohouse (booka shade, etc) belongs in this poll. as well as Dennis Ferrer. I mean, he's as house as house can be in my ears.

yes, that can be a good parameter. anything that belongs in the house/techno bobbins threads, belongs here. there, I think we have our scope. what do you think, late great?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:05 (fourteen years ago)

we can have a "dance partisans" poll later, ha.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:07 (fourteen years ago)

i could mostly give less of a fuck about the bobbins thread :/

hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:07 (fourteen years ago)

i don't see the point in having seperate polls tho

hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:07 (fourteen years ago)

i mean, i think v's original formulation is pretty straightforward

looollll. ok, what about house/techno and anything closely related? it means no dnb, breaks, dubstep (ouch), etc.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:25 (fourteen years ago)

would also mean about 75% of trax already nommed would be out

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:27 (fourteen years ago)

What Else Is There (Trentemøller Mix) Röyksopp

JacobSanders, Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:28 (fourteen years ago)

Matias Aguayo -Minimal (Dj Koze Remix)

pattern loader, Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:29 (fourteen years ago)

I don't really get why you would exclude UK Funky and include Ferrer.

In that case it's as logical to say "no techno not from detroit".

Tim F, Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:30 (fourteen years ago)

Not that I really care but i think if you're gonna be restrictive then you should have a think about what the biases really are.

if this is really about "middle class refined house and techno only please" then say so.

Tim F, Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:31 (fourteen years ago)

more like 75% of the trax already nommed are fitting enough. 85%, even.

xpost

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:34 (fourteen years ago)

i like the idea of an all encompassing electronic dance music poll of the 00s

JacobSanders, Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:36 (fourteen years ago)

Audion - Mouth to Mouth
Matthew Jonson - Marionette

pattern loader, Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:38 (fourteen years ago)

I'd just say to hell with it and let the voters decide which tracks are house/techno related and which are not. We're cool enough to do that, right? About Dennis Ferrer, I don't understand what's the deal. Yes, maybe his tracks get played by uk funky dj's but his tracks are house, no doubt about it.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:39 (fourteen years ago)

i'm also still trying to grasp this tying of ferrer to funky rather than mainstream house archetypes and it isn't happening at all

fauxmarc, Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:42 (fourteen years ago)

Shackleton - Blood On My Hands (Ricardo Villalobos Remix)

pattern loader, Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:42 (fourteen years ago)

I think it's best to have a wide range of noms, and people can decide for themselves what they consider to fit under the umbrella. If only because I think this Dennis Ferrer/UK Funky v House thing would be just the tip of the iceberg.

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:44 (fourteen years ago)

also I'm well excited for this. thanks lg!

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:44 (fourteen years ago)

and what kind of umbrella is it?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:47 (fourteen years ago)

Well the umbrella would presumably be "electronic dance tracks of the 00s"

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:51 (fourteen years ago)

also is this 2000-2009?

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Thursday, 19 April 2012 05:52 (fourteen years ago)

if that's the umbrella then I don't see any debate about what fits and what doesn't.

let's make it 2000-now.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:05 (fourteen years ago)

exactly

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:09 (fourteen years ago)

I think it's best to have a wide range of noms, and people can decide for themselves what they consider to fit under the umbrella. If only because I think this Dennis Ferrer/UK Funky v House thing would be just the tip of the iceberg.

yeah I was just citing it as an example.

But if you can't see why saying "The Cure & The Cause" is in but "Do You Mind" is out is thoroughly inconsistent then you do not have ears.

Tim F, Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:15 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not the kind of person who typically says "screw genre it's all a big free for all" but I thinkl there are loads of fairly dodgy assumptions behind running "house / techno" together as if "we all know" what kind of music this means.

Tim F, Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:16 (fourteen years ago)

ok then, so not to waste any more time, let's make this an EDM poll. stuff like Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, M.I.A. don't count right? please, at least you guys can agree with me on this, lol.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:18 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i would assume that. remixes are fine though.

stay in school if you want to kiw (Gukbe), Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:19 (fourteen years ago)

what about edits?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:23 (fourteen years ago)

if anyone wants to nominate tessio then please state which version.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:28 (fourteen years ago)

i think there are def rapture and LCD tracks (i need love, someone great) that are as housey as, say, superpitcher's mix of "the dream of evan and chan". i loathe that track but i bet it will place.

but yeah, i imagine that "house of jealous lovers" is out

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:30 (fourteen years ago)

disco edits?? that def seems out IMO.

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:31 (fourteen years ago)

but, but, they are like...bands.

yes, like tiger and woods.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:36 (fourteen years ago)

my motive for wanting to include stuff like funky, ukg, dubstep, etc is just to make a more interesting poll and to include more diverse voices while still keeping the logical consistency of ok, these are all musics we can trace back to, or i dunno, maybe just essentially indebted to mr fingers and kevin saunderson (even drum and bass)

it's probably why i prefer RA's end of year roundup to LWE's, or pitchfork's to terrorizer's or CMJ's

what's the argument for purity?

would a workable compromise be to do an all-inclusive poll and then release the data and allow people to figure out separate "house only" or "techno only" rankings by throwing out shit they don't like?

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:38 (fourteen years ago)

don't see why some m.i.a. couldn't be considered if someone wanted. pull up the people rather than than paper planes, for example

fauxmarc, Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:41 (fourteen years ago)

i think part of the point of a nominations process is to exclude tracks that don't meet the criteria at this stage, and by "don't meet the criteria" i'd say anything where the nominator is obviously stretching a point. UKG etc. are fine in this context imo cos at least one of their ancestors is Detroit.

aboulia banks (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:44 (fourteen years ago)

inner city and fingers inc were bands too!!

edits are really sticky territory

i really have no desire to be a gatekeeper or editor, i'm down to tabulate and do logistical stuff but deciding why theo's ugly edits or soul clap's garbage edits make the cut but magnetic man is (as obama put it) "above my pay grade"

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:44 (fourteen years ago)

maybe shd set a threshhold based on BPM

aboulia banks (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:46 (fourteen years ago)

"why magnetic man *doesn't* is"

the late great, Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:46 (fourteen years ago)

Wouldn't have thought the dntel remix would place for superpitcher, too many other better tracks.

I'm going to allow this! (LocalGarda), Thursday, 19 April 2012 06:47 (fourteen years ago)

Henrik Schwarz - Stop Look And Listen
Rhythm And Sound - Poor People Must Work (Carl Craig Remix)
Martyn - Seventy Four (Redshape Mix)
Panda Bear - Bros
The Field - Kappsta
Pantha Du Prince – Eisbaden

i like how you try to sneak panda bear in behind a few excellent choices
