Basically no singles went gold during that time except for American Idol-related stuff that wasn't getting airplay and only charting because of CD single sales. It was an all or nothing proposition.

hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

Well the charting positions are still pretty indicative.

(think this is true of many things now besides just straight pop btw, cf rick ross (the rap lana del ray)

you can't just put this out there.

Tim F, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

I can confirm that it is really fucking embarrassing when you accidentally play the opening to Roman Holiday off your phone in the office and you're scrambling and failing to turn it off while actually on your desk phone to someone else.

Homosexual Satan Wasp (Matt DC), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:45 (fourteen years ago)

Well the charting positions are still pretty indicative.

That "Work It" was her biggest hit?

some dude, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

some dude, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

haha I thought the Rick Ross as Lana del Rap thing was brilliant whether an opinion4u or not

hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 20:56 (fourteen years ago)

I guess both are like the wizard hologram in The Wizard of Oz.

Tim F, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

rick ross the rap lana del rey is amusingly otm

what's embarrassing is when you're walking down the street or on public transport and concentrating on just mouthing the lyrics rather than rapping out loud and then you suddenly realise you're doing nicki faces involuntarily and look completely mental

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

and then you concentrate on not doing the faces and then accidentally sing "DICK IN YOUR FACE. PUT MY DICK IN YOUR FACE" out loud

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:02 (fourteen years ago)

The rumors turn me on, I'm masturbating at the top

(think this is true of many things now besides just straight pop btw, cf rick ross (the rap lana del ray) or trey songz or whoever really)

i always put this down to collapse-of-industry desperation necessitating the creation of a loyal stanbase who buy into an artist as a brand, a lifestyle, not just someone performing good songs

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

yes

some dude, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:15 (fourteen years ago)

rick ross (the rap lana del ray)

lol waht... explain this please.

Peace (peaceful) (The Brainwasher), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:17 (fourteen years ago)

rawse and songz are pertinent examples b/c i'd have been fine with them puttering away as third-tier artists without any real charisma or compelling persona who just alighted on the occasional hot song, which is their natural condition and that's totally fine, but to see them fêted as great artists is seriously o_0 o_0 o_0

i assume it's the illusion of an idealised "type" that neither are actually up to pulling off most of the time

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:19 (fourteen years ago)

can we please leave ross out of your rape discourse

yeah i mean just in terms of branding i was thinking about it being like good little random adverts that come and go versus the furore and hype over what the next guinness or levis ad was, where the brand is pre-established and the work of the ad becomes about how it reifies the image already known

these all are uselessly broad strokes to be talking in though tbf

r|t|c, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:47 (fourteen years ago)

do people feel me on the foreground/background point i was trying to make or did that all just come noise

was kinda hoping someone would run with it and make me look good

r|t|c, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

*come out

r|t|c, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 21:50 (fourteen years ago)

azealia canks (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 22:05 (fourteen years ago)

I haven't gotten used to thinking of people in terms of "branding" tbh

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 22:06 (fourteen years ago)

Why does MTV censor the word "trap?"

billstevejim, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 06:18 (fourteen years ago)

"Come On A Cone"
"Beez In A Trap"
"Stupid Hoe"
Would've made a good 3-song EP.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 06:22 (fourteen years ago)

"I Am Your Leader" can sneak on there too even though I don't like the chorus.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 06:44 (fourteen years ago)

people who put together EPs or mini-albums of this that exclude "gun shot" are not doing it right

liberté, égalité, beyoncé (lex pretend), Wednesday, 18 April 2012 07:58 (fourteen years ago)

Maybe I need to hear it more but as of right now the chorus of "Gun shot" sounds like "forget about the Price Tag" so it's not really doing it for me.

"HOV Lane" is cool too.. I forgot about that one. So I'll up mine to a 5-song 10-inch.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 08:11 (fourteen years ago)

Rhyming "roman zolanski" with "roman polanski" in a song is so fucking stupid that it chills me to the marrow every time

azealia canks (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 19 April 2012 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

I kind of agree but then I heard jeezy rhyme 'chanel swag' with 'chanel bag' yesterday so

dayo, Thursday, 19 April 2012 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

that's a pretty standard jeezy rhyme though so I can't be mad at this point in my jeezy-listening career

dayo, Thursday, 19 April 2012 19:03 (fourteen years ago)

I think the root of the problem is that you have a Jeezy-listening career

I need new, hip khakis (DJP), Thursday, 19 April 2012 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

"this small stretch of songs would make a nice EP" is a really annoying way of saying "this album has three good songs"

yologram (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 19 April 2012 19:04 (fourteen years ago)

thank you

lathe darkman (some dude), Thursday, 19 April 2012 19:05 (fourteen years ago)

i kinda feel like she probably came up with the name 'roman zolanski' without consciously realizing it was one letter off from someone pretty famous who it wouldn't really be cool in any way for her to shout out, so that line was just her awkward way of belatedly acknowledging and dismissing that

lathe darkman (some dude), Friday, 20 April 2012 00:29 (fourteen years ago)

i still dont get who roman is?x
