why not this POLL is exhausted
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 12 April 2012 02:16 (fourteen years ago)
"Happy" is FOR ALL TIME, but this record tended to lose me after "This Boy Is Exhausted" and I don't even remember how any of those songs go now.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 12 April 2012 02:22 (fourteen years ago)
i liked it upon release, but the so-of-the-period vocals really kill it for me. it just brings back memories of that whole era that creed was actually at the epicenter of things, to think of such months
― kelpolaris, Thursday, 12 April 2012 02:30 (fourteen years ago)
Hopeless is what hooked me and whenever I come back to the album that song still kills me.
― Evan, Thursday, 12 April 2012 02:34 (fourteen years ago)
I loved this record when it came out. It still holds up as one of the best records by a rock band for the 2000s, yet after 2003 I never listened to it much.
Everyone Choose Sides, easy

Ex-Girl Collection.
― Simon H., Thursday, 12 April 2012 03:06 (fourteen years ago)
"boys, you won't"
probably the only record of its kind i like anymore
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Thursday, 12 April 2012 04:15 (fourteen years ago)
"She Sends Kisses," but could've picked just about any of them. Favorite album of all time.
― slagterm, Thursday, 12 April 2012 04:19 (fourteen years ago)
everyone, so far, has picked a different song. that is well sort of neat.

Led by ex-folkie Toni Brown (the principal composer) and ex-blueswoman Terry Garthwaite (whose three rhythm songs sizzle joyously), this may not be your idea of rock and roll. The music revolves around Brown's piano, which rolls more than it rocks, and the band goes for multi-percussion rather than the old in-out. I find it relaxing and exciting and amazingly durable; I can dance to it, and I can also fuck to it. The musical dynamic pits Brown's collegiate contralto against Garthwaite's sandpaper soul, and the lyrics are feminist breakthroughs. "Too Late, but Not Forgotten" remembers a trailer camp while "Red Wine at Noon" touches international finance, but the two protagonists are united by one overriding fact--they're victimized as wives. And it's about time somebody in rock and roll said so. A

I loved this record in early '04 but I replayed it last fall and was bored by the vocals. The arrangements are still ace.

This Boy is Exhausted. I rashly voted Happy, but it has that weak climax.

According to their twitter, they're mastering about 100-some odd mins of new material for a possible double album this year. (Or, you know, whenever.)

That's a Charles Bissell lyric; they tend to be head and shoulders above the others.
― Simon H., Friday, 13 April 2012 05:05 (fourteen years ago)
so i have started to listen to this album again, it is so heavy that i don't think i can make the whole album in one sitting...
― Bee OK, Saturday, 14 April 2012 02:18 (fourteen years ago)
so i see another bigger music board has bumped their Wrens thread because of this thread, lol.
― Bee OK, Saturday, 14 April 2012 03:45 (fourteen years ago)
What music board is bigger than this one?
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 14 April 2012 04:28 (fourteen years ago)
it's not bigger but not going to name it either, just thought it was funny.

― their private gesture for bison (difficult listening hour), Monday, 16 April 2012 17:08 (fourteen years ago)
haha i would usually skip the first few tracks and start w/ "this boy.."
prob "everyone chooses sides" or "ex-girl collection", but a couple of those bashers like "per second second" and "faster gun" deserves some love

and i don't feel the need to try to explainexcuses sounding the sameyou're gonna find, you're gonna findahhhhhhhhhhhh
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 03:16 (fourteen years ago)
put this on for the first time in 10 years. i skip the downtempo/ballads. but "happy" and "hopeless" are on repeat.
― 6 god none the richer (m bison), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 02:34 (ten years ago)
Skipping the ballads is madness, "Thirteen Grand" and "13 Months In 6 Minutes" are key
I was sad to hear about Charles Bissell's health issues.
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 04:20 (ten years ago)
it's just such a weird album for me to love. it just doesn't feel like me. but i do love it. i can't even think of another record like it that i really like. listening to it now. thus, reflection.
― scott seward, Friday, 9 March 2018 19:13 (eight years ago)
"Hopeless" is everything I could want from a song
― Evan R, Friday, 9 March 2018 20:30 (eight years ago)
Happy 20 to this classic.
It's a minor miracle when an album and myself age together perfectly in sync, but this one did it.
