I think it's hilarious because these beats are clearly what Lil B thinks are backpacker profound-rap beats, and that makes me smile.

not sure which of those are sarcastic responses, but it kinda makes sense. on first listen they can both be dismissed initially as "funny" artists by those who expect serious cat is serious in their music, but the more you spend time with 'em you realize they're both really fucking good at aping a wide range of styles within their respective wheelhouses.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 16:51 (fourteen years ago)

wasn't sarcastic in my case at least

Mississippi Butt Hurt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 11 April 2012 17:47 (fourteen years ago)

gene doesn't seem like a shitty person to me!

  • "When I was younger, I didn't even know how to walk. I was so self-conscious."
  • "Every single person you meet, look at them like a golden million dollar baby."

  • "I'm out here trying to get my Mitt Romney on."
  • "You guys are the first to hear it: I'm actually releasing my rock album. This is gonna be some garage punk. This one's for the rebels. Look out for the Lil B rock record, California Boy."
  • "Let's stop fracking. Who knows about hydraulic fracking? I'm like whodie, get that oil out the ocean!"
  • "Real talk, you guys are about to freak out because I got a song with one of the biggest artists on Earth coming."

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Thursday, 12 April 2012 04:12 (fourteen years ago)

i was really scared that this was gonna end up like the first "show" of the charlie sheen "tour" but i guess it wasn't nearly on that level

J0rdan S., Thursday, 12 April 2012 04:41 (fourteen years ago)

it was actually really awesome, i think. the crowd element was depressing but lil b despite doing zero preparation (which, you knew he would) was radiant the whole way through. he sort of ran through and returned to the same topics in a kind of thematic spiral, but it was never boring.

also, CALIFORNIA BOY

Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Thursday, 12 April 2012 04:56 (fourteen years ago)

Someone recorded it, btw. People screaming 'LOVEYOUBASEDGOD' at him wearing a little thin.

I love the guy, but I seriously can't keep up with him. I just got around to listening to Gods Father and there's two more now!

And now? “I go to sleep, I’m so happy — you know why? Because I know I’m living what I’m talking about. I go to sleep at the end of the day, I’m like” — and here he mimed sleeping like a baby. “It feels so good to be honest.” He mimed mumbling peacefully in his sleep: “Honesty … integrity … loyalty … passion … friendship.”

Someone in the crowd yelled: “Are you a brony?”

goole, Thursday, 12 April 2012 16:16 (fourteen years ago)

the fact that EMP was in the same building and a good amount of NYU students appeared to be in attendance makes me grateful for what a totally different vibe we had there

deejeridoo (some dude), Thursday, 12 April 2012 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

That's for goddamn sure.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 12 April 2012 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

so... did this

if you put all of based god's serious tracks on one album you'd have like the best ny rap album of the past few years

it's kind of weird to me that even the smarter takes on this whole thing seem to lay the obnoxious LOLZ reception he got almost wholly at the feet of the audience itself as if Lil B's music and his presentation of it never actively encouraged that kind of engagement. and the idea that projecting a kind of super-positive motivational speaker/philosopher persona can't be in and of itself kind of a schtick really ignores the existence of Andrew W.K.

See, I think the idiot savant element of Lil B is hard to properly explain, but I think there is some element of that in him, and I'm speaking as a huge Based God fan. And it plays into the is-B-putting-us-on aspect of the discussion. I don't think B is stupid, and I think there is some element of self-awareness to the whole self-help persona. I think he courts it to an extent, but here's the kicker—while B might be self-aware and acknowledge that it might be silly, it doesn't lessen the message. You can be ironic (not that B is ironic) AND sincere; you can joke but still be serious about "treating everyone like babies."

heiswagger (rennavate), Thursday, 12 April 2012 19:44 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i think he definitely believes in what he's saying, and it's perfectly OK to couch an honest message in humor or knowing absurdity, lots of great artists have. it just seems like bordering on willfully obtuse to act like anyone who came there to snicker and shout "thank you based god" is callously stomping over a serious event that more well behaved audience members went to witness with zero irony or rubbernecking intended.

some dude, Thursday, 12 April 2012 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

totally otm

i mean this was LIL B GIVING A LECTURE AT NYU, there was a 0% chance it wasnt going to be awkward

♆ (gr8080), Thursday, 12 April 2012 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I agree there. But I'm sure there were SOME who did go there just to snicker at Lil B. Basically, it's complicated... but that feels like a cop-out? But yeah, why can't it be a sincere event but still funny? I do think that's a very precarious balance to find, an extremely fine line to walk.

heiswagger (rennavate), Thursday, 12 April 2012 20:02 (fourteen years ago)

it can't be a sincere event because anyone selling the kind of hippie dippy platitudes he's selling without any weirdness or lolz would not fill a room with NYU students

some dude, Thursday, 12 April 2012 20:06 (fourteen years ago)

u dont think the dalai lama would fill a room w/ nyu students?
