I certainly like Bowie.

But in addition, does anyone on ILM dislike Super Furry Animals?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 6 January 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Um, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but saying you don't like David Bowie, especially saying you actually dislike David Bowie, given his MASSIVE influence on music and other assorted social implications (i.e. don't think for a second that DB didn't single-handedly cut a serious chunk of anti-gay preconceptions out of mainstream rock radio in his career), is kind of like saying you're really not all that with it, know what I mean? It's ok if you don't, but, you know, you're saying a lot of other things there, too.

It's like saying "I don't get Kraftwerk". The only response to that is I bet you don't get a lot of things...

jsoulja (jsoulja), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:15 (twenty years ago)

I try to get into Bowie every now and then, but I get rather bored with the music.

If I want glam I go T. Tex instead. If I want proto-new wave: I go Kevin Ayers and Robert Wyatt and Eno and Roxy Music. If I want theatrical art-rock I go Peter Hammill and Vandergraaf. If I want a record that is better proto-punk than Bowie I go Nadir's Last Chance. If I want weird psych-folk then, again, I go Tyrannosaurus Rex or even Tim Buckley. If I want orchestral, showtune weirdness then I go Scott Walker. If I want the best street-wise rock I go VU's Loaded. If I ever want guitar madness then I go the Sweet Sister Ray bootleg. Not to mention Alex Harvey, Steve Harley, Alice Cooper, the Cockettes, and Jobriath all fit in here somewhere.

Call us folks who don't suck Bowie's dick clueless but everywhere you turn are artists with greater vision than Bowie whom he cannibalized so he could turn himself into some mythical rock star legend.

As for the the "gay issue" so to speak, the Cockettes are super-esoteric but they challenged anti-gay stereotypes more radically than Bowie ever did.

i hate them a LOT.

xxpost - I don't know what I'm saying other than there are a lot of things I prefer to Bowie from every style and period he belongs to. I get him just fine, just not that into it. You could fit every Bowie song I like on one CD and probably still have some space left. And I'd play that CD once every 3 years.

I only dislike Super Furry Animals a little.

TRG (TRG), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:39 (twenty years ago)

when has david bowie ever had fun?

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:40 (twenty years ago)

(serious question)

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:41 (twenty years ago)

i'm overstating my case up there, since i own and really, really like several bowie albums. there's a little devil's advocate in that post. i don't hate him. but he's boring much of the time and even his two disc hits comp really starts to suck ass after the early-'80s. i think his place in the canon is overstated to a large degree but then again that goes for the beatles and the stones and hendrix and all those canon guys.

gear (gear), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:50 (twenty years ago)

my mom hates ac/dc :(

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:52 (twenty years ago)

i just went through this whole thing and didn't see sly and the family stone, which is odd. but now that geir's here that might get shot down.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:58 (twenty years ago)

No Jackson 5 either.

Ok, this is pretty much spot on, and he's admitted as much, but that's part of his brilliance. Musicians are almost always the product of their influences- it's what influences they choose and how they build from them that defines their greatness. Bowie's choice of influences were exceptional, and in the process of chasing them he created his own unique vision.

As for the the "gay issue" so to speak, the Cockettes are super-esoteric but they challenged anti-gay stereotypes more radically than Bowie ever did.

Yeah but they never cracked mainstream pop and rock radio the way Bowie did. Disco-bashing, gun rack sporting, "Stones Rule!" "Stairway To Heaven is the best song EVER!" guys grew up listening to Bowie tracks and still loved him enough to keep him in that arena, despite all those rumors that he and Mick Jagger were playing leap frog, despite the fact that DB's stage persona had some serious ponce leanings.

jsoulja (jsoulja), Friday, 6 January 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

CCR? Beefheart?

TRG (TRG), Friday, 6 January 2006 19:29 (twenty years ago)

It's possible to "understand" Bowie and still think he sucks, ya know.

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 6 January 2006 19:38 (twenty years ago)

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 6 January 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 6 January 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:39 (twenty years ago)

James Brown
Velvet Underground
Broken Social Scene--just kidding

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:43 (twenty years ago)

I do have to admit, though I'm not really a fan, that it's hard to hate Bob Marley.

Hate Bob Marley fans? There's nothing easier....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:45 (twenty years ago)

All right, so we're back to Eno and CCR.

And yeah, I've never meant anyone who doesn't like Cash.

TRG (TRG), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Re Marley, scroll up to June 27

TRG (TRG), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Eno is tainted by Bono.
Disqualified!

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

whatever - he was barely even a performing musician when he was producing u2.

M.I.A.?

(Jumps in getaway car!)

TRG (TRG), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:56 (twenty years ago)

has somebody mentioned the Talking Heads?

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:08 (twenty years ago)

There be lots of contrarian, irascible sonsabitches on this board, so I find the premise of this thread quixotic in the extreme.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:12 (twenty years ago)

SOMEbody got a word-of-the-day calendar this christmas!!!

jsoulja (jsoulja), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:17 (twenty years ago)

Wow- I never knew Lee Perry hates on Bob Marley. That does it for me- I gotta go with Lee Perry....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

If I had to pick one, though, my money is on Johnny Cash. Truly, who has the heart to hate on the dead guy?

xpost- phear my word powah

o. nate (onate), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

lee perry may hate on bob marley, but he also produced my favorite BM&W song, "mr brown," and he also burned his own studio down.

im not saying he's not awesome, but he probably says a lot of things.

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:21 (twenty years ago)

my money is on Johnny Cash

while i certainly dont hate cash, i am SO SICK of hearing about him right now (flashback to 2004's ray charles adulation/backlash), ill veto him.

CONTRARIAN

o. nate (onate), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:23 (twenty years ago)

i explained it carefully! i like a lot of his stuff, but i just cant get motivated to support this guy when all of his mostly-same sounding (usually good, sometimes really great) music has saturated american popular culture for like 2 months.

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Is it too early to pronounce CCR the winner?

TRG (TRG), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

im getting out of here! CCR wins in my mind!

don't start a RYE-OTT! (plsmith), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Stand up to the crowd! Who cares what they think. If you like something, it shouldn't matter whether everyone else does or not. Who is more of a creature of the crowd: the one who sheepishly follows the crowd taste, or the one who always has a knee-jerk reaction against it?

xpost: i'll go along with ccr

o. nate (onate), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Run! I'm right behind ya!

TRG (TRG), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

There will never be a winner. Shangri-Las still comfortably loved.

Billy Pilgrim (Billy Pilgrim), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)
