Other Only Ones stuff I have :

Peel Sessions (fantastic!)
Remains (not fun)
Live At The BBC (alright)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 7 June 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I have (otherwise of the single)

Peel sessions CD
The 'story' video.
And a book 'homme fatale' or some such.

I notice how book and vid both end with 'the new stuff is fantastic' i.e. about to come out (and in both cases had to wait what, ten years and a heartthrobs team up?)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 7 June 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

AGAP was released 14 April 1978, so shortly after that...I love Only Ones to distraction, although I'll be the first to admit that they didn't fulfil their potential on the albums...Has anyone heard the album they supposedly recorded for CBS of covers (apparently called Hits Hits Hits) in response to their lack of chart action and their label's subsequent frustration? Maybe the demos don't exist.
I think Perrett's solo stuff is terrific, too. So classic, then, apart from giving the Manics too many riffs and solos.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Monday, 7 June 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the influence on the Manics is obvious (the hairstyle, the solos, the chiffon). There was a compilation out in about '92 (The Immortal Story?). Got into them around this time. The Peel Sessions is the definitive stuff though. Most of the studio output does not live up to it.

Robert Moore (treble), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I came across what appears to be a complete list of every known demo, recording session, single, album, compliation, bootleg, etc. etc. that Peter Perrett's known to have been involved with when I was trawling the web earlier; and I can't see any mention of a covers album on there....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Bugger.

As you've probably realised, that bit in intalics in my last post was actually supposed to be a link.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I read it as, you were trying to squeeze one out hoping no-one would notice, in the middle of your sentence.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Woke up sticky?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 7 June 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think he meant that kind of squeezing.

southern lights (southern lights), Monday, 7 June 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Peels Sessions is my favourite Only Ones album, where they sound much more raw and stripped down than on the 'proper' albums. Also have a live album where he doesn't reccommend getting married to anybody and which has an ace version of the Big Sleep on it. All the studio albums were pretty good and I'll always love Remains.

POO? Erm, well, Flowers Die.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

'Prisoners', on the Peel Sessions LP, is one of my very favourite Only Ones tracks. I read somewhere that a studio version of it exists, but I'm not sure if it's available anywhere and if it's as good as the Peel version.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the studio version of Prisoners is on Remains.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Thursday, 10 June 2004 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Best rhyme Perret ever wrote: "Taking drugs is one thing we have in common / That can help overcome the language problem."

how about 'I love my mother but i wouldn't want to have sex with her'

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 11 August 2006 10:39 (nineteen years ago)

Umpteenth vote for The Peel Sessions.

Ruud Haarvest (Ken L), Friday, 11 August 2006 10:42 (nineteen years ago)

it is nice to hear Another Girl on the tv every ad break at the moment, even if they do mangle the ending.

Koogy Yonderboy (koogs), Friday, 11 August 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)

That pre-OO Morning Glory LP is one of ther things I have but have never listened to. How does it rate? (And yeah, I should just listen to it tonight, but my in box is so full.)

nickn (nickn), Friday, 11 August 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

I honestly thought Peter Perrett died years ago.

Son of Spam (noodle vague), Friday, 11 August 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

Kill anyone who says "Dud".

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 11 August 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know if anybody will. They seem to be off the ILM radar, except for the extended Reading massive and a few others.

Ruud Haarvest (Ken L), Friday, 11 August 2006 20:30 (nineteen years ago)

They are wonderful!

"Another girl another planet" seems very incongruous in that phone company ad. Doesn't sit well with the bright and cheery visuals and the bright and cheery vibe they are hoping to give off at all.

Bidfurd (Bidfurd), Friday, 11 August 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

Well, did anyone see them on Jools Holland last night?

A very wonky version of AGAP, but still magnificent to see them again. Vocals were VERY dodgy, both Perrett's and Perry and Mair's backing vocals. The performance was pretty energetic though. Great tone from John's magnificently battered olympic white Strat, although he simplified the middle solo a bit (to accomodate for aging fingers?) He's still pretty much my favourite guitarist anyway. Perrett was playing a horrible PRS (ugh!) instead of his Tele and Mair was playing a very unusual Les Paul bass. Mike Kellie looked exactly the same, and as you'd expect, played like a God.

They'll be on Saturday's show doing 2 songs I should expect.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

Man, I would love to see that. I guess it'll show up over on the Ovation channel in a few years.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

I saw them live last year. Good. Not loud enough though.

Tom D., Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

Classic, if only : for Years they would say "he doesn't look forty" in a good way. Now he looks like a biltong.

I suspected as much as on that old VHS video documentary he was interviewed with a backing light...

Mark G, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

Kind of annoying that you can't find this thread using the "Thread Search" option.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah but google came up trumps.

Biltong - yes, sadly.

There's supposed to be a new album out later in the year according to Mojo.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 2 April 2008 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

He is the portrait of Keith Richards in Keith Richards loft.

OK, I'll stop now.

CLASSIC.

chromecassettes, Monday, 27 May 2013 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

I listened to the Special View comp recently and still prefer the Peel Sessions by a wide margin.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 27 May 2013 21:05 (thirteen years ago)

peel sessions CD is definitely my fave by them.

tylerw, Monday, 27 May 2013 21:06 (thirteen years ago)

The Peel Sessions are the whole of the law.

Oulipo Traces (on a Cigarette) (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 27 May 2013 21:32 (thirteen years ago)

Dud. Can't stand them, and I don't want to hear 'Another Girl Another Planet' ever a-fucking-gain, tbh.

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 27 May 2013 21:34 (thirteen years ago)

bummer.

chromecassettes, Monday, 27 May 2013 22:52 (thirteen years ago)

only problem with them is that they don't have that song!

is this song really popular/ubiquitous in the UK?

tylerw, Friday, 13 December 2013 17:29 (twelve years ago)

Was on an TV advert for a while. It's fairly well known, I suppose.

Man, there are lots of covers of "Another Girl, Another Planet" on YouTube. Including one by the Libertines with Peter Perrett himself singing.

Got Your Money Changes Everything (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 20 March 2017 00:14 (nine years ago)

I guess a bunch of them probably were inspired by a Blink 182 version.

Phew, was fearing PP RIP.

Ongar Is An Energy (Tom D.), Monday, 20 March 2017 09:20 (nine years ago)

Reading 'Squeeze: Song by Song' at the moment and discovered that Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze was also in an early incarnation of The Only Ones and even lived with Perrett. Perrett hooked them up with Miles Copeland got them their first deal.

Dan Worsley, Monday, 20 March 2017 09:52 (nine years ago)

He plays on some songs on "Remains".

Ongar Is An Energy (Tom D.), Monday, 20 March 2017 10:02 (nine years ago)

Did not know any of that, interesting. Was that early version actually known as Peter and the Pets?

Got Your Money Changes Everything (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 20 March 2017 10:18 (nine years ago)

I recently acquired a good copy of England's Glory, which is Perret's 1973 album with Harry Kakoulli of Squeeze, including the aforementioned "Peter And The Pets" song. An interesting mix of glam and pre-punk!

Fastnbulbous, Monday, 20 March 2017 19:00 (nine years ago)

That's what I'm told, but vox demotivates me even to check those Peel tracks posts. Speaking of Squeeze, they're gonna tour w Psy Furs.

The old compilation “immortal story” is very good, but I love the voice. “The beast” is my fave but the Peel version is definitely better.

Chuck_Tatum, Wednesday, 17 May 2023 04:19 (three years ago)

I put the 1st CD of the Sanctuary 2CD on and my player refused to play it. Need to fix player still.
Otherwise would have that first l.p. and a half on rotation this week.
Do enjoy those first 2 anyway and whatever live stuff I've heard. Guitar gets more ballroom patchy live QMS like in places.
Perret wound up being sent to school at Bancrofts which was across the road from my grandparents. I think he came from the other side of London though.

Stevo, Wednesday, 17 May 2023 06:13 (three years ago)

2CD set is Why Don't You Kill Yourself on Edsel not Sanctuary. Pretty good though either way.

Stevo, Wednesday, 17 May 2023 06:16 (three years ago)

If you don't like Peter Perrett's voice you're not going to get very far with the Only Ones.

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Wednesday, 17 May 2023 06:28 (three years ago)

Well maybe---in more recent times, I've learned how to listen around the singer when I like the band well enough to try, and these musos did sound better when I tried Special View on a better stereo than mine. What the hell, I might like him better now too.

dow, Thursday, 18 May 2023 02:08 (three years ago)

Special View is a great place to start, who says otherwise?
