William Bloody Swygart, Thursday, 28 August 2008 06:56 (seventeen years ago)

That's my evening sorted then.

(One thing that doesn't seem to be mentioned in the 1Xtra = ghettoisation argument is the interests of the presumably sizeable 1Xtra audience with no interest in sitting through The Hoosiers and Alphabeat while waiting for a song they want to hear).

Matt DC, Thursday, 28 August 2008 08:19 (seventeen years ago)

I seriously have a crush on John Legend.

Turangalila, Thursday, 28 August 2008 08:22 (seventeen years ago)

i want to bump 'nuh linga' quite a lot more up my list, been jamming it solidly since yesterday. plus i have belatedly realised it's the dance usain bolt did after the 100m!!! totes awesome.

(One thing that doesn't seem to be mentioned in the 1Xtra = ghettoisation argument is the interests of the presumably sizeable 1Xtra audience with no interest in sitting through The Hoosiers and Alphabeat while waiting for a song they want to hear).

there is an easy solution to that - don't play the fucking hoosiers or alphabeat at all. no one with ears has any interest in sitting through them.

lex pretend, Thursday, 28 August 2008 08:47 (seventeen years ago)

Hoosiers and Alphabeat are Radio 2 material really.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 August 2008 08:55 (seventeen years ago)

i keep meaning to post to this thread.

Mark G, Thursday, 28 August 2008 09:10 (seventeen years ago)

'Boyfriend' is better than most of the stuff on here. I'm white supremacist btw.

blueski, Thursday, 28 August 2008 09:21 (seventeen years ago)

Useful Google-friendly info there.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 August 2008 09:29 (seventeen years ago)

I'm voting for Lloyd, if only for his excellent rapport with Tim Westwood - so SO much great stuff here though!

2for25, Thursday, 28 August 2008 10:40 (seventeen years ago)

Damn, yeah, the Westwood/Lloyd show last Saturday was total classic radio and one for the time capsule - BLACK PUDDING! CASH MY CHEQUE!

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 August 2008 10:43 (seventeen years ago)

Why are the racists at Radio 1 not playing Elephant Man's excellent version of "No Air" called "No Queer"?

Raw Patrick, Thursday, 28 August 2008 11:46 (seventeen years ago)

it's a lovely ditty about how he's just recovered from a fit of nausea so yeah can't see the harm

blueski, Thursday, 28 August 2008 11:51 (seventeen years ago)

In fact the new Elephant Man boss waxing is entitled "No Quair" and describes his frustration at being unable to find any of the works of Lewis Grassic Gibbon in Peckham Library, south-east London.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 28 August 2008 12:14 (seventeen years ago)

(bumping this thread cos it looks awesome and to remind myself to investigate the links over the weekend)

Jeff W, Friday, 29 August 2008 17:50 (seventeen years ago)

God, I've really not listened to this station enough this year. Have gone through a few of these this morning, and my favourite of the bunch might well have been Top 40 sensations J Majik & Wickaman - really got me bouncing and chirpy. "Unknown Number" is also quite the monster; "Green Light" and "Pretty Please" are charming to a quite illegal level; I think I might need to listen to the Roll Deep and Wookie a bit more - both rather interesting; and Sway is still quite the mountain of charisma, albeit that this song isn't really saying anything other than that the feller starts the week on Sunday, which is always nice to see.

William Bloody Swygart, Saturday, 30 August 2008 10:21 (seventeen years ago)

In fact the new Elephant Man boss 'waxing' is entitled "No Hair" and describes his bald scrotum.

Alan, Monday, 1 September 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 1 September 2008 23:01 (seventeen years ago)

N-Dubz or John Legend. Can't decide. Both are great.

Lots of other good things linked to on this thread that I've not heard before too. Thanks, WBS.

Jeff W, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

"Sway, Harry Shotta, Sneakbo, Sincere, Lady Leshurr, No Lay, Mic Righteous, Ratlin, Scrufizzer & Paigey - Cakey"

this should be:

Sway, Harry Shotta, Sneakbo, Sincere, Lady Leshurr, No Lay, Mic Righteous, Ratlin, Scrufizzer & Paigey Cakey - 10+

(a tribute to 1Xtra's 10th birthday) (it's not very good and is wayyy too long)

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 10 September 2012 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

no different to anyone else in ignoring that dire charity case "feature" tbf

'crazy song' is aight, c4 has my support but that song kinda overplays the twee

fave is probably... uh the syron's quite nice? also played out though. fuck it, baauer i guess

anyway yes, horrific list

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 10:13 (thirteen years ago)

Are we really FOUR YEARS on from Bongo Jam/Do You Mind/In The Air already? ;_;

Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 10:22 (thirteen years ago)

the tulisa track is horrendous.

aren't 1xtra sailing close to the wind in terms of fulfilling bbc trust's need for each station to provide a distinct service. that list looks quite radio 1, unless r1 is just going to revert fully to crap bands covering each other's tunes.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 10:25 (thirteen years ago)

you have a point but in part it's because R1/the charts have moved closer to 1Xtra's output, which i'd argue is a good thing

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 10:32 (thirteen years ago)

I suppose it's because British pop culture in general has moved much closer to 1xtra than it was four years ago. On paper they look similar but the station is (just) distinctive enough when you listen to it. If we were in a peak period for indie there'd be a fair amount of overlap between the Radio 1 and 6music playlists as well.

(xpost - what Tracer said)

Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 10:33 (thirteen years ago)

1xtra as breeding ground for r1 was a great move but this is just throwing the baby out with the bathwater

fucking "simulcasts", pure hack n slash costcutting masked as brand integration & streamlined unity of purpose

― r|t|c, Monday, 28 May 2012 16:48 (3 months ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

yeah i can't think 1Xtra feels too great now about being 1's "sister station"

― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 28 May 2012 17:06 (3 months ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

thing is 1xtra ought to be the sister station though, hauling it out of its ghetto and positioning the station like that was its great success of recent years - and besides, the landscape has changed and blurred enough so the two's remit has grown closer anyway. (you could even argue 1xtra has had a direct role in shaping that). but a sister should have a vibrant life of her own and not be hostage to the brother the way it looks like it'll be now.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 11 September 2012 10:45 (thirteen years ago)

i guess i wonder if the above justification (matt's and tracer's) would wash in the current bbc environment, r1/1xtra both seem to be the focus of a lot of negative internal attention, ime.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 11 September 2012 10:47 (thirteen years ago)

the answer may surprise you

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 26 June 2013 14:57 (twelve years ago)

hmm probably tallies closest with target. jam would have heard and liked but not chosen all of those, if he likes s chu it'll be on the sly. for it to be cameo is more plausible than you'd maybe think but still you'd expect trashier. as this is probably a trick question though... i'd like it to be trev but i'm maybe getting a woman's touch. sarah jane crawford?
