Beyond was a dud for me. By numbers, lacking in tunes.

dino jr. is sort of the best depression band, in that sort of teenage way in which depression feels huge and vast and empty yet you don't really have the desire or even ability to express what your feelings even are, it's sort of numb feeling, yet it's very intense, a sort of like a jet engine on nyquil

Good to see they didn't do the typical split until the next greatest hits tour reunion. I loved Beyond when it came out, now I just kind of like it. It beat expectations, and was definitely an improvement over J's solo stuff. Live they were great. I'm looking forward to this.

kinda more curious to hear the stuff that isn't the same; them dropping a cello on the last record etc. his frazzled sounding songs are great. i hear this record is very lou.

none of the setups in my home are suitable to playing dinosaur mp3s at appropriate volume, so i'm not hearing this properly, but it sounds great so far

it's the same thing all over again,no risks, which is good and not so good at the same time.

I would be maybe more concerned about that if D, Jr. had stayed together all these years, and never developed their sound. OTOH, after breaking up, and given their age, I'm pretty amazed at the fire and energy of their new stuff (only heard one single from the new disc, tho).

the dinosaur jams are obviously pretty much straightahead dinosaur, but it seems like it's got more of a kinda slinky blues thing going on, see you and said the people. i was skipping through looking for the frazzled ballad because i got lost was so sweet.

Shit, this is a lot better than I'd expected. Pieces is terrific.

I haven't gotten further than Pieces yet, it's so great I keep pressing repeat :-(

the guitars are so great on this, love "pieces" and "plans"

the guitars feel like they're mixed way too high, which is something i would not say about other DJr records. so far not feeling it as much as Beyond.

well i got it off eMusic so i know that's not why it sounds 'off' to me

i like it a lot. agree about Plans and Pieces, maybe some other i forgot. the sound of the guitars does get a little irritating after a while, but since i was listening to mp3's i doubt it had anything to do with wrong mixing anyway.

i have lots of other Dinosaur Jr. albums on mp3 where i can actually hear the drums, though.

This may be the first cd i ever buy based on the cover art. Utterly spectacular.

You know what record is really good? The J Mascis solo record Several Shades of Why.

Farm is great.

New LP is greater.

surprised there wasn't more discussion of i bet on sky itt. one of my 2012 favorites. love the relative gentleness and thickets of softened fuzz. maybe now that the reunion novelty's worn off, it's easy to take them for granted. they deserve better. PUT A RING ON IT.

yeah it's an awesome album, could very well be my favorite of the reunion LPs. really looking forward to the Dino Jr. tracks poll.

Thanks, this thread. Haven't listened to Dinosaur Jr for probably 20 years, but like Wire, I hadn't heard that they were 'good again'.

Just bought 'Farm' on the strength of 'Beyond', so will see how that goes, but 'Beyond' seemed like probably the most consistent record of theirs I've heard. The old ones had great moments, but a bunch of daft moments too.

Also, kudos to having the Jolly Green Giant on the sleeve for "Farm". Never much liked Sebad'oh, but can't help thinking that his return injected some sort of spark.
