hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 4 July 2005 08:02 (twenty years ago)

yeah, this song is all right! i sometimes see one of the guys from harvey danger at shows in chicago. i guess he lives here now.

an interesting taking sides might be this vs. "semi-charmed life."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 4 July 2005 08:06 (twenty years ago)

"semi-charmed life" is a perfect example of a song i probably "hated" when it came out because i thought i was supposed to or something, but really sounds great now.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 4 July 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

i don't think i ever actually hated "flagpole sitta," tho, because i was able to appreciate it as a novelty/one-hit wonder (whereas third eye blind signalled the horrible mediocrity of mass culture, i guess?)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 4 July 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

gay gay gay buttfucking gay vs. gay gay buttfuckin gay

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 4 July 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

i also enjoyed the three seconds of "flagpole sitta" featured in the film disturbing behavior (which i saw at the dollar theater becuz i had a crush on katie holmes).

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 4 July 2005 08:10 (twenty years ago)

WTF @ U ALL. this thread is a joke right?

am0n (am0n), Thursday, 16 November 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

What a terrible song/band.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 16 November 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

you know what? the song/band ain't so bad. Harvey Danger was alright; not the greatest, but far from terrible. this song ruled alternative radio's playlist (along w/ the irritating "Rockefeller Skank") the summer it came out (1998). it was probably the last time that alternative music was fun and not-so contrived. not long after that things went bad; very bad in fact. Korn, Limp Bizkit, and all that horrible shit took over (at least here in LA on KROQ). w/ the exception of The Strokes/White Stripes explosion, things haven't been so fun since. give me Harvey Danger or Marcy Paygorund over Korn and Limp Bizkit (or Fallout Boy) any day.

Robert Acosta (Rob 77), Thursday, 16 November 2006 23:09 (nineteen years ago)

Five terrible bands.

LOL at the juxtaposition between this thread and the Ott vs Decemberists Girlfriend thread

The Android Cat (Dan Perry), Thursday, 16 November 2006 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

I remember some review that claimed "Flagpole Sitta" was a grunge version of The Association, which is a fine way to define the genius of the track.

The Dusty Baker Selection (Charles McCain), Friday, 17 November 2006 00:09 (nineteen years ago)

Cool lyrics too. Forgot about the masturbation ref in the first verse.

I had visions, I was in them
I was looking into the mirror,
To see a little bit clearer,
The rottenness and evil in me,
Fingertips have memories
Mine can't forget the curves of your body,
And when i feel a bit naughty,
I run it up the flagpole and see,
Who salutes(But no one ever does)

I'm not sick but I'm not well,
and I'm so hot, cause I'm in hell!

Been around the world and found
That only stupid people are breeding,
The cretins cloning and feeding,
And I don't even own a TV
Put me in the hospital for nerves
And then they had to commit me,
You told them all i was crazy,
They cut off my legs now i'm an amputee,
(God damn you)

I'm not sick but I'm not well,
And I'm so hot, cause I'm in hell
I'm not sick but I'm not well
And it's a sin to live so well

I wanna publish zines,
And rage against machines,
I wanna pierce my tongue
It doesn't hurt, it feels fine,
The trivial sublime,
I'd like to turn off time
And kill my mind,
You kill my mind,

Paranoia paranoia!
Everybody's coming to get me,
Just say you never met me,
I'm runnin' underground with the moles,
(Digging holes)
Hear the voices in my head
I swear to God it sounds like they're snoring!
But if you're bored then you're boring,
The agony and the irony, they're killing me

I'm not sick but I'm not well
and I'm so hot cause I'm in hell
I'm not sick but I'm not well
and it's a sin to live this well

One, two, three, four!
(Guitar Solo)

The Dusty Baker Selection (Charles McCain), Friday, 17 November 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

I always get this song mixed up with The New Radicals' "You Only Get What You Give", and then I'm really disappointed when the line about Beck and Hanson never comes.

Good-Time Slim, Uncle Doobie, and the Great 'Frisco Freak-Out (sixteen sergeants, Friday, 17 November 2006 00:29 (nineteen years ago)

when I was younger and I heard this on the radio is made me cringe in a similar way that the hold steady does now.

pernicus (pernicus), Friday, 17 November 2006 01:10 (nineteen years ago)

Marcy Playground??? Is it POSSIBLE to get worse than "Sex and Candy"? Coz like, Korn and LB and them, they make really really really really godawful music, but they're still (debatably) like actual songs.... "Sex and Candy" was some guy playing the laziest drum beat ever and a guy just mumbling on top of it; and somehow it got major radio airplay most likely for being about sex. And candy. Which all people love.

one year passes...

Kind of wondering if the arrival of "Peep Show" on Netflix streaming in the US will re-spark interest in this song? I don't quite know how, but I managed to *never* hear it until a few months ago. Catchy. I do remember seeing the first CD in used bins all the time, but that's it.

dlp9001, Saturday, 25 August 2012 17:05 (thirteen years ago)

the stations that played the song in the '90s still play it all the time, although people don't listen to them as much anymore.

7 years of pussy for prison riot (some dude), Saturday, 25 August 2012 17:12 (thirteen years ago)

It's really pretty decent. Dandy Warhols were both smarter and stupider at the same time, which is a neat trick to pull off. Semisonic vs. Harvey Danger? Though Semisonic's best album doesn't come out until a few years later.

dlp9001, Saturday, 25 August 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

God, this is the worst song ever.

formerly EDB (ed.b), Saturday, 25 August 2012 17:45 (thirteen years ago)

it came on the radio while we were driving home like an hour ago and my wife said "i should buy this song for my ipod" and i looked at her with mild horror

some dude, Sunday, 26 August 2012 00:39 (thirteen years ago)

Maybe it depends on whether you associate the song with late 90's alt rock or with the best sitcom (apparently) in the history of the world? I dunno, but I like it...

dlp9001, Sunday, 26 August 2012 01:08 (thirteen years ago)

I like it -- the combination of nerdgoof 90s style plus loud distorted guitar and bass noise going on constantly in the background appeals to me. The lyrics might be harder to swallow if the guitars weren't so noisy, but that not being the case, this is a very cool and unique pop song.

Three Word Username, Sunday, 26 August 2012 09:53 (thirteen years ago)

Never heard it before Peep Show. Was incredibly drunk on my birthday last year and went to a US vs UK 90s night (it was awesome) and they played this and I was in such a state that I couldn't work out why they were playing the theme music to the best sitcom in the history of the world :D

kinder, Sunday, 26 August 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

There's a feedback/noise solo buried during the last chorus that no one's mentioned yet... prolly my favorite part.

billstevejim, Sunday, 26 August 2012 17:27 (thirteen years ago)

vg just be glad your brain didn't choose this song as its permanent wake-up alarm. I don't honestly think "Sex and Candy" would have been an improvement but I never got the choice.

Lily Dale, Tuesday, 24 May 2022 03:55 (four years ago)

It could be worse, the “come my lady come come my lady” song was only a couple of years after this.

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 24 May 2022 04:01 (four years ago)

Or the “when I’m horny like thirsty she’s a cool drink of water” song.

^ Interesting.

I may not have heard this in full since before Peep Show was a thing. Watching the video now (for the first time, IIRC) I just keep hearing where the Peep Show edits AREN'T.

I really don't hate it. Judge me harshly if you must.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Tuesday, 24 May 2022 06:40 (four years ago)

Go, my lady

Legalize Suburban Benches (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 24 May 2022 10:45 (four years ago)

"butterfly" >> this

(not really but idk, i'm generally happier to hear it nowadays than "flagpole sitta" tho)

dyl, Tuesday, 24 May 2022 14:14 (four years ago)

what was the genre of pseudo-inspirational rock-infused hip hop that had lame rhymes that seemed like cliches out of a middle school English class?

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 24 May 2022 14:17 (four years ago)

I like both this song and "come my lady," sorry not sorry

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 24 May 2022 14:23 (four years ago)

But not "Sex and Candy" really

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 24 May 2022 14:23 (four years ago)

the only Marcy Playground song worth a shit is A Cloak of Elvenkind

Gymnopédie Pablo (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 24 May 2022 14:24 (four years ago)

(not sure that Todd in the Shadows video is a hate watch though, since Todd seems to be on the correct side of this debate)

― enochroot, Monday, May 23, 2022 8:12 PM

yeah, i regretted my wording as soon as i hit submit. i meant it's a good hate watch for folks like me who can't stand this song. todd is charming and informative, as always.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Tuesday, 24 May 2022 14:59 (four years ago)

of course “butterfly” is better than this, that song rules!!!!

brimstead, Tuesday, 24 May 2022 18:22 (four years ago)

Yeah, I like "Butterfly" (I don't think of it in the same "category," tho)

Bob Dylan's iconic Ray Ban sunglasses (morrisp), Tuesday, 24 May 2022 18:23 (four years ago)

eleven months pass...

At a party the other night, we did karaoke to both “Flagpole Sitta” and “Sex and Candy” (neither was my choice). They were both pretty fun!
