Yeah that image badly needed an odd sailboat-shaped spacecraft. I was really worried for a moment there

og (admrl), Thursday, 5 April 2012 17:31 (fourteen years ago)

the cover is a fractal that can be infinitely zoomed out

diamonddave85, Thursday, 5 April 2012 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

IIRC the second cover was by arik moonhawk roper

the late great, Thursday, 5 April 2012 18:46 (fourteen years ago)

who is no doubt a fan but i think more to the point kind of a "band bro"

the late great, Thursday, 5 April 2012 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

if roger dean is an honorary member of yes then arik roper is an honorary member of at least half the good stoner metal bands out there

the late great, Thursday, 5 April 2012 18:50 (fourteen years ago)

sadly it looks like he's removed a ton of his illustrations from his website, it's a much fancier website now but has way less of his art and a lot less of his early hand-drawn work which appeals to me more than his new oil painting style

i think this new cover must be by roper, too. craggy peaks, loose brush for the lines, basic look of those overgrown jawas and their weird dromedary. couldn't be anyone else.

yeah, feel the same, but he probably gets sick of people saying they liked his early stuff better. my favorite moonhawk:

I wish the second Sand Person wasn't doing the River Dance.

man, bummer to realize that Ned has me killfiled and didn't see my post four before his.

yeah, i thought that was a bit weird myself. his is bigger though.

better w/out the text

Disco Bob & MC Criminal (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 5 April 2012 21:57 (fourteen years ago)

i've never understood wtf this is thiough

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 5 April 2012 21:59 (fourteen years ago)

i think it's much worse w/out the "Sleep" text (dull painting, basically), but much improved w/out the retro-computerized "DOPESMOKER"

preternatural concepts concerning variances in sound and texture (contenderizer), Thursday, 5 April 2012 22:01 (fourteen years ago)

it is a picture of a mystical guy burning HEMP and also a HEMP sweater that you could wear while smoking HEMP and following the smoke to the RIFF-FILLED land

Image loading is turned off for me so I admit I did not see the earlier post of same.

in defense of the text on the new cover, this is pretty kick-ass on its own. sharp, simple and very strong. most graphically dynamic part of the design, imo.

it was intended as sarcasm, i had posted the full version of the whole foldout just before you did.

It's like tablature only more cryptic.

I also like hearing what Matt Pike said about playing in Sleep vs High on Fire. "I count a lot more when I play Sleep."

How's the remaster? I only have the "legit" release with the burning bush/hemp sweater cover.

Matt M., Friday, 11 May 2012 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

I've just ordered the CD + T-shirt + Poster combo. Am tempted to get a vinyl copy for the awesome artwork too.

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Friday, 11 May 2012 15:38 (fourteen years ago)

The remaster sounds pretty fantastic on CD, it's tastefully done. Hope to hear the LP soon.

A. Begrand, Friday, 11 May 2012 16:17 (fourteen years ago)

gotta say i'm not that into the reissue. it does sound a lot clearer but i think that basically just accentuates matt pike which pushes it into HoF hesher territory as opposed to the plodding doom territory the early mix sits comfortably in.

I only have the CD with the three-headed horse drawing. How am I doing sound/mix-wise?

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Friday, 11 May 2012 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

that list looks like a poll.

looking forward to seeing them twice this month. fuck they are so good live.

Jamie_ATP, Friday, 11 May 2012 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

I assume you mean HoF, right

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 11 May 2012 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

the first "dopesmoker" CD (three headed horse) is a different recording from the original "jerusalem" release. it is also louder and bassier than the original jerusalem release. i think it is not as "clear" in the mid- and high-range as the dopesmoker reissue, but like i said i prefer the original versions (both jerusalem and dopesmoker) to the new one

i think the one you have is actually my favorite jon

the late great, Friday, 11 May 2012 16:53 (fourteen years ago)

I assume Jamie means Sleep ... meaning he's going to ATP and Primavera, the lucky bastard. They *are* so good live...

Stormy Davis, Friday, 11 May 2012 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

wait Sleep has reunited?!

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 11 May 2012 17:02 (fourteen years ago)

yeah they do from time-to-time. they played a few shows in 2010

Stormy Davis, Friday, 11 May 2012 17:03 (fourteen years ago)

oh sans Hakius tho, I see

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 11 May 2012 17:03 (fourteen years ago)

Saw them two years ago at Brooklyn Masonic hall. I'm gonna invite a flaming here and say I don't like Al's sheer-rumble live sound. Call me a muso but I can see he's doing a lot of shit and I want to know what it is! Same went for the Shrinebuilder show.

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Friday, 11 May 2012 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, drummer from Neurosis drums on the live line-up. I saw them in, 2010 I guess, when they first started doing the live shows again. Bummed that I'm going to miss them this time. Positively titanic.

Matt M., Friday, 11 May 2012 17:15 (fourteen years ago)

They absolutely destroyed at Roadburn last month. I'd never seen Sleep in person before, and was floored by their two-hour set.

sounds like the gig i went to - Shrinebuilder

am0n, Friday, 11 May 2012 18:18 (fourteen years ago)

Ha yeah I see Alan N and myself saying the same thing there, too.

Hierophantiasis (Jon Lewis), Friday, 11 May 2012 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

its funny that it was still crappy even when they didn't have soundboard probs

am0n, Friday, 11 May 2012 19:33 (fourteen years ago)

anyone know what the hell hakius is up to these days?

the late great, Friday, 11 May 2012 20:10 (fourteen years ago)

i'm assuming some sort of organic farming / intentional community type of thing

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 12 May 2012 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

man so i have to admit i'm hearing things in "jerusalem" (vs. dopesmoker) that i never heard before

i guess that's common but this just feels really stark
