Heart of Stone has always been a favorite
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:18 (fourteen years ago)
those two are crucial early Jagger tracks for me. sort of like what Sympathy for the Devil/Let It Bleed were for the late 60's and Brown Sugar/Miss You for the 70's (I know that is chronologically flawed)
― gospodin simmel, Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:27 (fourteen years ago)
He really threw himself into his delivery in those songs, they have a real theatrical quality that I love
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:33 (fourteen years ago)
Just submitted! Almost forgot!
― da croupier, Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:36 (fourteen years ago)

speaking of early covers I love their "Cry to Me."
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:38 (fourteen years ago)
"She Said Yeah" is fierce
enjoying Steel Wheels a lot as I write fwiw
― Euler, Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:39 (fourteen years ago)
their Route 66 is one of my favorite things in life
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:41 (fourteen years ago)
I regret not giving the deep cuts on the albums I own on vinyl more of a listen (I never wear headphones when listening to LPs so they can blur compared to what I've got on CD), but with the Stones its easy to find 20 classics even if you haven't dragged the well.
― da croupier, Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:43 (fourteen years ago)
for sure
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:48 (fourteen years ago)
OK I sent my ballot
ranking the 20 was surprisingly easy
― Flat Of NAGLs (sleeve), Saturday, 31 March 2012 18:36 (fourteen years ago)
ballot's nearing completion & I notice that evidently I'm quite a fan of the songs that get blasted as misogynist, which I think isn't an entirely fair description but I prefer Mick's more acidic & focused lyrics, & I think women bring that out best.
― Euler, Saturday, 31 March 2012 18:42 (fourteen years ago)
I know I already linked up thread, but on that point there's some good discussion here: what is sexist exactly about the rolling stones' under my thumb?
no thread for "some girls" tho

I love some girls #secretshame
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 31 March 2012 19:14 (fourteen years ago)
some girls is great and hilarious!

there's some good discussion here: what is sexist exactly about the rolling stones' under my thumb?
yeah, good thread, if short - esp like kog@n's long post before the break
― preternatural concepts concerning variances in sound and texture (contenderizer), Saturday, 31 March 2012 19:20 (fourteen years ago)
and "some girls" is pretty damn funny, if o_0

good man, wonder how many we've got so far?

If anyone has lists longer than 1-20, when we get to posting our ballots please include your also-rans! I want any and all ILM deep cuts!
― Iago Galdston, Saturday, 31 March 2012 20:28 (fourteen years ago)
I'm very proud of my iconoclastic ballot; I'm pretty sure that today they're my 20 favorite Stone ballads.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 31 March 2012 20:29 (fourteen years ago)
er, songs. Ballads too!
haha. #1 on Alfred's ballot - "Out of Tears"
― tylerw, Saturday, 31 March 2012 20:31 (fourteen years ago)
^^^ forgot that one! It's not bad.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 31 March 2012 20:32 (fourteen years ago)
i can kind of remember how it goes.
― tylerw, Saturday, 31 March 2012 20:38 (fourteen years ago)
"worried about you" is still the late-stones ballad champ, but "out of tears" ain't bad

"Out of Tears" is lovely. Alfred and I will have terse words if he voted for "Streets of Love" though
― Eisbaerg Slim (some dude), Saturday, 31 March 2012 20:43 (fourteen years ago)
can neither confirm nor deny

^ Page solo on that is astonishing.
― Dancing with Mr. T (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 31 March 2012 21:22 (fourteen years ago)
They should turn up the drums and background vocals on that track, christ
― da croupier, Saturday, 31 March 2012 21:30 (fourteen years ago)
I appreciate the romantic appeal of Dirty Work to some, but I think the only "boomer legends trapped in gated drum-land" artifact I'm personally enamored of is Neil's Landing On Water.
― da croupier, Saturday, 31 March 2012 21:33 (fourteen years ago)
xpost yes. 13 seconds. sounds exactly like jimmy page. video handles this section poorly imo. "there's a guitar here so let's get some shots of keef and ronnie running around"
sorta agree with da croup on this one, though the the first 30 seconds are imo as powerful and ominous as anything they've done incl the intro to "gimme shelter."
― all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Saturday, 31 March 2012 21:34 (fourteen years ago)
Oof. That one actually makes me angry, since it's the brilliant Steve Jordan being gated. Said gating ruins this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NulUOzBkjA
― Dancing with Mr. T (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 31 March 2012 21:54 (fourteen years ago)
I don't mean Landing On Water is a genuine triumph, I just love how it sounds like an alternate reality where Crispin Glover played Crockett on Miami Vice.
― da croupier, Saturday, 31 March 2012 22:20 (fourteen years ago)
the Booming Gated Drums of Dirty Work don't sound like LAW or Never Let Me Down's or other purported period catastrophes, in part b/c Charlie isn't drumming for almost half the record (one of the Nevilles and Ronnie do the honors). It's what tiggers like Steve Lilywhite do best.
"One Hit" made my ballot.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 1 April 2012 00:07 (fourteen years ago)
Ballot sent!

their last American top 40 hit!
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 1 April 2012 00:58 (fourteen years ago)
btw if you guys wanna get a sense of how much Charlie, Keef, and Mick loathed each other in the mid eighties, watch this rehearsal footage, especially the gobsmacked journalist's response to Charlie's boredom.

oh jesus I had forgotten about Rock and a Hard Place. and I was so happy. Curse you Alfred
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 1 April 2012 01:02 (fourteen years ago)
wait wait wait is the choreographer Bruno from Dancing With the Stars? LOLOLOL
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 1 April 2012 01:04 (fourteen years ago)
I listened to Rock & a Hard Place today & didn't hate it as much as Gomper so it made the non-cut
― Euler, Sunday, 1 April 2012 01:05 (fourteen years ago)
they won't defend Steel Wheels as a hidden masterpiece but croup and ship, a couple years younger than me, came of age when its singles were the last time MTV gave the Stones saturation play.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 1 April 2012 01:09 (fourteen years ago)
it's likable enough
― Euler, Sunday, 1 April 2012 01:20 (fourteen years ago)
I liked "Mixed Emotions" enough to ask for the cassingle as a kid (wound up getting "rock and a hard place" instead, wah wah) though when I heard it again recently it sounded pretty damn weak.
― da croupier, Sunday, 1 April 2012 01:28 (fourteen years ago)
I just remember all those terrible music videos with Mick's pastel and primary color jackets
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 1 April 2012 01:30 (fourteen years ago)
at this point any exploration of albums after Tattoo You would be done for case study
