yeah, i find it weird that mick thought this could be a hit...can't remember what was on the b-side, but it was one of their monster hits I think...

jumping jack flash iirc
band of susans used to do a cover of it emphasising its droneyness

Listening to Brussels Affair (thanks to Tarfumes/Tylerw for recommendation) --- the Keys solo in "Can't Always Get What You Want" is so gorgeous, I wish it was on the original. My god.
also Keith doing 'Happy' made me very. Kinda feel like I should've rethought about voting for it. idk.

yeah contenderizer, i definitely hear some VU sound-wise. both "child" and a song like "all tomorrow's parties" channel something exotic, stoned and distant. lyrically and thematically, i can see how the California thing ties in. i mean, underlying VU's work was a certain street-swagger, self-awareness and poise, which gave even their most abstract songs a defined edge. the Stones obviously exhibited this too in a bunch of their songs, but there's something naive and idealistic about "child of the moon", which i find pretty charming. what is kind of surprising is that it was a calculated move on their part, because even if it was just a one-off of sorts, it sounds natural and inspired.

I've never really gotten all the way into the Stones like rock/pop fanatics are supposed to, so beyond the singles I mostly know Exile, Aftermath, Sticky Fingers and to a somewhat lesser extent Beggars & Let it Bleed. All terrific records of course, and Emotional Rescue was a pleasant Spotify surprise a couple weeks back, but I can't imagine omitting more than half a dozen of the tracks previously compiled on Hot Rocks, which I've loved to pieces since high school. Fucking dilettante, I know. But I wanna vote in this, so I guess I'll be that guy.

before you do vote, at least consider listening to some of the less well-known stuff posted itt. promise you won't regret it.

an all HOT ROCKS ballot would be frighteningly reasonable. but which of the 21 tracks would you cut?
― all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Friday, 30 March 2012 02:17 (fourteen years ago)
good question. looking at the tracklist now, i'd probably cut "honky tonk woman". maybe "get off of my cloud".
― charlie h, Friday, 30 March 2012 02:56 (fourteen years ago)
An all More Hot Rocks ballot would be fine challops.
― Mike Love Costume Jewelry on Etsy (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 30 March 2012 02:58 (fourteen years ago)
once you made the necessary cut/s, how would you ORDER said Hot Rocks tracks, that is the question
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:06 (fourteen years ago)
xpost suddenly reconsidering on ethical grounds whether to allow any ABKCO tracks on my ballot
― all yoga attacks are fire based (rogermexico.), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:17 (fourteen years ago)
Midnight Rambler and Can't Always Get would be easy cuts from a Hot Rocks ballot. Cutting eight songs from More Hot Rocks would be tougher.
― Whiney Houson (WmC), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:40 (fourteen years ago)
I voted Connection (though not #1)
― broom air, Friday, 30 March 2012 03:41 (fourteen years ago)
Also, as Xgau sez, Hot Rocks is for the people, More Hot Rocks is for specialists.
I'm a special people
― Whiney Houson (WmC), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:44 (fourteen years ago)
I hope "19th Nervous Breakdown" gets serious love in this.
― Mike Love Costume Jewelry on Etsy (C. Grisso/McCain), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:52 (fourteen years ago)

― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 03:54 (fourteen years ago)
Late voters! Love songs that work on multiple levels? Love Keith Richards's voice? Like humor that's kind of serious? Please consider:

I think the song is kind of creepy, and I like my Stones kinda creepy, to be honest.

JAGGER IS COMING
voted. yowza that was hard. probably leaned more towards greatest hits than deep cuts, really. the greatest hits are great!
― tylerw, Friday, 30 March 2012 16:58 (fourteen years ago)
they surely are
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 16:58 (fourteen years ago)
i definitely voted for some deep cuts but even some of their album tracks feel like ubiquitous timeless standards so it's a blurry line
― Eisbaerg Slim (some dude), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:00 (fourteen years ago)
yeah at this point, nothing from Sticky Fingers really feels like a "deep cut"...
― tylerw, Friday, 30 March 2012 17:05 (fourteen years ago)
I think I ended up with like, 5 Sticky Fingers tracks.
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 30 March 2012 17:06 (fourteen years ago)
