Oh yeah, checked album reviews: 3 stars in Q (when will those losers learn?) and 4 and a half in DJ (losing out to Riton for album of the month, lame!). I have finally caught up with you lot and the album will comfortably sit in my top 5 this year.

Great stuff anyway. "Chewing Gun" is kind of a flop in the UK. Too intelligent for the pop audiences, I guess (and, obviously, not "rock" enough for the indie audiences)

i don't think 'Chewing Gum' is really a flop - #25 is a good position esp. given the seeming lack of coverage support from leading stores and tv/radio. granted it sounds like it should've been bigger, and i maintain if it had been Rachel Stevens new single then top 5 at least.

Maybe. At least it has become a reasonable hit here in Norway. Hopefully, "Heartbeat" (which I suppose will be the next single) will perform better in the UK.

Annie first gained praise in the UK for her debut single on Norway's ultra cool Telle label, the Madonna sampling Erot composed "Greatest Hit" back in 1999 / 2000, but it's taken until 2004, with the release of "Chewing Gum", for her to really take off big style. Now Annie releases her debut album, "Anniemal" which includes many cheeky, chirpy pop songs, some with an 80s vibe, others more with hints of disco-not-disco. It includes the aforementioned singles and forthcoming "Heartbeat".

i can understand, in a way, why some people would find 'Chewing Gum' annoying. the first time i heard 'Genius Of Love' i was all 'what the hell is this crap?!' or maybe it was just the video annoying me because that song grew on my very quickly. maybe Annie will grow on some people - i find her so instant tho.

Oh, no way. 'Genius Of Love' is immediate. I first heard it as the (rewritten) for a fruit juice ad, like, 17 years ago, and I was hooked for life. And Mariah resold it to us barely 8 years ago.

'disco not disco' and that's filled with all the stuff used to be called future funk, or 'balearic'/'balearica' odd.

As for Annie, 'Me Plus One' MUST be the third single. It's the 2nd coming of 'Let's Hear It For The Boy'.

They called the band Was (Not Was). The name came from young Anthony Fagenson (Don’s son) who had a habit of attempting to describe opposites by adding “Not". So you have “blue, not blue” and of course “was, not was".

I think maybe there was one copy to be had in all of doncaster and it was tucked away behind lots of other things in hmv and £15.99! seems a lot to pay for a new release album but had to be done (also the postage-stamp-sized singles section in our HMV unexpectedly had The Knife so today was comparative HAUL, criticisms of Piccadilly Records = You Don't Know You're Born)

Anniemal = 4 out of 10 from me, I'm afraid. The 3 singles are far and away the best tracks, and I'm not particularly enamoured with those either ("My Heartbeat" is perhaps the best). Not a complete dud, but a misfire, for sure.
