Is SPIN really circling the drain?

i'm really ridiculously proud of our review section right now.

so nice to finally meet keith in nyc! i am a long time fan.

i'd be more proud if i were reviewing something HINT HINT

yeah I was impressed by the breadth of the section

whiney been reading some reviews off the Reviews hub page, some good stuff

one bit of (hopefully constructive) criticism:

when you're on the main Reviews hub, the reviews seem to be categorized in three ways: Critical Mass, Spin Essentials, and Worst New Music

however -- and this is especially the case with Critical Mass (the most common category) -- it's a bit frustrating/confusing not being able to tell before you click whether it's a full review or just one of the Twitter-style micro-reviews...I think it would be smart to call readers' attention to the long-form reviews in some way, or at least give them a way to tell which is which.

That was the issue in the loo, too. Loved the full-page concert photos, closer to Interview than Rolling Stone.

the current size/logo/artwork makes it looks like an issue of life magazine from 1970. i havent opened it yet. (as ive mentioned earlier i receive spin for free even though i never ordered it)

very very infrequently (maybe once or twice a year on Spin) one of these click-thru galleries will be compelling enough that i'll actually click thru. 100% of the rest of the time i will not read the article. it's not because i am taking a moral stand on it. it is because i am too lazy. this is one of those times.

er, that's maybe once or twice a year on Slate. i've never clicked thru on Spin.

I could just hug these guys for the guitarist article. So many upset Steve Lukather fans on the Jim Dunlop Guitar Products facebook page right now.

The Jam Master Jay at #10 kinda gives away that this is just informed trolling, and it's lazy that Jonathan Richman/David Byrne are ignored while Jerry Harrison gets a nod (ditto Corin Tucker/Mary Timony for Carrie Brownstein). But I do love that like 95% of the older guitarists are also in the SPIN alternative record guide. The new staff clearly respect the canon.

i like that list! as far as lists of that type go. the jerry harrison thing was odd -- seems to me him and byrne were equal in the heads guitar dept. would've put glenn mercer in there somewhere but that's just me.

To answer my own question re: Bailey, Google Books suggests dude was referenced once in 1989, 1996 & 2000 and TWICE in 1998.

i remember limp bizkit referencing him in 98, yeah.

That book got me into Sonny Sharrock, but I shifted away from the "tell me more, Byron Coley" side of it before I got around to hearing Chadbourne, Bailey or Fahey.

i got a little lol out of pretty much every multiple-guitarist band letting 2 guys have a shared entry on the list except "sorry, mike mccready, you shred too much, stone's gonna go it alone on this one"

i skipped the middle of the list so maybe i'm wrong but it seemed overly reactionary - i'm all for overturning the canon list of classic rock guitarists but it seems like it would have been more effective trolling with some of those dudes scattered around, like jimi hendrix at no. 2 and THEN lee ranaldo and thurston moore at no. 1. but far be it to tell whiney how to troll people. hendrix is not on this list at all btw, unless i missed him.
