i'm putting on an r&b night tonight and i'm gonna play this and not tell anyone what it is

lex pretend, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 09:59 (fourteen years ago)

parts of this new bieber sound are remarkably similar to jesse mccartney

pearsonic, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 12:20 (fourteen years ago)

he's put out some good stuff before but i thought it would be at least another album cycle before he made his 'justified' move

My thoughts exactly. Otoh I can see that they had to do *something*, "My World"'s production/angle/songwriting was tethered to his pre-pubescent voice. I just wish I could say I liked this more than, uh, anything off "Justified".

mom in the woods (Ówen P.), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 13:15 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, if we're extending the Justified comparison, I just wish it was closer to "Like I Love You" than to a back-half track like "Right for Me."

Cuba Pudding, Jr. (jaymc), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 13:49 (fourteen years ago)

is 'the justified move' the most overrated thing ever? it's possible.

this is fine but i'm not that enthusiastic about it.

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:17 (fourteen years ago)

are those bird calls? whoooooo....

Estimate the percent chance that a whale has ever been to the moon? (frogbs), Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

kind of feels like Bieber's entire career since the moment he got signed is about riding out The Other Justin's arc and making the Justified move feel like a grim inevitability

some dude, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 15:26 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, if we're extending the Justified comparison, I just wish it was closer to "Like I Love You" than to a back-half track like "Right for Me."
Why's everyone always dissin Right For Me?

billstevejim, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

Has anyone since Timberlake been in a position to utilize "the Justified move"? As if this is something that's happened more than once?

billstevejim, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

it kinda depends on whether you think the key context of that album is the move from pop to R&B, from group member to solo star, from teenpop star to universal/'adult' pop icon, or whether it applies equally to female acts etc. lots of artists before or since have had rough parallels in some of those categories, Bieber's just probably the most at once (although he was never in a group).

lex pretend, Thursday, 29 March 2012 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

There's part of the talky vocals that reminds me of David Banner's Play. That's the only thing I dislike about it.

Josh L, Saturday, 31 March 2012 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

"Boyfriend" blows, y'all are high

some dude, Tuesday, 3 April 2012 12:41 (fourteen years ago)

I agree, this is mediocre.

Respectfully, Tyrese Gibson (Nicole), Tuesday, 3 April 2012 15:12 (fourteen years ago)

"Boyfriend" bows at #2 this week, making it his highest-charting single.

I like-not-love it. Although he stands accused or is praised for Justinism, Timberlake in 2002 positioned himself as a sex dawg and hired Clipse; Bieber gets down on one knee to assure her of his gentlemanly credentials. The guy's still courting the G to PG crowd.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 23:04 (fourteen years ago)

I like-not-love it.

same here. it's more Celebrity Justin than Justified Justin. baby steps.

TALiB KWELi SODMG (The Reverend), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 23:13 (fourteen years ago)

he's not even on third album Jesse McCartney level tbh

ferrante's inferranteno (some dude), Thursday, 5 April 2012 00:36 (fourteen years ago)

i don't know that i've ever knowingly heard a jesse mccartney song

TALiB KWELi SODMG (The Reverend), Thursday, 5 April 2012 00:40 (fourteen years ago)

Is he James' brother?

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 5 April 2012 00:40 (fourteen years ago)

those jesse mccartney singles are pretty good

J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 April 2012 01:02 (fourteen years ago)

ppl comparing this to "the whisper song" and "play" are high -- there's a lot more to those songs than soft rapping

J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 April 2012 01:03 (fourteen years ago)

eh it's not a striking similarity but i hear it

ferrante's inferranteno (some dude), Thursday, 5 April 2012 01:06 (fourteen years ago)

don't not like this but i'm consciously siding against it. superficial allures but its emptiness transfers over and you feel kinda used afterwards

still a great single tho, i'd have greenlighted it too

r|t|c, Thursday, 5 April 2012 02:03 (fourteen years ago)

yeah it's definitely shrewd

ferrante's inferranteno (some dude), Thursday, 5 April 2012 02:08 (fourteen years ago)

So, I watched "Never say never" last night, it's amazing. There was a shot of Scooter Braun watching from side stage, he had tears in his eyes, and I totally get it.

Ò (Ówen P.), Friday, 13 April 2012 13:17 (fourteen years ago)

if i was making bank off justin bieber i'd be crying every time i saw him perform, too

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 April 2012 14:15 (fourteen years ago)

Na na na, that's what I THOUGHT, I was super cynical about the whole thing. "Usher reboots his career", Scooter makes some cheddar, a billion teenagers get obsessive. There's more to it than that, maybe? At least, there was for me. It's like seeing a highlight reel of one's own adolescence. All the good bits but with better hair and clothes.

I read something C Wilson just wrote with regards to Hirsch's "Bully":

Sitting through the vérité evidence, moment by moment, did provide a sort of therapy – not so much in the sympathy I felt for what the characters were enduring as in the way it had me constantly anticipating how the moments we were seeing would affect the lives ahead of them. Of course the lens through which I was doing that forecasting was my own experience, and so the lens became a mirror, in which I could see the threads tracing back from today to those moments of my own, way back.

And he hit the nail on the head, with regards to "why do I care about Tyler Clementi". The same observation rang true when I was watching Beibs at the bowling alley.

Ò (Ówen P.), Friday, 13 April 2012 14:33 (fourteen years ago)

(In the movie, I didn't actually see Biebs at a bowling alley.)

Ò (Ówen P.), Friday, 13 April 2012 14:37 (fourteen years ago)

Zac Efron got hawt after his adolescent polyurethane phase. There's hope for the Bieb.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 13 April 2012 14:38 (fourteen years ago)

Owen just imagine how much better it would have been if you saw it in 3D

♆ (gr8080), Friday, 13 April 2012 16:34 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not opposed to watching it, but I'm feeling too self conscious to check it out from the library. Maybe if I check out two old Criterion titles or something at the same time...

Mmm, nope. Efron's hotness reached its apex with the Rolling Stone cover. He is now merely tapthatguy fodder.

This article almost makes me feel sorry for him.

Look at how funky he is! (jer.fairall), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

We head into his studio, where Aldred greets Bieber and pumps him up for the evening by ripping the sleeves off of his T-shirt while he's still wearing it. OUTTA MY WAY, SLEEVES. This is clearly not the first time they've performed this ritual. It's Bieber's patented entrance move, his talcum powder tossed in the air. Being Justin Bieber means having an endless number of T-shirts to destroy.

article wasn't very good

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 17:18 (fourteen years ago)

Would've been way better if he'd actually gotten to smoke pot with Bieber and take him to a titty bar.

Look at how funky he is! (jer.fairall), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 17:35 (fourteen years ago)

new song is good!

sean gramophone, Tuesday, 29 May 2012 19:17 (fourteen years ago)

this is cool, kind of annoying tho

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 29 May 2012 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

There's a glimpse of a thoughtful person in there, someone who knows he's a caged animal. We talk music, and he mentions his love for pre–"Black Album" Metallica—"One," "Fade to Black." "Those are my jams," he says.
