no irony...and it's got nothing to do with Jagger changing one key verse (guess which...?)

If you hear Salt of the Earth as insincere then to me it just means your jadedness is maybe getting out of hand, idk

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 26 March 2012 01:50 (fourteen years ago)

in fact it sounds so strange

Euler, Monday, 26 March 2012 01:51 (fourteen years ago)

but that jaded faded junkie nurse, oh what pleasant company!

Iago Galdston, Monday, 26 March 2012 01:51 (fourteen years ago)

"salt of the earth" both is and is not insincere, and that's where it gets its power imo. it takes a lot of positions all at once, both occupying and eviscerating the "let them eat cake" position while also expressing both compassion and contempt for the masses. if it helps, bear in mind that e.g. many tea partiers are salt-of-the-earth types.

I think that's right, & that you can hear the Jagger / Keef songwriting dynamic at work in that (though I should read up to see if that's right)

Euler, Monday, 26 March 2012 01:57 (fourteen years ago)

OK, I can hear that, the both positions at once, but I still hate it!

Iago Galdston, Monday, 26 March 2012 02:03 (fourteen years ago)

Yes. I'd argue that this has been Jagger's power from the beginning.

before Bowie and Ferry he was the first to conflate notions of "irony" and "sincerity"

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 March 2012 02:05 (fourteen years ago)

I'll take that, roger

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 26 March 2012 02:05 (fourteen years ago)

maybe, but it is great and it is on my first draft of 20.

I meant that as a compliment! It's one of the great FU songs, and is in my top 20 too

Iago Galdston, Monday, 26 March 2012 02:11 (fourteen years ago)

still working through my own ballot, somewhat surprised. going in i would have expected to rate "rocks off" over "tumbling dice" but it's not workin' out that way. and was certain that "let it loose," which I love dearly, would rate over "shine a light." still will i think but dear lord the leadwork in "shine a light" is really something else.

"we love you" is almost certainly getting one of my satanic majesties-era slots. 9 year old me would go for "dandelion" or "she's a rainbow" or "2000 man" for the opening lick alone but damn. for your consideration:

2000 Man is fab, 2nd best on the album after the mighty Citadel

Euler, Monday, 26 March 2012 02:40 (fourteen years ago)

both likely gonna be on mine

Vegas has installed Gimme Shelter as the favorite, at 5 to 1.

yeah, this read makes the most sense to me, because it doesn't come across anywhere near so black-hearted as it would if you figured the whole thing was a pisstake, but that "when i look into the faceless crowd" refrain does put a big kink in the apparent sincerity of the rest. like the compassion (or attempted compassion) is in earnest, but mick can't help admitting that he's looking down from above. i like the honesty of this.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Monday, 26 March 2012 03:04 (fourteen years ago)

dagmn, "we love you" is so fucking great! killed me to cut it, but i did. agree that it's one of their very best SM-era tracks. like "child of the moon", it's probably gonna get screwed due to not appearing on any of the studio albums or hot rocks.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Monday, 26 March 2012 03:12 (fourteen years ago)

cut down to 25. have somehow managed to let "saint of me" hang around despite having already jettisoned "paint it, black." am i a disgusting savage y/n?

ps worth noting that keef does not appear on "saint of me" but me'shell ndegéocello does.

would probably vote for "love is strong" as well tbh if it weren't always bookended for me with "wicked as it seems"

I can't, and couldn't, get down with Saint of Me

I dunno why, it just doesn't do it for me

me neither

It made my ballot easily. Love the piano riff, and especially love Jagger's angry vocal (and Charlie's angry drums) on the middle eight.

Everyone needs to vote for You Got The Silver!!!!!!

...so that I don't flagellate myself for having to cut it.

yeah, no, sorry roger - it's not even on my short list [ducks out]

I don't see how it's possible to have anything on this poll from after 1972.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 26 March 2012 16:09 (fourteen years ago)

I will have at least one track from 1973. Alfred will have no tracks before 1973.

ha!

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:18 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't think about timeline when I was working on my ballot (promise!), just looked at it afterwards and realized that the cutoff year was surprisingly early. Felt a little guilty, not guilty enough to make changes (yet).

any major prude will tell you (WmC), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

My latest is 1978

I just couldn't can't do anything later, and I did try to devote a little bit of listening time to the later catalog stuff.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:26 (fourteen years ago)

I was pretty conscious of the timeline, but still had a hard time coming up with something after 1973. "Shattered" and "One Hit" were late cuts, though.

we can be gyros just for one day (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:27 (fourteen years ago)

i'm trying to fit in some guilty pleasure later singles. i think having only 20 spots on ballots makes the poll results consolidate more firmly on the peak period of long-running artists, though, for better or worse (for worse imo).

internet somebody (some dude), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:28 (fourteen years ago)

The whole "Some Girls" album is a huge weakness of mine, I had 2 picks off that album, very nearly 3.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:29 (fourteen years ago)

I love "Waiting on a Friend" as much as any sixties ballad.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:31 (fourteen years ago)

Although I experienced the Stones later than what Rob Sheffied has called the Mall Rat Years (1978-1983), that's how I most fondly remember them.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:33 (fourteen years ago)

I included "One Hit," but nothing later than that.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 26 March 2012 16:35 (fourteen years ago)

Waiting on a Friend is pretty great.

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:37 (fourteen years ago)

my real intro to the stones was my parents' copy of hot rocks, which i became seriously obsessed with around age 12, followed by my mom's purchase of tattoo you when i was 14. i did then and still love do that album. also have a lot of affection for the funky slinky side of the late 70s/early 80s stones: "miss you", "shattered", "emotional rescue", "slave". all of those songs probably should have made my ballot, but most didn't.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:43 (fourteen years ago)

Some Girls isn't as good as I'd hoped. It's like they tried to remake Exile, only this time commercial, and missed what was good in the first place.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 26 March 2012 16:44 (fourteen years ago)

god i will be so pissed if "Miss You" gets a raw deal in the final results because of the nothing-after-Exile crowd

internet somebody (some dude), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

tattoo you tracks that made my first cut:

Hang Fire
Little T & A
Neighbors
No Use In Crying
Slave
Start Me Up
Waiting On A Friend
Worried About You

"no use in crying" and "little t&a" were the hardest for me to deny

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Monday, 26 March 2012 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

no "Heaven"!
