This is a bit of a longshot, but I have an ID request for a melodic house track (as played by Dinky last night, who was totally on fire, I might add) characterized by pattern of strings (which were something like half a bar in length each) with a female vocal snippet every 4 bars saying something that sounds like "don't let me doooooown" but isn't really decipherable. Thanks.

Do you know Newworldquarium? Not especially raw, but definitely abstract and analog...

clarke: ah yes, I like NWA. definitely belongs to that kind of sound.

anyone can tell me some essential books about dance music?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 13 September 2012 11:49 (thirteen years ago)

A few good ones that I've read:

Dan Sicko - Techno Rebels: The Renegades of Electronic Funk
* This is basically the history of techno in the US. Very informative on early developments of Detroit techno.

Matthew Colin - Altered State: The Story of Ecstasy Culture and Acid House
* Good, non-partisan look into rave culture and ecstacy use.

Jane Bussmann - Once in a Lifetime: The Crazy Days of Acid House and Afterwards
* You could read this as a partisan companion to Altered State. A sort of a "I was there" oral history and photo book of the British acid house scene in the late 80s and 90s. There isn't that much about the music, but it has wide variety of interesting and funny anecdotes told by various scenesters.

Chris Kempster (ed.) - History of House
* Extensive and informative interviews with pretty much all the biggest techno and house musicians and DJs around the time the book was published (1996). I think this is pretty hard to find nowadays, but maybe your library carries it?

Martin James - The State of Bass: Jungle: The Story So Far
* History of jungle and drum'n'bass up until 1997.

Ulf Poschardt - DJ-Culture
* This one is German and it's far more academic than any of the others I've mentioned, but if you're into that sort of thing, it has some cool theories and observations that none of the Anglo books I've read have made.

Tuomas, Thursday, 13 September 2012 12:23 (thirteen years ago)

what about last night a dj saved my life? worht reading?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Thursday, 13 September 2012 12:56 (thirteen years ago)

I remember liking it but it was years ago.

On the more disco side, Turn The Beat Around is good, also Love Saves The Day...I don't really remember either as it's been years, but I don't remember hating either! And Mel Cheren's autobiography "My Life and the Paradise Garage" is a pretty essential disco story.

dan selzer, Thursday, 13 September 2012 14:02 (thirteen years ago)

i don't think anybody's ever written a book on techno i've really enjoyed but i've only read techno rebels, altered states, energy flash and dj-culture

possibly i should just write my own at some point

wanted to find the superior "zagzig jazz" mix of this but this is the best i could do. still, awesome tune

I tried asking on the 90s poll noms thread, and now it's too late for that, but can anyone i.d. the first few tracks on this mix for me?

http://www.modernmusicsf.com/audio/mixes/ScottHenry_FeverVol6_SideB.mp3

I found this incomplete tracklisting using the archive.org's wayback machine, but there really aren't many people talking about scott henry tapes on the internet these days.

That Vandal 'Unraveled' track is incredible.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 16 September 2012 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

Loving the deep trancey vibes of the Tata Box Inhibitors record posted a couple of months back.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 16 September 2012 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

this is familiar to all but i'm blasting it right now and damn if it doesn't sound better than any "berghain techno" of the last 10 years

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUF5wECcdbg

the late great, Sunday, 16 September 2012 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

i wouldn't compare the two really, don't see a major connection.

i love that dreamer g record, chewshabadoo, meant to post it here last week actually, heard jus ed play it a few years back. it is hilarious and great.

Know how Roo feel (LocalGarda), Sunday, 16 September 2012 20:47 (thirteen years ago)

I've never managed to get into Berghain techno, but can you really compare the Craig with that sound?
(x-post)

On a different tangent, I was very happy to find out someone had edited the AVH mix of Kim English 'Nite Life' and removed the ravey stabs which always seemed to detract from the sensual, rolling nature of the rest of the track:

http://soundcloud.com/homeroespinosa/kim-english-nitelife-avh-vs

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 16 September 2012 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

xp i didn't really mean to compare the two except to say that carl craig sounds as good now as he did back then

the late great, Sunday, 16 September 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

"berghain techno" being shorthand for the kind of techno i really, really like right now

that said, if you take the melodic synths out and just leave drums and bass you could have a norman nodge track

the late great, Sunday, 16 September 2012 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

its not so different in construction from what is probably my favorite techno track of the last five years, "native rhythm electric"

the late great, Sunday, 16 September 2012 20:54 (thirteen years ago)

Cheers Ronan! My housemate DJ'd it out at a party the other week and it blew my mind. The vocal and those off-beat kicks bring a huge grin to my face.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 16 September 2012 20:57 (thirteen years ago)

If that Nodge track reminds me of anything, it's like an austere version of Crispy Bacon.

Chewshabadoo, Sunday, 16 September 2012 21:35 (thirteen years ago)

that too!

the late great, Sunday, 16 September 2012 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

excellent call on crispy bacon chewshabadoo!!

i never thought i cared much for stefan robbers but this track is killing me these days

<3 <3 <3 the artwork too

the late great, Tuesday, 18 September 2012 07:13 (thirteen years ago)

that said, if you take the melodic synths out and just leave drums and bass you could have a norman nodge track

It's been ages since I listened to the 4 My Peepz EP, but isn't there another track on it that does exactly this? (I.e. takes away the synths and leaves just the drums and bass?) Though IIRC it wasn't particularly memorable.

By biggest problem with Paperclip People isn't the use of high-pitched synth sounds per se, but that they sometimes sound oddly weak. Like the synth riff that begins "The Climax"... How could CC come up with something so feeble, when the drums and bass on that material is so kicking?
