MC Action Bronson, who through little fault of his own, sounds more or less exactly like Ghostface Killah.

oh come on

the sir edmund hillary of sitting through pauly shore films (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 23 March 2012 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

you think he's putting it on?

Number None, Friday, 23 March 2012 17:48 (fourteen years ago)

ghostfaceface

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 23 March 2012 17:49 (fourteen years ago)

stylistic choices are choices, they don't happen by accident

the sir edmund hillary of sitting through pauly shore films (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 23 March 2012 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

that is his actual voice though

Number None, Friday, 23 March 2012 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

yeah and there are a lot of things he could do with that voice that would not sound like Ghostface. He could rap like Too $hort, for example.

the sir edmund hillary of sitting through pauly shore films (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 23 March 2012 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

heard a couple tracks last year that i didn't much like, and just listened to "blue chips" with similar results. so what do i need to hear to understand? i mean, he's obviously talented, a great writer, but from what i've heard, i just don't like his energy & voice. doesn't appeal to me as pop music. and i like ghostface.

Fozzy Osbourne (contenderizer), Friday, 23 March 2012 17:57 (fourteen years ago)

doesn't appeal to me as pop music.

maybe there's your answer?

dayo, Friday, 23 March 2012 17:58 (fourteen years ago)

man i almost made a thread about this guy last year but then realized random nyc punchline rap dudes haven't been popular on ilx in years. what happened?

havent heard the new record yet but i guess i ought to now

ciderpress, Friday, 23 March 2012 19:16 (fourteen years ago)

sounding like ghostface thats that shit i dont like

D-40, Friday, 23 March 2012 19:36 (fourteen years ago)

ok just DL'd this, totally digging it...

haha cider i was thinking of starting my own NYC rap bullshit thread but figured that was goon balkanization at its worst

konybrony (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 March 2012 19:47 (fourteen years ago)

actually this is totally ghostface = the clash, action bronson=rancid

konybrony (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 March 2012 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

haha I am borrowing that

the sir edmund hillary of sitting through pauly shore films (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 23 March 2012 19:55 (fourteen years ago)

and i say that as a person that, to be honest, on most days would rather listen to out come the wolves than london calling even if i recognize the clash as "better"

konybrony (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 March 2012 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

does he still rap about food and make youtube cooking vids

ciderpress, Friday, 23 March 2012 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

still def raps about food, not sure abt youtube videos

konybrony (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 23 March 2012 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

it's really more like if you took dom passantino's brain and put it in whiney's body

well whiney has eaten at per se, so you can take some of his brain, too

haha every since i saw the 'bruch' vid i can help but thinking of this dude as whiney: the rapper

Lamp, Friday, 23 March 2012 21:27 (fourteen years ago)

rock the swagon and g.o.a.t. it (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 19:41 (fourteen years ago)

huh weird a homophobic rapper

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

whoaaaaaa what the fuck that's so messed up. i've been practically idolizing this guy so that is really disappointing. guess i shouldn't be that surprised, but still. hard to believe das racist would be down with a dude who does shit like this is they walk their tolerance-talk.

caulk the wagon and float it, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

on the bright side, i lol to see that my username has inspired whiney's current handle

caulk the wagon and float it, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

jesus fucking christ, happy to say i've never liked anything this dude has done (then again, i've only heard a few tracks, so what i know)

spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:07 (fourteen years ago)

one less reason to pay attention to this guy

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

that's really disheartening, fuck him.

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

huh weird a homophobic rapper

it's 2012

i don't think anyone is flabbergasted over here but *shrug* isn't an adequate response any more, really

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

this dude's definitely a creep but it's kind of weird that people are pissed about this but not "politically conscious rapper" killer mike saying "no homo" or the critically acclaimed schoolboy q using the word "faggots" across his album - obviously not as bad as what action bronson did but having an arbitrary point where homophobia suddenly becomes a problem is part of why AB probably thought it was ok to do this in the first place.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

the implied shrug was sarcastic, i'm pretty conflicted/pissed off about this in general

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

otm

there's a pretty big difference between borderline assault and saying words on a record IMO

not that there's an excuse for either

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:42 (fourteen years ago)

this really sucks, i like action.
also i had somehow tried to work around all his hateful misogynist shit in my head because he seemed good natured somehow, and obviously that was bullshit.

ultimately, i like him but he's just not worthy of support at this point.

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

i said there's a difference but on the other hand my point is that making a big deal about the difference is part of the problem - shouldn't we be boycotting any rapper who says faggot or no homo instead of saying it's not a problem until that attitude turns into a physical action? obviously i'm not saying anything new here, it's been an issue forever, and i'm not pointing fingers, i listen to music that has ugly attitudes/words that i don't agree with too, it's just very disheartening to me how much this gets glossed over.

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:46 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i dunno the older i get the less i listen to rap and that's definitely one of the reasons :/

wack nerd zinging in the dead of night (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:48 (fourteen years ago)

i have to admit that i do extend a bit more tolerance to the use of ugly words than i do to ugly actions. they're both worth calling out, but the difference between bronson's actions/attitudes and (for instance) the casual use of "no homo" seems pretty significant to me. if you really want to police a strict, zero-tolerance line wr2 stuff like this, "bitch" is as objectionable as "faggot", imo, and i'm just not prepared to expend outrage at every stray use of that word.

spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno i'm not sure what "we" should "do" and i don't really want to call for boycotting records or whatever and yeah schoolboy q's "faggots" are def problematic though "no homo" has always been whatever to me but i kind of feel that the fact that it is 2012 now is important and we, and hip-hop, should be progressing on this front and not ignoring it like we all, including me, have always done

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

in this particular instance actual violence is a huge crossing-of-the-line that goes above & beyond really

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

but the difference between bronson's actions/attitudes and (for instance) the casual use of "no homo" seems pretty significant to me.

my response to this would be, how do you decide where you draw the line? where on the continuum does it stop being ok?

i totally understand and agree that i'm a hypocrite for getting more pissed off about homophobic speech than sexist speech, i think in general it's probably due to the mainstreaming of "bitch" but that's not a good excuse

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:59 (fourteen years ago)

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 20:59 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i was mildly disappointed that there wasn't a whole litany of insensitive AB comments weighing in on peta's sexiest vegan and other issues

some dude, Wednesday, 23 May 2012 21:02 (fourteen years ago)

I say no homo irl

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

my response to this would be, how do you decide where you draw the line? where on the continuum does it stop being ok?

i don't think there is a clear line, and it's often hard to say exactly where a "sort-of-okay (but not really)" type thing slips over into "completely unacceptable" territory. i'm okay with that imprecision, though.

spextor vs bextor (contenderizer), Wednesday, 23 May 2012 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

yeah at some point I'm like who am I offending with this material besides myself - I don't listen to things to annoy my parents/teachers/jerks at school anymore

many xxp
