It's one of those tracks that's totally easy to miss in that way because it sort of feels like it's been around for ever and is not in fact the product of a particular individual, just a structurally necessary moment in the mix.

the shape of things seems to be "older" well-loved male DJs seen off in favour of B.Traits and a 21-year-old named Yasmin from Manchester who may be great for all i know but appears to have 0 following

1xtra as breeding ground for r1 was a great move but this is just throwing the baby out with the bathwater

fucking "simulcasts", pure hack n slash costcutting masked as brand integration & streamlined unity of purpose

yeah i can't think 1Xtra feels too great now about being 1's "sister station"

thing is 1xtra ought to be the sister station though, hauling it out of its ghetto and positioning the station like that was its great success of recent years - and besides, the landscape has changed and blurred enough so the two's remit has grown closer anyway. (you could even argue 1xtra has had a direct role in shaping that). but a sister should have a vibrant life of her own and not be hostage to the brother the way it looks like it'll be now.

getting back to the subject of q, i just can't stress enough how much of a travesty it is him leaving and cameo getting to stay on as garage tsar. why is this the one time the old dj gets to stay on? there's nothing q can't do that cameo can - q is an exceptional grime dj on the sly and has all the contacts just the same (especially as grime booms outside of london), he is the hot thing in the clubs, he produces excellently and has the media coverage, and his sets include, encompass and reinvent every facet of ukg new and old. i could go on. it's just terrible.

did any of you ever actually listen to his show btw cos i never really got that impression

i did, but not as much as i would have liked! it's frustrating because i don't listen to the radio at that time of night so "play again" was really the only way, but sitting at my desk is not the usual place i listen to music.. a self-expiring 7-day podcast would be ideal for shows like this but afaik that technology doesn't exist for that exactly
