DJ Q as a "thing" post the golden age of bassline is something that has seeped into popular consciousness only over the past 18 months I'd say.
In particular the melting pot of bassline, 2-step and grime (with smatterings of dubstep, old school house, funky etc) that his dj sets from the last few years basically define.
― Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:06 (fourteen years ago)
Also I wasn't accusing you personally of being a new jack, Rev, DJ Q's rep has exploded in general over about the last 6 months in particular.
― Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:08 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, but I understand, before recently I just kind of treated him as a "like him when I hear him" type thing.
― The Reverend, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:12 (fourteen years ago)
his 97 remix of dizzee's "flex" is still all time, of course. And "you wot".
― Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:14 (fourteen years ago)
obv
― The Reverend, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:21 (fourteen years ago)
One thing I love about this scene (and it was true in the early days of funky as well) is how totally random (but awesome) outsider tunes become massive anthems. Maya Jane Coles' "what they say" being a good example.
― Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:24 (fourteen years ago)
i gotta youtube that, but yes, i loved that about funky. "we belong to the night", "self religion", "turn me on", etc
― The Reverend, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:29 (fourteen years ago)
"what they say" is basically an organ anthem.
― Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:31 (fourteen years ago)
same guy? used to love this bitd
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WD1WJP9PoI0
― piscesx, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:34 (fourteen years ago)
i didn't realize the organ stuff was apart from this scene. i thought it was just kind of in another part of the spectrum. xp
― The Reverend, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:35 (fourteen years ago)
Oh no "what they say" isn't an Organ anthem, haha. Maya makes euro deep house and occasionally dubstep. But it feels like an organ anthem in this context. It's an inadvertent resonance perhaps.
Organ, as such, seems both part of this scene and also apart from it, slightly, in the sense that there are Organ DJs who would never touch the harder stuff that DJ Q plays. Though really the same is true of all the scene's constituent parts so that probably doesn't mean much.
― Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:41 (fourteen years ago)
oh, you meant small "o" organ, i gotchu
― The Reverend, Monday, 19 March 2012 21:52 (fourteen years ago)
pisces: different guy
― The Reverend, Monday, 19 March 2012 22:01 (fourteen years ago)
His "Enters the Unknown" mix CD is amazing.
I've also found myself gravitating towards that lovely nexus of bassline, grime, funky, and all the techno-y and housey bits of dubstep as of late. It almost feels like lots of things are moving in this direction. Maybe its just me.
― matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Monday, 19 March 2012 22:59 (fourteen years ago)
all the techno-y and housey bits of dubstep as of late
it's quite interesting seeing what's "in" and what's outside the nexus of the above stuff - it's not just a quality issue either, some housey post-dubstep I adore would sound very out of place in a DJ Q mix whereas other stuff I like but less enthusiastically feels like a perfect fit (and tends to sound much better in that context than in isolation).
I should just break down and order this from boomkat, shouldn't I.
― Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 23:13 (fourteen years ago)
Its worth the money. I got mine from the label and it took about three weeks.
― matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Monday, 19 March 2012 23:19 (fourteen years ago)
I'm sure it's worth the money! It's more that ordering CDs seems so.. anachronistic. But I will do it.
― Tim F, Monday, 19 March 2012 23:20 (fourteen years ago)
really? i totally haven't noticed this. you're probably right but who are you actually referring to? other DJs or critics? if the latter i've been trying to pay less attention generally
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 00:18 (fourteen years ago)
maya jane coles has completely passed me by in that i know she's been getting big but i've somehow managed never to hear anything she's done, whether dj sets or productions (until her new dj kicks mix)

Getting more play in a variety of DJ sets in a variety of (obv really close together) genres, getting lots of critical attention (including stuff like doing DJ mixes for magazines), tunes seeming to get a (relatively) high sales results on juno etc, releases on more critically respectable labels...
― Tim F, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 00:34 (fourteen years ago)
Maya Jane Coles is really good mostly!
Lex I think you would like her release as Nocturnal Sunshine, "Can't Hide The Way I Feel". It's a lot like Damu.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 00:35 (fourteen years ago)
i seem to have so little time to keep up nowadays nnnghhh
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 00:39 (fourteen years ago)
this maya jane coles track is fabulous
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 March 2012 00:55 (fourteen years ago)
how the fuck did i miss "what they say"? so incredible
i say i missed it, i totally recognise it, but i didn't realise what it was til now
― lex pretend, Thursday, 22 March 2012 08:21 (fourteen years ago)
lol "what they say" is TWO years old o_0
― lex pretend, Thursday, 22 March 2012 08:34 (fourteen years ago)
It's one of those tracks that's totally easy to miss in that way because it sort of feels like it's been around for ever and is not in fact the product of a particular individual, just a structurally necessary moment in the mix.
― Tim F, Thursday, 22 March 2012 11:11 (fourteen years ago)
Not a DJ Q ish tune but I love this Maya track "Senseless":

― The Reverend, Saturday, 24 March 2012 18:47 (fourteen years ago)
Nah, just vaugly simular like a lot of bassline. Rocky has more Rocky & Baby giggles innit.

― The Reverend, Saturday, 24 March 2012 21:00 (fourteen years ago)
They seemed to swap tracks sometime. Thought we were gettin 'Will I Evere Be Free' too but then got the promo with 'Rocky' in it instead.
