I was at a wedding several years back where "Nothing Really Matters" was used for the first dance. That seems important to mention for some reason.

Et tu, Crut? (The Reverend), Sunday, 11 January 2009 11:59 (seventeen years ago)

'forgive them father' is really underrated though possibly i'm just a sucker for female rappers slipping into jamaican patois, and fierce denunciations of haterz

two months pass...

i think ex-factor should've won actually

Hoos Passansteeno (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

lol @ the singles stomping everything out. classic album my ass!

I, Contrarian-Ass Mutha (some dude), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:09 (seventeen years ago)

but yeah was hoping "ex factor" would take it

I, Contrarian-Ass Mutha (some dude), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

uh, maybe it's just that the singles are so so great

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:13 (seventeen years ago)

it's got classic singles, sure.

I, Contrarian-Ass Mutha (some dude), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:20 (seventeen years ago)

i'm amazed that "The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill" didn't get a single vote. how i love that song!

jed_, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 19:21 (seventeen years ago)

yeah me too, although probably third.

five months pass...

i philosophy, possibly speak tongues
beat drums, abyssinian street baptist, rap this
in fine linen, from the beginning
my practice extending across the atlas, i begat this

flippin' in the ghetto on a dirty mattress
you can't match this rapper-slash-actress
more powerful than two cleopatras
bomb graffiti on the tomb of nefertiti
MCs ain't ready to take it to the serengeti
my rhymes is heavy, like the mind of sister betty
l-boogie spars with stars and constellations
then came down for the conversation
adjacent to the king, fear no human being
roll with cherubims to nassau coliseum
now hear the mixture where hip-hop meets scripture
develop a negative into a positive picture

Member, FreLng-Huysen used to have the bomb leather?
Back when Doug Fresh and Slick Rick was together.
Looking at the crew, we thought we'd all live forever

haha, i am actually hearing this for the first time right now

plax (ico), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

is there a way to here this w/o those schoolkids?

plax (ico), Thursday, 3 June 2010 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

i wish!!

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 18:30 (sixteen years ago)

i mean srsly wtf tho.

When I was like ten I thought that Lauryn Hill had like the most comprehensively beautiful voice and that everyone else should just quit now; consolidated.

plax (ico), Thursday, 3 June 2010 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

I edited out all the schoolkid bits in iTunes and have a version without them as a result, but short of that, not really.

Alex in Montreal, Thursday, 3 June 2010 19:17 (sixteen years ago)

"Ex-Factor" still is, in point of fact, one of the greatest songs ever.

silence is a rhythm too (Turangalila), Thursday, 3 June 2010 20:13 (sixteen years ago)

this entire album is amazing. only ones that i don't listen to consistently are When It Hurts So Bad and Final Hour

Alex in Montreal, Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:27 (sixteen years ago)

I kinda don't enjoy the middle of the album at all but the beginning and end are totally sublime

what it feels like for a goon (The Reverend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:38 (sixteen years ago)

i love "final hour" - love the mystic, visionary tinge to her righteousness on it

now imma get the mozzarella like a rockerfeller
still be in the church of lalibela singing hymns a cappella
whether posed in mirabella in couture
or
collecting residuals from off the score
i'm making sure i'm with the 144

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:43 (sixteen years ago)

went from hood shock to hood chic
but it ain't what you cop, it's about what you keep

plax (ico), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

Never quite got the love for "Ex Factor," possibly because of the strain she puts her voice through.

then u r dead to me

plax (ico), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:47 (sixteen years ago)

"Lost Ones" is one of the best opening tracks ever though.

Filmmaker, Author, Radio Host Stephen Baldwin (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

What does it for me personally is when she starts repeating "care for me, care for me" etc. - emotional lyrical repetition always gets to me.

silence is a rhythm too (Turangalila), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

tell me who I have to be

silence is a rhythm too (Turangalila), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:50 (sixteen years ago)

"Lost Ones" is one of the best opening tracks ever though.

and "it's funny how money change a situation" one of the best opening lines ever, especially delivered like that

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 3 June 2010 21:51 (sixteen years ago)

or lol indeed:

"Lost One." Even though I loved the Fugees album, I was unprepared by how fierce this song was. What a great first track.

i know right - the no-nonsense beat and then that cold, contemptuous "it's funny how money change a situation" BAM.

i love love love this album. if i had voted for this poll i don't even know what i would have voted for. and yes, lost ones is an amazing opening track. once i misheard the line as "you just lost won."

teledyldonix, Friday, 4 June 2010 05:42 (sixteen years ago)

Man, those first four tracks are strong.

I really think "Superstar" could have been an 'incredible' song instead of just a 'good' one if they had replaced the Doors-interpolation chorus with something a lot better. the verses are so much better.

mavisbeacon666 (San Te), Saturday, 8 January 2011 18:28 (fifteen years ago)

"Without you I go through withdrawal, 'cause nothing even matters... at all."

-- still one of my favorite love songs. Nihilism as bliss-out and vice versa.
